Wichnor Junction railway station was a short-lived station in Staffordshire from 1855 to 1877. [1]

The South Staffordshire Railway opened their South Staffordshire line from Walsall to Wichnor Junction for passenger traffic on 9 April 1849. Initially they had an agreement with the Midland Railway for running powers over the line through to Burton upon Trent, but a deterioration in relations in 1853 led to the Midland revoking the running powers forcing the construction of a new station at Wichnor for the interchange of passengers and goods. The London and North Western Railway took over the South Staffordshire line from early 1861. Later that year the station was the scene of a dispute between the two companies as reported in the Morning Post of 9 November 1861:

The leviathans of the railway world, the London and North-Western and the Midland Companies, had a sharp contest last week for a price of no mean order - all the traffic from Burton-upon-Trent, amounting altogether to 300,000 tons annually. Hitherto the Midland Company has enjoyed the exclusive right of entry into Burton, but running powers having been obtained last session by the London and North-Western Company over the Midland branch from the Wichnor junction of the South Staffordshire line, on Friday last the North-Western Company announced their intention of running into Burton. The Midland officials lost no time in sending a large staff of navvies and two powerful engines, with instructions to remove the rails rather than allow the entry of a rival on their pet goods station. On the North-Western train approaching, the navvies set to work with a will, and half a dozen rails were soon raised, thus placing the new comers hors de combat. Their train ran back to Lichfield for instructions, and was about to return with an army of platelayers and labourers to contest the disputed ground when a telegram was received from the Midland officials at Derby, authorising the London and North-Western trains entering Burton. This is a great concession for the latter company, as the Midland having now an independent route into London, much of the traffic hitherto going south (viâ Rugby), and north (viâ Crewe), would have been diverted viâ the Great Northern and Lancashire and Yorkshire Lines respectively. The new branch lines of the London and North-Western Company have been made on land purchased (at an enormous cost) from the Marquis of Anglesea, and Messrs. Samuel Allsopp and Sons, the eminent brewers of that town. [3]

Gradually relations improved and running powers for the LNWR were re-instated. By 1877 the station was no longer needed for passenger traffic, the station master moved to Croxall and from 8 April 1878 the remaining staff at Wichnor Junction were placed under his supervision. [4]

Lichfield Trent Valley is a railway station on the outskirts of the city of Lichfield in Staffordshire, England. It is one of two stations in Lichfield, the other being Lichfield City in the city-centre. It is a split-level station, with low level platforms served by the Trent Valley section of the West Coast Main Line, and a single high level platform, which is the northern terminus of the Cross-City Line.

The Stafford and Uttoxeter Railway was authorised by Act of Parliament on 29 July 1862, to build a line between the towns of Stafford and Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, England. It opened for traffic in 1867. It opened on 23 December 1867. Construction cost had much exceeded estimates, and income was poor, so that the company was always in financial difficulty. It was placed in receivership in 1875. The Great Northern Railway (GNR) had running powers to Uttoxeter and was persuaded to acquire the company, which it did in 1881. The GNR spent a considerable sum on improving the line, but it never made money and it was closed to passengers on 4 December 1939. Goods traffic ceased in 1951, except for a short stub to RAF Stafford; this too closed in 1975.

Uttoxeter railway station serves the town of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England. It is on the Crewe–Derby line, which is also a Community rail line known as the North Staffordshire line. The station is owned by Network Rail and managed by East Midlands Railway.

The Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension of the Great Northern Railway was an English railway network built by the GNR to get access to coal resources in the area to the north and west of Nottingham. The Midland Railway had obstructed the GNR in its attempts to secure a share of the lucrative business of transporting coal from the area, and in frustration the GNR built the line. The line was forked: it reached Pinxton in 1875 and a junction with the North Staffordshire Railway at Egginton, approaching Burton on Trent in 1878. The line cut through Derby, resulting in considerable demolition of housing there.

The South Staffordshire line is a partially mothballed and active former mainline that connects Burton-upon-Trent to Lichfield in Staffordshire and formerly then to the West Midlands towns of Walsall, Wednesbury, Dudley and Stourbridge. However, Dudley and Stourbridge were already joined to the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway's (OW&WR) line just north of Dudley Station. It in essence, continued to Stourbridge along with Wednesbury and Walsall.

The Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway (OW&WR) was a railway company in England. It built a line from Wolvercot Junction near Oxford to Worcester, Stourbridge, Dudley and Wolverhampton, as well as some branches.

The South Yorkshire Railway was a railway company with lines in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England.

The South Staffordshire Railway (SSR) was authorised in 1847 to build a line from Dudley in the West Midlands of England through Walsall and Lichfield to a junction with the Midland Railway on the way to Burton upon Trent, with authorised share capital of £945,000. It was supported by the newly-formed London and North Western Railway (LNWR) and the Midland Railway, giving each company access to important areas. It completed its main line in 1849. As collieries in the Cannock region rose in importance, it built a second main line from Walsall to Rugeley, as well as numerous short spurs and connections to lines it intersected. Colliery working in the Cannock area expanded enormously, and mineral traffic carryings increased in step.

The Midland Railway branches around Walsall were built to give the Midland Railway independent access to Wolverhampton, and to a colliery district at Brownhills. The Midland Railway had a stake in the South Staffordshire Railway giving it access to Walsall, and the Walsall and Wolverhampton Railway (W&WR) was opened in 1872. At first the W&WR was independent and neutral, but it was acquired by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), and then sold by that company to the Midland Railway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Leicester–Burton upon Trent line</span> Freight-only railway line in England

The Leicester–Burton upon Trent line is a freight-only railway line in England linking the Midland Main Line near Leicester to the Derby to Birmingham line at Burton upon Trent. The line was built by the Midland Railway, which had acquired the Leicester and Swannington Railway in 1847, improving it and extending it. It opened throughout in 1849. The line connected an exceptional number of collieries and industrial premises, and several industrial branch lines were built radiating from it. Swadlincote was already an established community engaged in industry and there was a complex of branch lines there. The passenger service on the line was discontinued in 1964, and much of the mining-based industry has closed down; quarrying is the dominant residual originating traffic. There are proposals to reopen the passenger service, and these are under review at present (2022).

The Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway was a railway company formed to connect the places in its name. When it sought Parliamentary authorisation, it was denied the southern section, and obliged to use the Monmouthshire Railway between Pontypool and Newport.

The Ambergate, Nottingham and Boston and Eastern Junction Railway was a British railway company, which hoped to connect Lancashire with the port of Boston, in Lincolnshire, England. It was authorised in 1846 but was unable to raise much money. It opened a standard gauge line from a junction near Nottingham to Grantham in 1853. At Nottingham it was to rely on the Midland Railway, but that company was hostile and obstructive.

The Worcester and Hereford Railway started the construction of a standard gauge railway between the two cities in 1858. It had needed the financial assistance of larger concerns, chiefly the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway, and the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway. It opened its line progressively from 1859 to 1861, delayed by exceptionally difficult tunnelling at Colwall and Ledbury. The company was purchased by the West Midland Railway in 1860, and that company amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1863.
