The 2010 Enfield Council election took place on 6 May 2010 to elect members of Enfield London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour party gained overall control of the council from the Conservative party. [1]

London Borough of Enfield London borough in United Kingdom

The London Borough of Enfield is a London borough in north London, England. It borders the London Boroughs of Barnet, Haringey and Waltham Forest, the districts of Hertsmere, Welwyn Hatfield and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, and Epping Forest in Essex. The local authority is Enfield Council.

Background

The last election in 2006 had the Conservatives hold a majority with 34 seats, compared to 27 for Labour and 2 from the Save Chase Farm group. [2] Between 2006 and 2010 Labour gained a seat from the Conservatives in February 2009 at a by-election in Jubilee ward, but a Labour councillor Denise Headley defected to the Conservatives in August 2009. Save Chase Farm local British political party

Save Chase Farm was a local British political party that stood against the closure of departments of Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield.

By-elections, also spelled bye-elections, are used to fill elected offices that have become vacant between general elections.

A Councillor is a member of a local government council.

11 councillors stood down at the election, 7 Conservatives and 4 Labour, including the leader of the Labour group Jeff Rodin. [5] Parties standing at the election, included the Green party who stood in every ward for the first time, the UK Independence Party who had 5 candidates and the British National Party who had 4. Green Party of England and Wales Political party in England and Wales

The Green Party of England and Wales is a green, left-wing political party in England and Wales. Headquartered in London, since September 2018, its co-leaders are Siân Berry and Jonathan Bartley. The Green Party has one representative in the House of Commons, one in the House of Lords, and three in the European Parliament. In addition, it has various councillors in UK local government and two members of the London Assembly.

UK Independence Party British political party

The UK Independence Party is a hard Eurosceptic, right-wing political party in the United Kingdom. It currently has one representative in the House of Lords and seven Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). It has three Assembly Members (AMs) in the National Assembly for Wales and one member in the London Assembly. The party reached its greatest level of success in the mid-2010s, when it gained two Members of Parliament and was the largest UK party in the European Parliament.

The British National Party (BNP) is a far-right, fascist political party in the United Kingdom. It is headquartered in Wigton, Cumbria, and its current leader is Adam Walker. A minor party, it has no elected representatives at any level of UK government. Founded in 1982, the party reached its greatest level of success in the 2000s, when it had over fifty seats in local government, one seat on the London Assembly, and two Members of the European Parliament.

Election result

Labour gained control with 36 seats after winning all 3 seats in 12 wards, while the Conservatives won 27 seats in 9 wards. [6] Labour dominated the east of the borough, while the Conservatives held the seats in the west. [7] Wards where Labour gained from the Conservatives included Enfield Lock, Palmers Green, Southbury and Turkey Street, but the Conservatives gained 2 seats from Save Chase Farm councillors. [7] [8]

Enfield Lock human settlement in United Kingdom

Enfield Lock is an area in the London Borough of Enfield, north London. It is approximately located east of the Hertford Road between Turkey Street and the Holmesdale Tunnel overpass, and extends to the River Lee Navigation, including the Enfield Island Village. The locality gains its name from the lock on the River Lee Navigation. Today's Enfield Lock was rebuilt in 1922. The area forms part of the Lee Valley Park and the Enfield Lock Conservation Area. On its eastern boundary Enfield Lock has marshland formerly used as a testing site between the Royal Small Arms Factory and the Gunpowder Mills. To the south is Brimsdown, the north Waltham Cross and to the west Bullsmoor and Freezywater. Enfield Lock forms part of the London boundary.

Palmers Green area in London, England

Palmers Green is a suburban area of the London Borough of Enfield in north London, England. It is located within the N13 postcode district, around 8 miles (13 km) north of Charing Cross. It is home to the largest population of Greek Cypriots outside Cyprus and is often nicknamed "Little Cyprus" or "Palmers Greek".

Following the election Doug Taylor became the new Labour leader of the council, after being elected unopposed as the leader of the Labour group. [9]

Before the election there was a Labour majority and afterwards Labour had increased their majority.
