Balapur is a suburb in Hyderabad district of the Indian state of Telangana. It is located in Balapur mandal of Kandukur revenue division. [1] Balapur is one of the biggest refugee settlements in India, especially Rohingyas. [2]

Culture

The place is known for the auction of Laddu prasadam during Vinayaka Chavithi. [3] The annual procession of Vinayaka Chaviti, starts from Balapur in old city. [4]

The Rohingya people are a stateless Indo-Aryan ethnic group who predominantly follow Islam and reside in Rakhine State, Myanmar. Before the Rohingya genocide in 2017, when over 740,000 fled to Bangladesh, an estimated 1.4 million Rohingya lived in Myanmar. Described by journalists and news outlets as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, the Rohingya are denied citizenship under the 1982 Myanmar nationality law. There are also restrictions on their freedom of movement, access to state education and civil service jobs. The legal conditions faced by the Rohingya in Myanmar have been compared to apartheid by some academics, analysts and political figures, including Nobel laureate Bishop Desmond Tutu, a South African anti-apartheid activist. The most recent mass displacement of Rohingya in 2017 led the International Criminal Court to investigate crimes against humanity, and the International Court of Justice to investigate genocide.

Population as per 2011 Census is 64579 and presently it is estimated to be at 100000.

Khairatabad Ganesh is an idol of the Hindu god Ganesha that is installed during the annual festival of Ganesh Chaturthi at Khairatabad locality of Hyderabad, India. Constructed annually and known for its height and the laddu held in the figure's hand, the idol is worshipped during the 10-day festival where thousands of devotees visit every day. On the 11th day, the idol is immersed in the nearby Hussain Sagar lake.

Thakur Raja Singh, popularly known as Tiger Raja Singh, is an Indian politician from the state of Telangana. He is the incumbent MLA of the Telangana Legislative Assembly representing the Goshamahal Assembly constituency in Hyderabad. He started his political career in Telugu Desam Party until he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. He was part of the BJP until 23 August 2022, when he was suspended amid the 2022 Muhammad remarks controversy. On 22 October 2023, his suspension was revoked. Singh had served as the BJP party whip for the state of Telangana.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2015 Rohingya refugee crisis</span> Mass human migration crisis

In 2015, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people were forcibly displaced from their villages and IDP camps in Rakhine State, Myanmar, due to sectarian violence. Nearly one million fled to neighbouring Bangladesh and some travelled to Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand by rickety boats via the waters of the Strait of Malacca, Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

An illegal immigrant in India is a foreigner who has entered India either without valid documents or who initially had a valid document, but has overstayed beyond the permitted time, as per the general provisions of the Citizenship Act as amended in 2003. Such persons are not eligible for citizenship by registration or naturalisation. They are also liable to be imprisoned for 2–8 years and fined.

The 2020 Hyderabad floods were a series of floods associated with Deep Depression BOB 02 that caused extensive damage and loss of life as a result of flash flooding in Hyderabad, India in October 2020. Among the most affected areas were Balapur, L. B. Nagar, parts of Old City such as Hafiz Baba Nagar, Al Jubail Colony, Omer colony, Osman Nagar, Nabeel Colony, Falaknuma, Chaderghat etc. The fourth tropical cyclone and third deep depression of the 2020 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, BOB 02 formed on 11 October over the west-central Bay of Bengal and slowly drifted towards the east coast of India over the following three days.
