History

Thyamida was one of the four provinces of Thesprotia Prefecture of Greece. Its territory corresponded with that of the current municipality Igoumenitsa, except the municipal units Margariti and Perdika. Its seat was the town Igoumenitsa. [1] It was abolished in 2006.

The Gulf of Corinth or the Corinthian Gulf is a deep inlet of the Ionian Sea, separating the Peloponnese from western mainland Greece. It is bounded in the east by the Isthmus of Corinth which includes the shipping-designed Corinth Canal and in the west by the Strait of Rion which widens into the shorter Gulf of Patras and of which the narrowest point is crossed since 2004 by the Rio–Antirrio bridge. The gulf is bordered by the large administrative divisions : Aetolia-Acarnania and Phocis in the north, Boeotia in the northeast, Attica in the east, Corinthia in the southeast and south and Achaea in the southwest. The gulf is in tectonic movement comparable to movement in parts of Iceland and Turkey, growing by 10 mm (0.39 in) per year.

Greek National Road 6

Greek National Road 6 is a national road in north-central Greece. It begins at the port of Igoumenitsa and ends at Volos, passing through the towns Ioannina, Metsovo, Trikala and Larissa. The section between Metsovo and Volos is part of the European route E92. The road runs through five regional units and the regions of Epirus and Thessaly.

Egnatia Odos (modern road)

Egnatia Odos or Egnatia Motorway is the Greek part of European route . It is a motorway in Greece that extends from the western port of Igoumenitsa to the eastern Greek–Turkish border at Kipoi. It runs a total of 670 km (420 mi). The megaproject began in 1994 and was completed in 2009 at a cost of €5.93 billion ; it was managed by the state-owned company Egnatia Odos, S.A.

The Katara Pass or Metsovo Pass is a mountain pass in the Pindus mountains in northern Greece. It is 5 km northeast of the town Metsovo. Situated on the border of Epirus and Thessaly, it forms the divide between the river basins of the Aoos to the southwest and the Pineios to the east. Its elevation is about 1,705 m (5,594 ft) making it one of the highest in the nation. The Greek National Road 6 crosses the Katara Pass. With the opening of the Egnatia Odos motorway which passes through tunnels further south, traffic has sharply declined.

Elina (Epirus)

Keramitsa is perched 620m, half way up Mount Velouna, in the rugged mountains of Eastern Mourgána (1806m). On the foothills of which many a bloody battle of the Greek Civil War were fought.

For more than two millennia, the harbour has been involved in military and commercial operations.

Graikochori is a village in the district of Thesprotia in Epirus, Greece. It is within the Igoumenitsa municipality. In the 2011 census the village had a population of 1,904 inhabitants.
