Meerkat was a mobile app that allowed users to broadcast live video streaming through their mobile devices. Upon registration, Meerkat users had the choice to connect their Facebook and Twitter accounts, facilitating direct streaming to their followers immediately upon going live. The app was available for both iOS and Android.
The app was launched in February 2015 and gained rapid popularity following its debut on the Product Hunt. It also saw widespread use during the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in March 2015. [3]
On October 4, 2016, Meerkat was shut down [4] and subsequently replaced by Houseparty.
Meerkat was developed by Life On Air, Inc., a team led by founder and CEO Ben Rubin. The back-end that powered the app was developed over the course of two years for a previous video product of theirs.
The company raised $12 million in venture capital funding from Greylock Partners in March 2015. [5]
On October 4, 2016, The app was withdrawn from the App Store and Play Store, and all associated services stopped. The Meerkat website now redirects to the creator's new app, Houseparty. According to the creators, the new app, which "has been in development for 10 months, and moves away from public broadcasts in favour of private chats." [4]
In March 2015, weeks after the release of Meerkat, Twitter cut off Meerkat's access to its social graph, then announced the acquisition of the competing app Periscope. [6] Twitter publicly launched Periscope on March 26, 2015. Apart from providing the similar functionality of live-streaming to users' Twitter followers, Periscope also gives users an option to let anyone play the stream back. [7] [8]
Keek is a free online social networking service that allowed its users to upload video status updates, which are called "keeks". Users can post keeks to the Keek website using a webcam or via the Keek mobile apps for iPhone, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, or Android. Users could also reply back with text or video comments, known as "keekbacks", and share content to other major social media networks. There was also an embed option so users could embed their keeks into a blog or website.

The client software is available at no charge and is localized in 21 languages.
Flud was a social news reader application for iPad, iPhone, Android and Windows Phone. It was designed to display RSS feeds from blogs and news sites into individual streams for easy viewing. In Flud, articles and stories could be stored for later reading with the Reading List, shared as a favorite read with the Flud button, and shared with Facebook, Twitter, email, Tumblr, Instapaper, and ReadItLater. Flud was headquartered in the historic Spreckels Theater Building in San Diego, California, with remote offices in Detroit and Chicago.

It was launched by Life on Air, Inc. in 2016 and was available on iOS, Android mobile devices, macOS and Google Chrome. Sima Sistani is the company's chief executive officer and co-founder. Epic Games announced the decision to discontinue Houseparty on September 9, 2021 and removed it from the app stores on the same day. It continued to function for users who had already downloaded it until October 2021.

It was founded in 2017 and launched on Android and iOS devices in February 2018. Kumu caters mainly to the Philippine market and the Filipino diaspora. In October 2020, the app topped the download charts of both the Apple App Store and Google Play in the free apps category. The app aims to become a "super app" that combines the functionalities of other apps like YouTube, TikTok, Shopee, Instagram and Facebook Messenger into one. Kumu is considering adding offline events to its platform, such as fan meetings with popular livestreamers and a convention inspired by Comic-Con called Kumu-Con, and expand beyond livestreaming to e-commerce and payments.
