Stamford station, officially known as the Stewart B. McKinney Transportation Center [5] or the Stamford Transportation Center, is a major railroad station in the city of Stamford, Connecticut, serving passengers traveling on Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. In addition, it is also a major bus terminal for Greyhound, Peter Pan, and CTtransit buses. In 2018, the station averaged over 15,000 Metro-North boardings on weekdays, making it the busiest station on the system aside from Grand Central Terminal. [4] Its official name honors politician Stewart McKinney.
The split for the New Canaan Branch is just northeast of the station. Downtown Stamford is directly north of the station; the entrance to the station on the north side is marked by the Stamford Cone, a work of public sculpture situated at the top of Gateway Commons, while the South End is located directly south.
The station has a 9-car-long side platform on the south side, a 10-car-long platform on the north side and two high-level 12-car-long island platforms. [6] : 20 The main station concourse straddles the tracks of the Northeast Corridor, and contains the ticket booth, a passenger waiting area, and shops. Below the platform level is an MTA police station, other shops, a Greyhound/Peter Pan office and CT Transit Customer Information Center. Stairs and escalators lead to the platform level. On the south side of the station, across an access street, is a large parking garage connected to the concourse by one pedestrian bridge and directly connected to the east end of the platforms by a second bridge (both bridges connect to Level 4 of the garage).
A bus station is located just to the north of the train station, underneath a large bridge carrying Interstate 95. Taxis pick up passengers at a stand on the south side of the station. A car rental agency is located southwest of the station building.
Stamford receives very frequent rail service on the New Haven Line. During peak hours, trains at Stamford come in intervals as little as three or seven minutes apart. [7] Reverse commute trains during rush hours also operate relatively frequently, at intervals of ten to twenty minutes. [7] Off-peak trains in both directions arrive at Stamford every thirty to forty minutes, but usually within a half-hour of each other. [7] Stamford is the busiest Metro-North Railroad station other than Grand Central Terminal, averaging 15,000 boardings on weekdays in 2018. [4]
The station divides the New Haven Line into an outer zone and an inner zone. Outer zone trains usually run local from New Haven to Stamford, then run express to Grand Central, normally stopping only at Harlem-125th Street. Inner zone trains usually originate here and run local all the way to Grand Central. Passengers transferring between zones can make cross-platform interchanges in Stamford.
In the 2000s, Stamford and Greenwich received increasing numbers of reverse commuters who work in Stamford but live in New York City. Reverse commuting doubled from 1997 to 2007, with 1,900 daily reverse commuters by 2007. Metro-North added trains and express service to serve these commuters. As financial companies moved to Stamford from Manhattan, some employees became reverse commuters. Larger companies farther away than a few minutes walk from the station routinely provided shuttle service for their workers. [8]
As of 2014, Stamford has been a central stop for a special "Yankee Clipper" Train. The direct train runs to and from all weeknight and weekend games to Yankees–East 153rd Street to serve New York Yankees baseball games and New York City FC soccer matches at Yankee Stadium. The trains are timed to arrive between 45 minutes and 2 hours prior to the start of the game, and depart between 20 and 45 minutes after they end. [9]
Due to ridership growth, ConnDOT announced on March 19, 2007 that it would extend more Shore Line East trains to Stamford during peak hours. [10] To coincide with the extension of this service, Metro-North added another five trains on the New Haven Line to cope with the increases in passenger demand at Stamford. [10] Shore Line East service to Stamford was suspended indefinitely on March 16, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. [11] [12] Service resumed on October 7, 2024. [13]
Amtrak also operates three routes which stop at Stamford: the Acela , the only high-speed rail service in the United States, the Northeast Regional , providing local service along the Northeast Corridor, on which Stamford is a vital station, and the Vermonter, the only train from Connecticut that goes to Vermont. Stamford is now the second-busiest Amtrak station in Connecticut, after New Haven's Union Station. [14]
Regular daily train service began in Stamford on January 1, 1849. In 1867, a depot was built one block east of the present location. The railroad at that time consisted of two tracks and passed through town on ground level (crossing the streets at grade). In the mid-1890s, two more tracks were added to the line and most crossings were elevated and bridged; the 1867 depot was razed and replaced. [15]
In 1980, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded $50 million for a new station and parking garage in Stamford. The cost was paid 70% by the FRA, 20% by the state, and 10% by the city. Construction began in 1983. Garage construction was soon halted due to cracks in support beams caused by a contractor omitting components. Additional of a support column failed to solve the issue; the FRA took over the project. The garage and station opened in 1987. [16]
Architecture critic Paul Goldberger, writing for The New York Times in 1987, criticized the station for "a harshness almost unequaled in contemporary architecture" as well as for cost overruns and many functional failings, including the lack of shelter for the track platforms. The route from the cross-tracks waiting room to the platform was so long and indirect that passengers who waited indoors until a train's arrival was announced could not get to the platform in time to board it. [17] Despite these issues, Stamford became the line's busiest station aside from Grand Central by 1989. [16]
A complete renovation of the station in the early 2000s, provided for in the original design of the overhead structure, addressed the problems. The two platforms were made island platforms, capable of serving four tracks. Added features included platform canopies, stairs and escalators directly from the waiting room for the tracks, and a new platform crossover, connecting to a 1,200-space addition to the parking garage. [18]
In 2006, the state indicated plans to replace the 1987-built garage. [19] That plan was cancelled in 2008; by 2012, the state planned to pursue privately-funded transit-oriented development on the garage parcel, with replacement parking possibly located up to a quarter-mile away. [20] Temporary repairs to the deteriorating original garage were made in 2015; even so, only 200 of the 727 spaces were usable by 2019. [18]
Construction of a new 928-space, $82 million parking garage northwest of the station began in October 2021. [21] Located over State Street includes a 320-foot (98 m)-long footbridge connecting to the main waiting room plus a ramp to the southbound (Track 5) side platform. [22] [16] After delay, the new garage opened on February 26, 2024. [23] [24] This allowed demolition of the 1980s-built garage and footbridge (at a cost of $9 million) to begin. [22] Demolition of the footbridge took place from March 11 to late April 2024, followed by demolition of the garage. Demolition is expected to be complete by late 2024. [25]
New Haven Union Station is the main railroad passenger station in New Haven, Connecticut. It is the third such station in the city of New Haven, preceded by both an 1848 built station in a different location, and an 1879 built station near the current station's location. Designed by noted American architect Cass Gilbert, the present beaux-arts Union Station was completed and opened in 1920 after the previous Union Station was destroyed by fire. It served the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad for the next five decades, but fell into decline following World War II along with the United States railroad industry as a whole.
Shore Line East (SLE) is a commuter rail service which operates along the Northeast Corridor through southern Connecticut, United States. The rail service is a fully owned subsidiary of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and is operated under the CT Rail brand. SLE provides service seven days a week along the Northeast Corridor between New London and New Haven; limited through service west of New Haven to Bridgeport and Stamford operates during weekday rush hours. Cross-platform transfers to Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line trains are available at New Haven for service to southwestern Connecticut and New York City. Pre-COVID, around 2,200 riders used the service on weekdays.
The New Haven Line is a 72.7 mi (117.0 km) commuter rail line operated by the Metro-North Railroad in the U.S. states of New York and Connecticut. Running from New Haven, Connecticut, to New York City, the New Haven Line joins the Harlem Line in Mount Vernon, New York, and continues south to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The New Haven Line carries 125,000 passengers every weekday and 39 million passengers a year. The busiest intermediate station is Stamford, with 8.4 million passengers, or 21% of the line's ridership.
The New Canaan Branch is an 8.2-mile (13 km) long branch line of the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line that begins from a junction east of downtown Stamford, Connecticut, north to New Canaan. It opened in 1868 as the New Canaan Railroad.
The Waterbury Branch is a branch of the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, running north from a junction in the Devon section of Milford to Waterbury, Connecticut. Originally built as the Naugatuck Railroad, it once continued north to Winsted. The part north of Waterbury is now leased from CTDOT by the Railroad Museum of New England, which operates excursion trains from Thomaston station through their operating subsidiary Naugatuck Railroad ; this name was chosen in homage of the original railroad. The trackage ends in Torrington, but Metro-North service on the branch ends at Waterbury. There are conceptual plans to extend service from its current terminus in Waterbury to Hartford via Bristol and New Britain. Currently, riders that want to continue to New Britain and Hartford have to transfer to an express bus operated by CTtransit at Waterbury. All trains on this branch operate as shuttles between Waterbury and Bridgeport.
The New Haven–Springfield Line is a railroad line owned by Amtrak from New Haven, Connecticut, north to Springfield, Massachusetts, serving the Knowledge Corridor. As a branch of the Northeast Corridor just north of New Haven State Street station, it is served by approximately seven daily Northeast Regional round trips, some continuing from New Haven to Washington, D.C., along the Corridor and others terminating at New Haven as shuttles. On weekends, there is one train daily to Roanoke, Virginia. It is also served by the daily Vermonter, which starts in Washington, D.C., and continues north from Springfield, finally terminating in St. Albans, Vermont. The line is part of the Inland Route connecting Boston and New York via Hartford, Springfield, and Worcester, in contrast to the "Shore Line" along the Connecticut Shore and through Rhode Island.
New Rochelle station is a Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak train station located in New Rochelle, New York. The station serves Metro-North's New Haven Line and Amtrak's Northeast Regional; Bee-Line Bus System buses serve a bus stop just outside the station. As of August 2006, weekday commuter ridership was 4,020, and there are 1,381 parking spots. It is the busiest New Haven Line station in Westchester County.
South Norwalk station is a commuter rail station in Norwalk, Connecticut, served by the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line. It is owned and managed by the Norwalk Transit District. The station is the point where the New Haven Line's Danbury Branch connects to the Northeast Corridor, as well as a peak-hour terminal for some express trains. Just east of the station are the South Norwalk Railroad Bridge and SoNo Switch Tower Museum.
New Haven State Street station is a commuter rail station located on State Street in downtown New Haven, Connecticut. The secondary railroad station in the city, it is located 0.8 miles (1.3 km) northeast of the much larger New Haven Union Station and is intended to offer easier access to New Haven's downtown business district. It is served by Shore Line East and Hartford Line commuter trains, Amtrak Hartford Line trains, Springfield-terminating Northeast Regional trains, and Valley Flyer trains, and a limited number of Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line trains. Originally proposed in 1996, State Street opened on June 7, 2002. A second platform opened on June 8, 2018, in time for the beginning of Hartford Line service.
Bridgeport station is a shared Amtrak and Metro-North Railroad train station along the Northeast Corridor serving Bridgeport, Connecticut and nearby towns. On Metro-North, the station is the transfer point between the Waterbury Branch and the main New Haven Line. Amtrak's inter-city Northeast Regional and Vermonter service also stop at the station. In addition the transfer point for Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority buses, the departure point for the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry across Long Island Sound to Port Jefferson, New York, and both the Total Mortgage Arena and the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater are located adjacent to the station.
Naugatuck station is a commuter rail station on the Waterbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, located in Naugatuck, Connecticut.
Stratford station is a commuter rail station on the Northeast Corridor in Stratford, Connecticut. It is served by the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line plus limited CT Rail Shore Line East service. The station has two high-level side platforms, each four cars long, serving the four tracks of the Northeast Corridor. The station has 294 parking spaces, which are all owned by the state.
Milford station is a commuter rail station on the Northeast Corridor in Milford, Connecticut. It is served by the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line plus limited CT Rail Shore Line East service.
Old Saybrook station is a regional rail station in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. It is served by both Amtrak Northeast Regional intercity trains and CT Rail Shore Line East commuter service.
West Haven station is a commuter rail station on the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, located in West Haven, Connecticut. The station was built on Sawmill Road between Hood Terrace and Railroad Avenue, in the Elm Street-Wagner Place neighborhood. West Haven has 660 parking spaces in on-site lots as well as bicycle facilities. The station is accessible. West Haven has full service on the New Haven Line.
Meriden Transit Center is a train station on the New Haven–Springfield Line located in Meriden, Connecticut. It is served by Amtrak's Northeast Regional, Valley Flyer, and Vermonter, in addition to Hartford Line commuter rail service, consisting of Connecticut Department of Transportation and Amtrak trains. The station was rebuilt from 2014 to 2017 for the Hartford Line service, which began on June 16, 2018.
Glenbrook station is a commuter rail stop on the New Canaan Branch of the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, located in the Glenbrook section of Stamford, Connecticut.
Springdale station is a commuter rail station on the New Canaan Branch of the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line in Springdale, Stamford, Connecticut. The station opened in 1868, and was rebuilt in 1972.

Barnum station is a planned regional rail station to be located on the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line in East Bridgeport, Connecticut. The station will be named after the circus showman and former Bridgeport mayor P. T. Barnum, and will be located on the south side of Barnum Avenue between Seaview Avenue and Pembroke Street. A feasibility study was released in July 2013, followed by preliminary planning funding in July 2014 and an application for planning funding in June 2015. By January 2017, the station was planned to open in 2021. However, the project was indefinitely postponed in January 2019.
