Porcius Festus was the 5th procurator of Judea from about 59 to 62, succeeding Antonius Felix.

The exact time of Festus in office is not known. The earliest proposed date for the start of his term is c. 55–56,while the latest is 61. [1] These extremes have not gained much support and most scholars opt for a date between 58 and 60. F. F. Bruce says that,"The date of his [Felix's] recall and replacement by Porcius Festus is disputed,but a change in the provincial coinage of Judaea attested for Nero's fifth year points to A.D. 59" [2] Conybeare and Howson lay out an extended argument for the replacement taking place in 60. [3]
Festus inherited the problems of his predecessor in regard to the Roman practice of creating civic privileges for Jews. [4] Another issue that bedeviled his administration was the controversy between Herod Agrippa II and the priests in Jerusalem regarding the wall erected at the temple to break the view of the new wing of Agrippa's palace. [5]
During his administration,Jewish hostility to Rome was greatly inflamed by the civic privileges issue. Feelings were aroused which played an important part in the closely following Jewish War of AD 66.
The Acts of the Apostles narrate that the Apostle Paul had his final hearing before Festus (Acts 24:27). In Acts 25:12,Festus sought to induce Paul to go to Jerusalem for trial;Paul appealed to the Emperor. The appeal resulted in Paul being sent to Rome for judgment by the Emperor himself although Festus had difficulty in detailing charges against him (Acts 25-26).

Judas of Galilee,or Judas of Gamala,was a Jewish leader who led resistance to the census imposed for Roman tax purposes by Quirinius in the Judaea Province in 6 AD. He encouraged Jews not to register and those that did had their houses burnt and their cattle stolen by his followers. He is credited with beginning the "fourth philosophy" of the Jews which Josephus blames for the disastrous war with the Romans in 66–73. These events are discussed by Josephus in The Jewish War and in Antiquities of the Jews and mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles.

Ventidius Cumanus was the Roman procurator of Iudaea Province from AD 48 to c. AD 52. A disagreement between the surviving sources,the Jewish historian Josephus and the Roman Tacitus,makes it unclear whether his authority was over some or all of the province. Cumanus' time in office was marked by disputes between his troops and the Jewish population. Ventidius Cumanus failed to respond to an anti-Jewish murder in Samaritan territory which led to the violent conflict between Jews and Samaritans. Following an investigation by the governor of Syria,Gaius Ummidius Durmius Quadratus,Cumanus was sent to Rome for a hearing before the Emperor Claudius,who held him responsible for the violence and sentenced him to exile.

Historical reliability is not dependent on a source being inerrant or void of agendas since there are sources that are considered generally reliable despite having such traits.
Eleazar ben Hanania was a Jewish leader during the Great Revolt of Judea. Eleazar was the son of the High Priest Hanania ben Nedebai and hence a political figure of the 1st century Judaea Province. Eleazar was the governor of the temple at the outbreak of the rebellion in 66 CE and following the initial outbreak of the violence in Jerusalem convinced the priests of the Jewish Temple to stop service of sacrifice for the Emperor. The action,though largely symbolic,was one of the main milestones to bring a full-scale rebellion in Judea.

The Egyptian or Ha-Mitzri was a 1st-century Jewish prophetic figure,sometimes described as a sign prophet or a messianic prophet. He is said to have assembled a sizable gathering of followers atop the Mount of Olives either in preparation of an assault of Jerusalem in order to establish himself as the ruler of the people,or in the expectation that he would miraculously cause the walls of the city to fall,allowing his followers to enter the city. This group was crushed by the Roman procurator of Judaea,Antonius Felix,and the Egyptian fled,while many of his followers were killed and captured,with the remainder managing to flee and hide. The campaign was initially supported by Helena of Adiabene and but repressed by Herod Agrippa II.
