Chancellors of Indiana University Bloomington

Not to be confuse with the University Chancellor, a title usually given to retired system presidents who were employed by the Indiana University system to assist in fund raising activities for the university system.

The title and office of campus chancellor was created three separate times and the position was reabsorbed by the president of the university (system) twice. [22]

Snyder, vice-president and dean for undergraduate development at University, yesterday was named to the new post of acting chancellor of the I.U. Bloomington campus. At the same time, a search and screening committee was approved by the Faculty Council to make recommendations to President Joseph L. Sutton for candidates for permanent chancellor. Sutton said that Snyder will serve as the chief academic officer of the Bloomington campus. Under long-range reorganization of the university, all units in Indianapolis are now under direction of a chancellor, and the deans of all the regional campuses (Fort Wayne, Gary, South Bend, Kokomo).

Snyder, 45, acting chancellor of Indiana University's Bloomington campus, is new president of Westmont College at Santa Barbara, Calif. Dr. Snyder will assume his duties July 1. Acting chancellor at Bloomington probably will be Byrum E. Carter, now dean of the college of arts and sciences.

The selection of Dean Carter ended a nationwide search of more than six months to fill the chancellor post. Snyder, who had been acting chancellor, resigned in June to become president of Westmont College in California.

He is not retiring from Indiana University. He will retire, June 30 as Bloomington, vice president after six years as chief administrative officer of the state's largest campus. It was not the best of times when Carter assumed the chancellorship July 28, 1969.

The IU trustees approved the changes recently to reflect that the men are the chief operating officers for their campuses. The vice president title reflects their standing in the IU system.
