The Northern line is unique on the Underground network in having two different routes through central London, two southern branches and two northern branches. Despite its name, it does not serve the northernmost stations on the Underground, though it does serve the southernmost station at Morden, the terminus of one of the two southern branches.

Pimlico terminus was a railway station built beside the new Chelsea Bridge, across the road from the new Battersea Gardens. It was at the end of a 3 mi 20 ch (5.2 km) extension of the West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway from Wandsworth Common. Confusingly, the station was not actually in Pimlico, which is on the other (northern) bank of the river; to reach it, Pimlico residents had to cross Chelsea Bridge which opened a week after the station.
The West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway (WELCPR) was an early railway company in south London between Crystal Palace station and Wandsworth, which was opened in 1856. The line was extended in 1858 to a station at Battersea Wharf near the bridge to Pimlico. Throughout its brief existence the railway was operated by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) to which it was leased in 1858 and sold in 1859. This relatively short line was of considerable importance to the history of railways of south London as it was the first line to create a corridor from the south and east towards Westminster and led to the development of London Victoria railway station.

The Falconbrook was a stream that rose in Balham and Tooting, draining much of those parishes then the south and west of the larger district of Battersea including Clapham Junction to enter the London reaches of the Thames. Before doing so, it briefly formed the border of Wandsworth Town, reflected in the SW11/SW18 boundary today.
The Shaftesbury Park Estate, commonly known as The Shaftesbury Estate, is a residential estate in Battersea in South London, England. It lies north of Lavender Hill and Clapham Common and east of Clapham Junction railway station.
Clapham Common was a railway station in Clapham formerly located between Vauxhall and Wimbledon stations. The station was opened by the London and South Western Railway on the 21 May 1838 as Wandsworth when the company opened its line from Nine Elms to Woking. Renamed in 1846, it closed on 2 March 1863 when Clapham Junction was opened in its place.
