At the previous election, held in 2023, the Labour Party increased the number of seats they had on the council by 1 to have 24 seats. The Conservative Party lost 2 seats and the Greens gained 1. [8] As a result, the council remained under Labour control. [8] [9]

The Liberal Democrats went into the election defending their last seat on the Council, in Tarring ward, having been in overall control of the Council as recently as 2003. [10]
