Under the alias Sir Cartier, Playboi Carti released his first two mixtapes, THC: The High Chronicles and Young Misfit, between November 2011 and November 2012. These early works helped him develop his unique sound, which would later gain him a substantial following. In 2015, Playboi Carti gained significant attention after releasing the singles "Broke Boi" and "Fetti" on SoundCloud. The tracks quickly went viral, establishing Carti as a prominent figure in the underground rap scene. In 2016, Carti signed with Interscope Records and ASAP Mob's imprint label, AWGE. It is a remake of "I Don't Wanna Know" (2004) by Mario Winans featuring Enya and P. Diddy, which is based on a sample of the Fugees' song "Ready or Not" (1996), and itself samples Enya's "Boadicea" (1987). Winans himself returned to contribute to the song as a backing vocalist along with Travis Scott. Diddy himself would also join the artists on a remix of the song on March 17, 2023.

It was released on April 21, 2023, through XO and Republic Records, originally serving as the lead single to The Idol, Vol. 1, the now scrapped soundtrack album to the former's HBO drama television series, The Idol, which premiered on June 4, 2023. The song was later included on The Idol Episode 2 , an EP of music from the second episode of the series. The song was written by Future, the Weeknd, Metro Boomin, and Mike Dean, and produced by the latter three. It is named after John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1980 studio album of the same name.

The original music created by Canadian singer the Weeknd for the 2023 HBO drama television series The Idol, consists of six separately released EPs released between June 9, 2023, and July 3, 2023. Originally, the music was set to be released all together on June 30, 2023, as a soundtrack album titled The Idol, Vol. 1 through XO and Republic Records. However, it was later announced on June 8, 2023, that EPs containing original songs and instrumentals from the show would be released following or preceding the release of each episode. The overall soundtrack was executively produced by Tesfaye himself, EPs contain guest appearances from Mike Dean, Lily-Rose Depp, Suzanna Son, Future, Moses Sumney, Jennie, Ramsey, Lil Baby, and Troye Sivan.

The song acts as the lead single for his upcoming studio album, I Am Music. "All Red" is also the first official solo single by Playboi Carti since 2020's "@ Meh", which released four years earlier.
