Colinton railway station was opened in 1874 and served the area of the then village of Colinton that now forms part of the city of Edinburgh, with Colinton House nearby. Although primarily built as a goods line to serve the many mills on the Water of Leith, a passenger service was provided by the Caledonian Railway using the Balerno Loop and after grouping by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, seeing formal closure to passenger traffic shortly after nationalisation.
Opened by the Caledonian Railway, it became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway during the Grouping of 1923, and the LMS ran the last train to serve the station in 1943 with the expectation that the line would re-open after the war. The 20.19 to Edinburgh had been the last train and carried 24 passengers. The line passed to the Scottish Region of British Railways upon nationalisation in 1948 who then officially closed Colinton in 1949. Tight curves on the line resulted in slow speeds and made the line vulnerable to competition from tram services. It had once been very popular with families wishing to go for a day out in the country. [4]
The station had a single platform and was located on the northern side of the single track line just to the west of Colinton Tunnel with a typical Caledonian Railway style small wooden station building with a canopy. The goods yard, also on the north side of the line, was served from the west side of the station and had an open ended goods shed and a bay siding. [5] The Water of Leith lies nearby and an overbridge crossed the railway and the river. A signalbox lay to the west near the junction of the West Mills (corn and paper) goods branch. [6] [7]
A set of steep steps, known locally as 'Jacob's Ladder' gave access to the area above the tunnel portal where the stationmaster's house was located, one occupant being John Kerr. An old passenger carriage body sat close to the station building for many years. [4]
The OS map of 1893 shows the goods shed with two other sidings, a weighing machine, a crane and several small buildings associated with the goods yards. [8] [9] The goods shed and a siding are still shown on the 1955 OS map, the passenger station having closed in 1943. [10]

The station is now part of the Water of Leith cyclepath that follows much of the route of the Balerno Loop and the goods yard is a car park.
Drem railway station serves the village of Drem in East Lothian, 5 miles (8 km) from the seaside town of North Berwick in Scotland. It is located on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) 18 miles (29 km) east of Edinburgh Waverley. Passenger services are provided on the ScotRail North Berwick Line, and the junction where the North Berwick branch diverges from the ECML is a short distance to the east of the station.
Princes Street Station was a mainline railway station which stood at the west end of Princes Street, in Edinburgh, Scotland, for almost 100 years. Temporary stations were opened in 1848 and 1870, with construction of the main station commencing in the 1890s. The station was closed completely in 1965 and largely demolished in 1969–70. Only its hotel remains, but it is no longer in railway ownership.
Kineton railway station was a railway station located to the west of Kineton, Warwickshire, England. It stood at the junction of Warwick Road (B4086) and Brookhampton Lane, on a site now occupied by the Plantagenet trading estate.
Abington railway station was a station which served Abington, in the Scottish county of South Lanarkshire. It was served by local trains on what is now known as the West Coast Main Line. There is now no station convenient for Abington.
Fyvie railway station was a railway station near Fyvie, Aberdeenshire. It served the rural area and Fyvie Castle, but lay about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the village. It was opened in 1857 by the Banff Macduff & Turriff Junction Railway, later part of the Great North of Scotland Railway, then the LNER and finally British Railways. The station was an intermediate stop on the branchline from Inveramsay to Macduff. The station closed to passengers in 1951 and to goods in 1966. Fyvie derives from the Scots Gaelic Fia chein meaning Deer hill.
Tweedmouth railway station was a railway station which served the Tweedmouth area of Berwick-on-Tweed in Northumberland, England. It was located on the East Coast Main Line. As well as a railway station for passengers, it was also the main service yard and goods yard between Newcastle upon Tyne and Edinburgh. Also Tweedmouth station was the terminus for the Tweed Valley Railway line, which connected the East Coast Main Line with the Waverley Line at Newtown St. Boswells. The station lies to the south of the Royal Border Bridge.

Stobo railway station was a railway station in the Borders east of Biggar, serving the hamlet of Stobo; a rural community within the Parish of Stobo.
Lochmaben railway station was a station which served Lochmaben, in the Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway. It was served by trains on a local line which ran between the Caledonian Main Line at Lockerbie and the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway at Dumfries.
The Balerno line was a short loop railway in Scotland. It was some 6 miles in length leaving the main Caledonian Edinburgh to Carstairs line at Slateford in Edinburgh. It was built by the Caledonian Railway (CR) mainly to service the many enterprises situated along the upper Water of Leith. However, passenger trains also ran. Most trains terminated at Balerno, though they had to travel to Ravelrig to turn round. Other stations were constructed at Colinton, Juniper Green and Currie. In 1923, with the grouping, the CR amalgamated with several other companies to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) which, following nationalisation in 1947, became part of British Railways.
Kirtlebridge railway station was a station which served the rural area around Kirtlebridge and Eaglesfield, north of Annan in Dumfriesshire, Scotland; the location is now within the area of Dumfries and Galloway unitary council.
Kirkpatrick railway station was a station which served the rural area around Kirkpatrick Fleming, north of Gretna in the Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway. It was served by local trains on what is now known as the West Coast Main Line. The nearest station for Kirkpatrick Fleming is now at Gretna Green.
The Caledonian Railway lines to Edinburgh started with the main line that reached Edinburgh in 1848 as part of its route connecting the city with Glasgow and Carlisle. The potential of the docks at Granton and Leith led to branch line extensions, and residential development encouraged branch lines in what became the suburbs of Edinburgh. In 1869 a line was opened from Carfin through Shotts giving the Caledonian a shorter route between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Hailes Halt railway station was opened in 1908 as Hailes Platform railway station and was unadvertised private use for golfers. It became a public station in 1927 serving the area of Hailes that now forms part of the city of Edinburgh with Hailes House nearby.

Ravelrig Junction Platform railway station or Ravelrig Halt was originally opened in 1884 as a two platform station on the Shotts line on the edge of the Dalmahoy Estate in an area that now forms part of the city of Edinburgh. It stood just to the west of Ravelrig Junction that served the Balerno Loop Line. After closure in 1920 Ravelrig Platform for Dalmahoy Golf Course was opened at the same site around 1927 as a single platform when the Dalmahoy Estate became a hotel with a golf course, however it is stated to have closed in 1930. The site may have also served a military purpose.
Leadhills railway station was opened on 1 October 1901 as the intermediate stop on the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Light Railway and served the lead mining area, farms and the village of Leadhills circa 5.5 miles (8.9 km) WSW of Elvanfoot railway station in South Lanarkshire until 2 January 1939 for passengers and freight. Until Wanlockhead station opened Leadhills was the highest standard gauge adhesion station in the United Kingdom.
Wanlockhead railway station was opened on 1 October 1902 as the terminus on the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Light Railway and served the lead mining area, farms and the village of Wanlockhead. Elvanfoot railway station in South Lanarkshire was the junction for the branch and was located on the west coast main line. It remained open until 2 January 1939 for passengers and freight. When Wanlockhead station opened in 1902, a year after Leadhills station, it became the highest standard gauge adhesion station in the United Kingdom at 1,413 ft (431 m), seven miles and 24 chains from Elvanfoot.
Stracathro railway station served the sparsely populated rural area around the villages of Stracathro and Inchbare as well as Dunlappie and other estates in Angus, Scotland from 1896 to 1964 on the Brechin and Edzell District Railway. The station was opened as Inchbare and then renamed Dunlappie before finally being named Stracathro.
