Singles from Proof

Proof is the first anthology album released by South Korean group BTS, on June 10, 2022, through Big Hit Music. The 3-disc project comprises several of the band's singles through the years; a selection of discography "favorites" chosen by the band members; and various demos and previously unreleased tracks. It also includes five new songs: the album's lead single "Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)", "Run BTS", "For Youth", "Quotation Mark", and "애매한 사이" (Young Love).

Contents

The album sold over 2 million copies worldwide on its opening day and topped the charts in 18 territories, including Australia, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It has been certified gold in New Zealand, and Poland; platinum in France; double platinum in Japan; and 3× Million in South Korea.

Background and release

"I feel thrilled every time we release new music for the first time. I hope many people will enjoy the album. Proof is a special album that closes the first chapter of BTS before going into our 10th year. We especially paid more attention to the lyrics as our message to our fans, ARMY who have been with us for nine years, is the key to this album."

On December 5, 2021, in conjunction with an announcement that BTS would be devoting more attention to solo projects, Big Hit Music revealed that preparations for the release of an upcoming group album were underway. [2] At the end of the band's final Permission to Dance on Stage concert at Allegiant Stadium on April 16, 2022, a video featuring excerpts of music videos from previous eras in the band's discography was played. The clip ended with the phrase "We are bulletproof" and the date "2022.06.10". [3] The following day, Big Hit confirmed the release of an unnamed album on June 10, with further details to be provided in the near future. [4] The album's title, Proof, was revealed through a video trailer that premiered on YouTube on May 4. The preorder period began later that same day through Weverse Shop. [5]

Per a subsequent notice posted on Weverse and shared via Twitter, the three-disc album comprises tracks spanning the past nine years of the band's discography, as well as three new songs. [6] [7] Two editions of the album, "Standard" and "Compact", were made available for purchase. The schedule for the album's rollout was published on May 5. The track listing for the album's first disc—it comprises 19 tracks—was released on May 9 (KST). The disc contains all of BTS' lead singles from "No More Dream" (2013) to "Butter" (2021), as well as the new single "Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)" which serves as the album's lead track. [8] [9] A remastered version of the band's 2013 song "Born Singer" is also included. [10] Originally released for free by the band shortly after their debut, the song samples "Born Sinner" by American rapper J. Cole from his album of the same name. [11] It has never before been included on any of the band's albums. [10] "Yet to Come" and its accompanying music video were released alongside the album on June 10. [12] [13]

Format

Two editions of the album—Standard and Compact—were initially made available. Both versions include three CDS, photocards, and postcards. The Standard Edition comes with four booklets and a limited-edition poster while the Compact Edition includes a custom booklet, a mini poster and a "discography guide". [14]

A limited collector's edition of Proof was announced through Weverse on August 28, 2022, with preorders opening that same day. Priced at ₩297,000, this version includes a 300-page photobook that features indepth interviews with the band about their discography, a 7-piece premium photo set, and several other collectibles not available with the Standard and Compact versions. Big Hit stated that sales of the album would not count towards any charts. It was released on September 28. [15] [16]

Promotion

From May 17 to May 23, 2022, Proof of Inspiration clips for each band member were released. These were followed by two sets of concept photos, called "Proof" and "Door", released from May 28 to 29 and May 31 to June 2. [17] [18] The images included light and dark photographs in front of a steel bank vault, as well as images with icy-blue lighting and variously colored lasers across the band members' faces. [19] BTS made a total of four appearances on BigHit Music Record, a program on Melon Station devoted to Big Hit Music, on May 20 and 27, June 3 and 10, and July 1 and 8. [20] On May 26, Apple Music announced the launch of a new BTS show, BTS Radio: Past & Present, on Apple Music 1. The three-episode limited series aired from May 28 to June 10. [21] The streaming service announced via Twitter on May 31 that the group broke the record for the year's biggest show with the first episode of #BTSRadio on Apple Music 1. [22] The band members' statements, unique content, and a countdown to the album release were all featured on Spotify's #SpotifyPurpleU immersive microsite experience. Fans can also use the website to make custom #MyBTSProof share cards based on their favorite songs. From June 3, billboards with the hashtag #SpotifyPurpleU appeared worldwide, including in South Korea, the US, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. [23]

Pop-up stores were launched in New York City and Los Angeles on June 10 in honor of the album's release. Goods limited to visitors only were sold at each location. [24] BTS also launched the #MyBTStory Challenge on the same day, which is only available on YouTube Shorts. At the end of the month-long challenge, a tribute video honoring a few of the shorts produced by the fans using the album title track will be made available on BTS' official YouTube channel. Each week, BTS will release its own #MyBTStory Shorts featuring a different band member, starting with V on June 17. [25] According to a Weverse announcement from Big Hit Music, the group opened an exhibition titled "2022 BTS EXHIBITION : PROOF" on September 28 in Seoul and on October 5 in Busan based on their creative journey. [26]

Live performances

BTS performed "Yet to Come" and "For Youth" on M Countdown , Music Bank , and Inkigayo . These appearances marked the band's first time performing on domestic music shows since promotions for their 2020 single "On". [27] They performed the same songs, with the addition of "Born Singer", during Proof Live in celebration of their ninth anniversary on June 13, 2022. [28] On October 8, 2022, they performed "Yet to Come" and "For Youth" at The Fact Music Awards. [29] For the first time in six months, BTS performed at the "Yet To Come" concert on October 15 at the Busan Asiad Main Stadium in Busan as part of the city's quest to host the World Expo 2030, where they debuted the performance of "Run BTS"; the footage was uploaded to their YouTube channel post-concert. [30]

Disc one opens with "Born Singer", a hip-hop and R&B track that samples American rapper J. Cole's "Born Sinner". The band reworked the original version to include their lyrics, ad-libs, and production. "Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)", the album's lead single, follows next. An alternative hip-hop track co-written by RM, J-Hope, Suga, longtime producer Pdogg, and American artists Max and Dan Gleyzer, the song's lyrics simultaneously reflect on the band's past while looking towards the future. It contains references to songs such as the band's own "Young Forever" (from 2016's The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever ) and Kanye West's "Touch the Sky". The production is laid-back, with striking background synths and old-school hip-hop beats from the early 2000s. [32]

Disc two comprises solo and sub-unit tracks, including the new song "Run BTS". A hip-hop/rock track, it features a "thrumming" [32] repetitive guitar riff, and low-key growls of J-Hope, Suga, and RM are heard during the pre-chorus. The song highlights in particular Suga's complex rapping style while showcasing Jimin, V, Jungkook and Jin's expert vocal abilities, as the singers "deliver some of the most soaring falsettos". [34] [32] Lyrically, the band voice their support for each another and expound on their attitude towards outside influences throughout the three-and-a-half-minute-long track. The band's Korean name, Bangtan Sonyeondan, is referenced in lines where the members talk about the seven of them running "bulletproof". [35]

The third disc is a mixture of 11 demos, two new songs—exclusive to the physical version of the album, and one previously-shelved track. The first of the two new songs is the disc's second track, "Young Love", a collaborative traditional R&B song by RM and Jungkook. [32] The other is track four, "Quotation Mark", by RM, J-Hope, and Jungkook, which has a retro beat similar in vigor to BTS' 2013 song "Like", from the 2 Cool 4 Skool single album. The lyrics feature numerous allusions to past songs by the band. J-Hope's stanza is a replica of his verse from "BTS Cypher: Pt.3-Killer" while other tunes evoke "Love Maze" and "Hold Me Tight". [36] The album's final song, "For Youth", opens with an audio sample from the band's 2019 concert at Wembley Stadium in London, of 90,000 fans singing along to "Young Forever". The song includes a trap beat, rag piano played slowly, and the mellow sounds of a soul band. [33] The lyrics frequently allude to "Spring Day", "Epilogue: Young Forever", "Friends", and various trials the band faced during the previous nine years. [32]

At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, Proof received an average score of 88 based on five reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". [41] Natalie Morin of Rolling Stone praised the album, describing its lead single as "a classic BTS blend of sparkling pop and old-school hip-hop that offers a hopeful promise of an even brighter future." [39] Esquire's Ammal Hassan said the album is "more than just a roundup of the best of BTS. Instead, it is a carefully curated story of the group's past and memories, much of which they reflect on in their new songs." [42]

Choi Ji-won of The Korean Herald described the album as something that "offers a throwback to the past, an invitation to the future," and "evidence of BTS' unwavering pursuit of its dreams, which it promises to continue doing in the future." [43] For Times, Elizabeth De Luna cited that Proof shows "an evolution from early raw material to a polished global presentation." [44] In her review for Consequence, Mary Siroky explained how the band "unpack an unparalleled creative journey" through the 48 songs from different eras of their career. [45]

Commercial performance

On its release day alone, Proof sold over two million copies worldwide. [46] [47] By the end of its first week, it sold a total of 2,752,496 copies. [48] The album debuted at number one in South Korea, [49] Australia, [50] Austria, [51] Belgium, [52] [53] Canada, [54] Finland, [55] Germany, [56] Japan, [57] the Netherlands, [58] New Zealand, [59] Poland, [60] Portugal, [61] and Switzerland. [62] It also reached the top ten in Italy, [63] Lithuania, [64] and Norway. [65] It peaked at number eight in the United Kingdom, becoming the group's fifth top-10 album. [66] The album debuted at number three and peaked at number one on Greece's Albums Chart, giving BTS their first number one in the country. [67]

Proof sold 514,000 copies in Japan during the period dated June 13–19, recording the highest first-week sales on the weekly Oricon Albums Chart in 2022 and achieving the fifth-highest first-week sales of all-time in Oricon chart history, after Mariah Carey's #1's (1998), Boa's Valenti (2003), and BTS' own BTS, the Best (2021) and Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey (2020). The album is the band's tenth to debut at number one in Japan, extending their record as the foreign artist with the most number-one albums in Oricon chart history. [68] [69]

In the United States, Proof became BTS' sixth consecutive number-one on the Billboard 200. It debuted atop the chart with 314,000 album-equivalent units, including 266,000 pure sales; 36,000 stream-equivalent units (52.84 million on-demand official streams); and 12,000 track-equivalent units. It earned the most significant opening week for a group and the second-largest for an album released in the country in 2022 at the time, both in units accumulated and traditional album sales [70] —Beyoncé's Renaissance eventually claimed the second-largest opening week record with 332,000 overall units in August. [71] Proof also topped Billboard 's Top Album Sales, Top Current Album Sales, Tastemaker Albums, and World Albums charts. "Yet To Come" debuted at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 while "Run BTS" peaked at number 73. [72] BTS received a total of 25 chart placements as a result. [73] The album sold a further 75,000 equivalent units in its second week. [74] Per Luminate Data's year-end report, Proof sold 422,000 physical and digital copies combined in the US, making it the best-selling group album of 2022 and the third best-selling album overall in the country. It was also the second best-selling release on CD format, with 413,000 copies sold. [75]

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)'s Global Music Report for 2022, Proof was the second best-selling physical album worldwide; [76] the fourth most-consumed album across all formats; and the highest-ranked album by a K-pop artist (of nine to make the list) on its Global Albums chart. [a] [77]

Accolades

Proof was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2022 Genie Music Awards, [78] but did not win. [79] Later that month, it was awarded Record of the Year at the Melon Music Awards and Album of the Year at the MAMA Awards. [80] [81] In January 2023, it won a Bonsang and Album of the Year at the 37th Golden Disc Awards, [82] and the Best Album Award at the 32nd Seoul Music Awards. [83] The following month, Proof won Physical Album – 3rd Quarter and Retail Album of the Year at the 12th Circle Chart Music Awards. Additionally, four of its tracks—"Born Singer", "For Youth", "Run BTS", and "Yet to Come"—were nominated in the Global Digital Music – June category, [84] with "Yet to Come" winning. [85] The album was awarded in the Best 3 Albums (Asia) category at the 37th Japan Gold Disc Awards in March. [86]

"Blood Sweat & Tears" is a song recorded in two languages by South Korean boy band BTS. It was written by "Hitman" Bang, Kim Do-hoon, RM, Suga, J-Hope, and Pdogg, with the latter of the six solely handling production. The Korean version was released on October 10, 2016, as the lead single from the band's second studio album, Wings (2016), by Big Hit Entertainment. The Japanese version of the song was released on May 10, 2017, through Universal Music Japan, as a single album that included the B-side tracks "Spring Day" and "Not Today", both also in Japanese. It is a moombahton, trap, and tropical house song with influences of dancehall and reggaeton. The song's lyrics address the pain of addictive love.

Love Yourself: Tear is the third Korean-language and sixth overall studio album by South Korean boy band BTS. The album was released on May 18, 2018, by Big Hit Entertainment. It is available in four versions and contains eleven tracks, with "Fake Love" as its lead single. The concept album explores themes relating to the pains and sorrows of separation. On May 27, 2018, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, earning 135,000 album-equivalent units and becoming BTS' highest-charting album in a Western market at the time, as well as the first Korean album to top the US albums chart and the highest-charting album by an Asian act.

"Fake Love" is a song recorded in Korean and Japanese by South Korean band BTS. It was written by "Hitman" Bang, RM, and Pdogg, with the latter as producer. The Korean version was released through Big Hit Entertainment on May 18, 2018, as the lead single from the band's third album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). Columbia Records serviced the song to US contemporary hit radio on June 12, 2018, as a single in the country. A remix, titled "Rocking Vibe", was released on June 4, 2018, and appears on the band's third compilation album, Love Yourself: Answer (2018). The Japanese version of the song was released for digital download and streaming on October 16, 2018, by Universal Music Japan as a single album that included the remix and "Airplane Pt. 2", both also in Japanese. "Fake Love" is an emo hip hop, grunge, rap-rock and electropop song which relies on rock instrumentals. The lyrics talk about a love that was once believed to be destiny, but turned out to be fake at the end.

<i>Love Yourself: Answer</i> Compilation album by South Korean boy group BTS

Love Yourself: Answer is the third Korean-language compilation album by South Korean boy band BTS. The album was released on August 24, 2018, by Big Hit Entertainment and is available in four different versions: S, E, L, and F. The album contains twenty-five tracks, including seven new songs, with the track "Idol" serving as the lead single. Most tracks are from Love Yourself: Her and Love Yourself: Tear, including some remixes. The album debuted at number one in South Korea, Canada, Japan, and the United States, becoming BTS' second chart-topping album in the US market.

Kim Seok-jin, known professionally as Jin (진), is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and member of the South Korean boy band BTS. Jin has released three solo tracks with BTS: "Awake" in 2016, "Epiphany" in 2018, and "Moon" in 2020, all of which have charted on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart. In 2019, Jin released his first independent song, the digital track "Tonight". He made his official debut as a solo artist in October 2022, with the release of the single "The Astronaut".

<i>Map of the Soul: Persona</i> 2019 EP by BTS

Map of the Soul: Persona is the sixth extended play by South Korean boy band BTS. It was released on April 12, 2019, via Big Hit Entertainment with "Boy with Luv" as its lead single. It is the follow-up to their 2018 albums Love Yourself: Tear and Love Yourself: Answer, and preceded the band's Love Yourself: Speak Yourself world tour. American singer Lauv appeared on a version of the track "Make It Right" that was released on October 18, 2019, as the album's second single.

"Lights" is a song recorded by South Korean boy band BTS for their fourth Japanese-language studio album, Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ (2020). The song was released as a double A-side single with the Japanese version of "Boy with Luv" on July 3, 2019, through Universal Music Japan. This marked the band's first original Japanese single in two years since 2017's "Crystal Snow". The song was written by Sunny Boy, Yohei, and UTA, with the latter of the three solely handling production. Musically, it is an electropop power ballad in the style of dance music, featuring a bassline and piano-driven chord progression. An uplifting song, the lyrics describe BTS and the listener as each other's light.

<i>BTS World: Original Soundtrack</i> 2019 mobile game soundtrack album by various artists

BTS World: Original Soundtrack is the soundtrack album for the Netmarble mobile game of the same name. Released on June 28, 2019, two days after the mobile game's release, the album features four singles by South Korean boy band BTS and instrumentals from the game. Its release was preceded by the singles "Dream Glow", "A Brand New Day" and "All Night". On June 26, the song "Heartbeat" was revealed in the game after its release. The album debuted atop the Gaon Album Chart and was their first #1 in Spain. Also, it became the first K-pop soundtrack to debut on the Billboard Top Soundtracks chart.

Map of the Soul: 7 is the fourth Korean-language and seventh overall studio album by South Korean boy band BTS. The album was released on February 21, 2020, by Big Hit Entertainment. It is the follow-up to their 2019 extended play Map of the Soul: Persona, with five of its songs appearing on the album. Described by BTS as "deeply personal", the album is influenced by their journey and growth of seven years since their debut. Map of the Soul: 7 has been described as a pop, R&B, and hip-hop record that contains influences from urban contemporary genres like rock, trap, and EDM. Lyrically, it touches upon themes of reflection, introspection, and self-acceptance.

Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey is the fourth Japanese and eighth overall studio album by South Korean boy band BTS. The band's first full-length Japanese offering in two years since Face Yourself (2018), the album was released on July 14, 2020, through Universal Music Japan and Big Hit Entertainment. The album contains Japanese versions of songs from Love Yourself: Answer (2018), Map of the Soul: Persona (2019), and Map of the Soul: 7 (2020), as well as four new tracks: two instrumentals, "Intro: Calling" and "Outro: The Journey", and two original songs, lead single "Stay Gold", and "Your Eyes Tell" which was written by Jungkook. Previously released 2019 single "Lights" was also included.

<i>Be</i> (BTS album) 2020 studio album by BTS

Be is the fifth Korean-language and ninth overall studio album by South Korean boy band BTS. It was released on November 20, 2020, through Big Hit Entertainment, nine months after its predecessor, Map of the Soul: 7 (2020). Created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Be was inspired by BTS' perspective of life during the pandemic. The record sees the band members contributing to various aspects of album-making process including songwriting, development, production, and visual design.

"Butter" is a song recorded by South Korean boy band BTS. It was released as a digital single on May 21, 2021, through Big Hit Music and Sony Music Entertainment, as the band's second English-language single. A disco-pop, dance-pop, and EDM track, the song was written by Jenna Andrews, RM, Alex Bilowitz, Sebastian Garcia, Robert Grimaldi, Stephen Kirk, and Ron Perry, with production handled by the last three.

"Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)" is a song by South Korean boy band BTS, released on June 10, 2022, through Big Hit Music and Universal Music Group, as the lead single from their first anthology album Proof. It is the band's first original Korean-language single since 2020's "Life Goes On". An alternative hip hop track, the song's lyrics are a reflection on the past nine years of the band's career while also looking forward to what the future holds. It was written by Dan Gleyzer, J-Hope, Max, Pdogg, RM, and Suga, with Pdogg serving as producer. The song received generally positive reviews from critics.

<i>Jack in the Box</i> (album) 2022 studio album by J-Hope

Jack in the Box is the debut studio album of South Korean rapper J-Hope of BTS, released on July 15, 2022, through Big Hit Music. It contains 10 tracks, including the lead single, "More", which preceded it on July 1, and the follow-up single, "Arson", which was released the same day as the album, together with an accompanying music video. A concept album revolving around the story of Pandora's box, Jack in the Box discusses themes of passion, ambition, humanity, insecurity, success, and anxiety about the future. Primarily an old-school hip hop-influenced record, the album features a blend of genres, including pop, grunge, and R&B.
