The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa,located in Cape Town,Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality.
Although the Democratic Alliance of South Africa in its present form is fairly new,its roots can be traced far back in South African political history,through a complex sequence of splits and mergers.
Masizole Mnqasela is a South African politician,currently the founding leader of the Alliance of Citizens for Change. He formerly served as the 7th Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. He was previously a Member of Parliament with the Democratic Alliance from 2009 to 2014,the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs,and the country's third youngest parliamentarian after the African National Congress's Mduduzi Manana,and the Congress of the People's Luzelle Adams.
Daniel Plato,known as Dan Plato,is a South African politician and a former Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. He served from June 2011 until October 2018 and again from January 2022 until February 2024. He is the former mayor of Cape Town,a position he held for two nonconsecutive terms from May 2009 until June 2011 and again from November 2018 until October 2021. From June 2011 to October 2018,he was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety.
Geordin Gwyn Hill-Lewis is a South African politician who is the Mayor of Cape Town. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he was elected mayor in November 2021.
Kevin John Mileham is a South African politician,a Member of the South African Parliament for the Democratic Alliance and the Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. Mileham was first elected to Parliament on 3 June 2013,replacing Athol Trollip. His first parliamentary role was as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development. After the 2014 National Elections,he was appointed the Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. In February 2019,he was appointed as Shadow Minister of Energy. After the National and Provincial Elections on 8 May 2019,Mileham was appointed as Shadow Minister of the expanded portfolio of Mineral Resources and Energy. Mileham was re-elected to Parliament in 2024.
Theunis Louis "Theuns" Botha is a retired South African politician of the Democratic Alliance. Previously,he served as the Western Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health. He also served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2015. He was Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2009 and Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape from 2002 to 2012. Botha was also Deputy Provincial Leader of the party from 2012 to 2015.
Joseph Job McGluwa is a South African politician who was the leader of the Democratic Alliance in the North West province from 2015 to 2020. He has been a member of the National Assembly since 16 August 2018. He was previously in the National Assembly from 2009 to 2015. McGluwa was a member of the North West Provincial Legislature from 2015 to 2018.
Gizella Opperman is a South African politician from the Northern Cape serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2019. Opperman is a party member of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Mohammed Haniff Hoosen is a South African politician who served as a Member for the National Assembly for the Independent Democrats (ID) (2007–2014) and for the Democratic Alliance (DA) (2014–2024). Within the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet,he was the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs from 2014 to 2019,the Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2019 to 2020 and the DA's spokesperson on the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General from 2020 until his resignation in 2024.
Karabo Lerato Khakhau is a South African politician and a Member of the South African National Assembly for the Democratic Alliance since November 2022. Prior to this,she served as a DA Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature from May 2019 until November 2022. Aged 21 years at the time of her election to the Provincial Legislature,she became the youngest ever Member of Provincial Legislature in South Africa. Khakhau is a former President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Town (UCT) for the council term 2017/18. In this election she received the highest number of votes amongst all candidates in the institution.
Cilliers Brink is a South African politician who was Mayor of Tshwane from 28 March 2023 until 26 September 2024. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he was the party's Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2020 until 2023 and a Member of Parliament (MP) from 2019 to 2023. He was the party's Shadow Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs between 2019 and 2020.
Dirk Jan Stubbe is a South African politician who served as a Member of the National Assembly for the Democratic Alliance from September 2010 to May 2019 and again from September 2020 until May 2024. Prior to his tenure in the National Assembly,Stubbe was a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature.
Samantha Jane Graham is a South African politician from the Eastern Cape who was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in the 2019 general election and re-elected in the 2024 general election as a member of the Democratic Alliance. Graham has been the Deputy Minister of Electricity since 2024. Graham served as the shadow deputy minister of public works and infrastructure from 2019 to 2020 and as the shadow minister for the portfolio between 2020 and 2023,when she was named shadow minister of electricity. She is a former councillor of the Dr Beyers NaudéLocal Municipality.
Leonard Jones Basson is a South African politician from the North West Province. He has represented the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014 and has been the party's provincial leader in the North West since November 2020. In July 2024 he was elected as the chairperson of the National Assembly's Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation.
Adrian Christopher Roos is a South African politician and a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly for the Democratic Alliance party. Within the DA's Shadow cabinet,he served as Deputy Shadow Minister of Home Affairs from 2020 until 2024.
Eleanore Rochelle Jacquelene Spies is a South African politician who has been a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance since 2019.
Tsepo Winston Mhlongo is a South African politician. As a member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg until the 2014 national election,when he was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. After that,he was appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform. Mhlongo became the Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation in January 2017 before he was selected to be Shadow Minister of Sports,Arts and Culture in June 2019. On 1 December 2023,Mhlongo was expelled from the DA and lost his parliamentary membership. He has since joined ActionSA.
Isaac Mbulelo Sileku is a South African politician who has been the Western Cape's Provincial Minister of Mobility since 2024. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2022. Sileku previously served as the Deputy Executive Mayor of the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality from 2016 until 2019 and as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces from the Western Cape from 2019 to 2022.
Theo Willem Coetzee was a South African politician. He served as a member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Democratic Alliance from 2009 until his defection to the Freedom Front Plus ahead of the 2014 general election. From 2019 Coetzee was the sole representative of the Freedom Front Plus in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.
