The 2024 Worthing Borough Council election was held on Thursday 2 May 2024, alongside the other local elections being held in the United Kingdom on the same day. [1]
Labour retained their majority on the council. [2] Three days after the election, three Labour councillors resigned from the party, although the party retained its majority. [3]
At the 2024 United Kingdom General Election, Council leader Dr Beccy Cooper was elected as the MP for Worthing West. [4] As a result, she resigned as Leader and as a Councillor on Wednesday July 10th, neccecitating a by-election in Marine Ward. [5] Cllr Sophie Cox replaced Beccy as Leader on Tuesday 23rd July 2024. [6]
Worthing Borough Council elects a third of its councillors 3 out of every 4 years, with elections to West Sussex County Council in the 4th year. [7] 13 seats out of 37 were up for election in 2024.
At the previous election, held in 2023, the Labour Party increased the number of seats they had on the council by 1 to have 24 seats. The Conservative Party lost 2 seats and the Greens gained 1. [8] As a result, the council remained under Labour control. [8] [9]
The Liberal Democrats went into the election defending their last seat on the Council, in Tarring ward, having been in overall control of the Council as recently as 2003. [10]

Adur is a local government district in West Sussex, England. It is named after the River Adur which flows through the area. The council is based in the town of Shoreham-by-Sea, and the district also contains the town of Southwick, the large village of Lancing and a modest rural hinterland inland. The district had a population of 64,626 at the 2021 census.
Arun is a local government district in West Sussex, England. Its council is based in Littlehampton. The district's other towns are Arundel and Bognor Regis. The district is named after the River Arun, which runs through the centre of the district. Parts of the district fall within the South Downs National Park.

The Conservatives performed poorly, losing a third of their 2023 share of the vote and half their seats. Reform UK also lost their only seat, which they had gained in May 2023 following a Conservative Councillor switching parties. The Labour group leader, Heather Bishop, lost her seat.
Rebecca "Beccy" Cooper is a British politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Worthing West since 2024. She was leader of Worthing Borough Council from 2022 to 2024.
