John W. Snyder, vice-president and dean for undergraduate development at University, yesterday was named to the new post of acting chancellor of the I.U. Bloomington campus. At the same time, a search and screening committee was approved by the Faculty Council to make recommendations to President Joseph L. Sutton for candidates for permanent chancellor. Sutton said that Snyder will serve as the chief academic officer of the Bloomington campus. Under long-range reorganization of the university, all units in Indianapolis are now under direction of a chancellor, and the deans of all the regional campuses (Fort Wayne, Gary, South Bend, Kokomo).
John W. Snyder, 45, acting chancellor of Indiana University's Bloomington campus, is new president of Westmont College at Santa Barbara, Calif. Dr. Snyder will assume his duties July 1. Acting chancellor at Bloomington probably will be Byrum E. Carter, now dean of the college of arts and sciences.
Byrum E. Carter, dean of Indiana University's College of Arts and Sciences, today was officially appointed chancellor of the Bloomington campus... The selection of Dean Carter ended a nationwide search of more than six months to fill the chancellor post. Snyder, who had been acting chancellor, resigned in June to become president of Westmont College in California.
In just a few more days Byrum E. Carter will take up the three R's of a yearlong administrative leave reading, 'riting and rumination. He is not retiring from Indiana University. He will retire, June 30 as Bloomington, vice president after six years as chief administrative officer of the state's largest campus. It was not the best of times when Carter assumed the chancellorship July 28, 1969.
Two Indiana University vice presidents, including Gerald L. Bepko of Indiana UniversityPurdue University at Indianapolis, have been given an additional title. Bepko and Kenneth Gros Louis, vice president for Bloomington, also will be chancellors of their respective campuses. The IU trustees approved the changes recently to reflect that the men are the chief operating officers for their campuses. The vice president title reflects their standing in the IU system.
