The Pondicherry Premier League is a Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament played in the union territories of Pondicherry in India. It is organised by the Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) and sanctioned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It was first contested in 2024 by six teams. [1]

History

The Pondicherry Premier League was launched in August 2024. [2] [3] The tournament is played in a double round-robin format followed by playoffs resulting in a total of 34 matches between 6 teams. [4]

The inaugural season of the tournament was held from 5 to 23 August 2024. [5]

Six franchises are competing in the league. The franchises are named after a zone in the Pondicherry union. [6]

The City of Puducherry on the southeast coast of India does not have a recorded history from antiquity. Puducherry has history recorded only after the advent of the colonial powers such as the Dutch, Portuguese, English and the French. Nearby places such as Arikanmedu, Kakayanthoppe, Villianur, and Bahur, which were annexed by the French East India Company over a period of time and became the Union Territory of Puducherry after Independence, have written histories that predate the colonial era.

The 2011 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 4 or the IPL 2011, was the fourth season of the Indian Premier League, the top Twenty20 cricket league in India. The tournament was hosted in India and the opening and closing ceremonies were held in M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, the home venue of the reigning champions Chennai Super Kings. The season ran from 8 April to 28 May 2011. This season the number of teams in the league went from eight to ten with the additions of the Pune Warriors India and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

In the inaugural season, Murfad Mustafa was the owner of the franchise. The team was supposed to be coached by former Australian cricketer Dav Whatmore. However he pulled out ahead of the 2020 Lanka Premier League for personal reasons and was replaced by former English cricketer Kabir Ali. Kabir Ali was again replaced by Herschelle Gibbs after he tested positive for COVID-19. Angelo Mathews was announced as the icon player and Andre Russell was named as the marquee foreign player.In June 2021, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) terminated the franchise ahead of the 2021 Lanka Premier League, due to financial issues.

The 2021 Lanka Premier League also known as Wolf777 News LPL T20, for sponsorship reasons, was the second edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in Sri Lanka. It took place from 5 to 23 December 2021. There were plans to increase the number of teams from five to six, but Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that five teams would take part, as per the first tournament.

The 2022 Indian Premier League was the fifteenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. The tournament was played from 26 March 2022 to 29 May 2022. The group stage of the tournament was played entirely in the state of Maharashtra, with Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune hosting matches.

The 2024 Lanka Premier League was the fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), a Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in Sri Lanka. The league was organized by the Sri Lanka Cricket. The tournament began on 1 July and the final was played on 21 July 2024. Five franchise teams took part in a double round-robin league followed by a playoffs. Kandy Falcons, formerly known as B-Love Kandy, were the defending champions.

The Andhra Premier League is a Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament played in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is organised by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) and sanctioned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It was first contested in 2022 by six teams.
