The Maharashtra Premier League is a Twenty20 cricket league in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was founded by the Maharashtra Cricket Association, the governing body of cricket in the state. [1] [2]

The inaugural season was held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in 2023, with six franchises.

History

In the league's first seasons, teams chose players using a draft system, having previously had the opportunity to sign a limited number of players directly.

A total of 32 matches took place at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. In the final, Ratnagiri Jets defeated Kolhapur Tuskers by to win the inaugural title.

Administration

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) founded the league in 2023. The league is affiliated to the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI). The league plans to expand to eight teams and add a women's league in 2024. [3] [4]

Six teams played in the inaugural season representing Pune, Nashik, Sambhajinagar, Kolhapur, Solapur and Ratnagiri. [5] [6]

Sports play an integral part of culture in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Cricket is the most popular spectator sport in the state. Other popular sports include kabaddi and kho kho, which are played in rural areas, and field hockey, badminton, and table tennis, which are more common in urban areas, schools, and colleges. In the state's southern rural regions, annual wrestling championships such as Hind Kesari and Maharashtra Kesari are held. Games like Viti-Dandu and variations of Tag are played among children.

Although a parliamentary democracy, Indian politics has increasingly become dynastic, possibly due to the absence of a party organization, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections. Family members have also led the Congress party for most of the period since 1978 when Indira Gandhi floated the then Congress(I) faction of the party. It also is fairly common in many political parties in Maharashtra. The dynastic phenomenon is seen from national level down to district level and even village level.The three-tier structure of Panchayati Raj established in the 1960s also helped to create and consolidate the dynastic phenomenon in rural areas. Apart from government,political families also control cooperative institutions, mainly cooperative sugar factories,district cooperative banks in the state, and since the 1980s private for profit colleges. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party also features several senior leaders who are dynasts. In Maharashtra, the NCP has particularly high level of dynasticism.

Rahul Ajay Tripathi is an Indian international cricketer who made his debut for Indian cricket team in January 2023 against Sri Lanka. He also plays for Goa in domestic cricket and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ruturaj Dasharath Gaikwad is an Indian international cricketer who captains the Maharashtra cricket team in the T20, List A format and the current captain of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made his international debut for the India cricket team in July 2021 against Sri Lanka. He was the captain of the India squad which won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games. He was the leading run-scorer in the 2021 IPL season and also won emerging player of the season. He is captain of the Maharashtra team in T20 and List A cricket. He is the only Indian player to score a century against the Australian international team in T20Is.
