Birkenhead Woodside was a railway station located at Woodside, in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire. It served both local services within Cheshire and long-distance services to southern England, including London.
Birkenhead Woodside railway station was opened on March 31, 1878, to replace the increasingly inadequate passenger facilities provided at Birkenhead Monks Ferry station. [3] [4] The terminus was constructed further inland than originally planned to avoid the demolition of the Mersey ferries workshop situated on the riverbank. The station was built on an east–west axis, with the lines servicing the station coming from the south. Access to the station was via a half-mile tunnel from the south, curving eastward into the station. This design was consistent with Liverpool termini, with the exception of Liverpool Exchange, which lacked tunnel access. [5] [ page needed ]
To connect with the existing track of the Chester and Birkenhead Railway, a half mile-long tunnel from Woodside to alongside the existing Monks Ferry tunnel entrance, near Grange Lane, was constructed using the cut-and-cover method, with most of its length running under Chester Street. [6]
The station was characterized by its cramped layout, with Platform 1 measuring 537 ft (164 m) in length. Longer coaching stock was not permitted to be stabled on the curved part of No.3 siding. [7]
The station was a grandiose building, with two semi cylindrical roofs covering much of the platforms. However, the size of the station made it have only five short (but wide) platforms, as much of the space was taken up by middle tracks and a roadway. [3]
The station building was known to local rail users as "the wrong way round"; for the majority of the station's life, its original rear entrance was used as the main booking hall, and Woodside's 'front' entrance was mainly for handling parcels. The latter entrance, covered in a porte-cochere to allow travelling gentry to avoid inclement weather, faced the graving dock on the south side of the station. It had been intended that passengers disembarking from the nearby ferry terminal of the same name would use this entrance. Unfortunately, the ferry companies were slow at co-operating and when the tram terminus opened in front of the ferry terminal in the early 1900s, the decision was made to keep the small 'back' entrance a permanent fixture. That was very unfortunate, as passengers arriving at the station never got to see the huge sandstone fireplaces, decorative brick work and massive timber roof trusses holding up the roof of the intended booking hall, which has been described by Marcus Binney of Save Britain's Heritage as "a station of truly baronial proportions and being worthy of any London terminus".
Birkenhead Woodside served as the terminus for local services to Chester, Helsby, West Kirby, and destinations in north Wales via Ruabon. [4] Additionally, it offered routes to Great Western Railway (GWR) services to Chester General, Wrexham General, Ruabon, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton Low Level, Birmingham Snow Hill, and London Paddington. Daily, through trains to the Kent coast via Oxford, Reading and Redhill were also available, jointly operated with the Southern Railway. Southern Railway's green-livered stock could be seen at Woodside on alternate days. Moreover, summer services to Bournemouth were provided.
The Beeching Report, in 1963, recommended the closure of three of Merseyside's mainline terminal stations: Liverpool Exchange, Liverpool Central High Level and Birkenhead Woodside. It also recommend the closure of the Liverpool Exchange to Southport electric commuter route and of all routes in to Central High Level station. However, the electric lines from Liverpool to the Wirral were recommended for retention. Long- and medium- distance routes served by the three termini were to be concentrated on Lime Street station. Liverpool City Council viewed matters differently from Beeching by proposing the retention of the suburban services around the city and their integration into a regional Merseyside-wide rapid-transit network. That approach was supported by the Merseyside Area Land Use and Transportation Study, the MALTS report. Liverpool City Council's proposal was adopted and Merseyrail was born. [8] [ page needed ]
By early 1967, there were still six through trains on weekdays between Birkenhead Woodside and London Paddington. In March of that year, the route was effectively curtailed at Wolverhampton, as a result of the introduction of electric trains on the West Coast Main Line. [9] At the same time, the last steam service from the station took place, in the withdrawal of through services to Birmingham. [9]
Only the diesel train service to Chester and trains to Helsby remained to use the station. The station closed to passengers on 5 November 1967 [1] and despite being the only listed terminus in Merseyside, was demolished within a year. The Chester and Helsby route was cut back to Rock Ferry after the station's closure. In 1993, the Chester line was electrified and incorporated into Merseyrail; [10] the branch from Hooton to Helsby was electrified as far as Ellesmere Port a year later and also incorporated into Merseyrail.
Today, the only evidence of Woodside's existence is a part of the station wall, a road bridge and the tunnel, which lay at the station throat. The gates of the station were reused at a house in Gayton. [4] The rest of the land is now used as a bus park and the Woodside Business Park. The half-mile tunnel access to the site is not impeded and so there is provision for future modes of transport.
Thomas (known as Tom) Owen, the father of First World War poet Wilfred Owen, was station master at Woodside from 1898 [11] until returning to Shropshire (from where he had moved to Birkenhead) to take up a senior post at Shrewsbury railway station in 1907. [12] During that period the family lived at three successive homes in the Tranmere area of the town. [13] and Wilfred attended the Birkenhead Institute High School (since demolished) for his education.

Merseyrail serves 69 stations, 67 of which it manages, across two lines – the Northern Line and the Wirral Line. The network uses 750 V DC third rail electrified lines having 75.0 miles (120.7 km) of routes, of which 6.5 miles (10.5 km) are underground. Since January 2023, Merseyrail commenced replacing its train fleet, withdrawing the Class 507 and 508 trains and introducing 53 new Class 777 trains. The network carried 25.5 million passengers in the 2022/2023 statistical period.
Merseytravel is the passenger transport executive, responsible for the coordination of public transport in the Liverpool City Region in North West England. Merseytravel was established on 1 December 1969 as the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive. From 1 April 2014, with the creation of the Liverpool City Region, Merseytravel expanded its area of operation from the metropolitan county of Merseyside to also include the Borough of Halton.
Tranmere is a suburb of Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. Administratively, it is within the Birkenhead and Tranmere Ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, in Merseyside. Before local government reorganisation on 1 April 1974, it was part of the County Borough of Birkenhead, within the county of Cheshire.
Liverpool James Street is a railway station located in the centre of Liverpool, England; it is situated on the Wirral Line of the Merseyrail network. James Street is an underground station, with access to the platforms via lifts from the booking hall. At certain times, the platforms are accessed via a pedestrian tunnel from the India Buildings on Water Street. As of 2013/14, James Street was the fifth-busiest station on the Merseyrail network.

The Chester–Birkenhead line runs from Chester to Birkenhead via Hooton. Today, it forms part of the Wirral Line network, a commuter rail system operated by Merseyrail. The line was built by the Chester and Birkenhead Railway and opened on 23 September 1840. On 22 July 1847 the railway merged with the Birkenhead, Lancashire and Cheshire Junction Railway which was later renamed to Birkenhead Railway.
West Kirby railway station serves the town of West Kirby in Merseyside, England. The station is the terminus of the West Kirby branch line, which is one of the two branches of the Wirral Line on the Merseyrail network. There is a central island platform between two terminus tracks and two parallel sidings for out-of-use electric multiple units. A second station, which was the terminus of a branch line from Hooton, lay to the east of the Wirral Line station; it was closed in 1962.

Hooton railway station is situated in the south of the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, England. It lies on the Wirral Line 8 miles (13 km) north of Chester and 9+1⁄2 miles (15.3 km) south west of Liverpool Lime Street on the Merseyrail network, and is the junction of the branch from the Chester line to Ellesmere Port. It serves the villages of Hooton and Willaston.

Ellesmere Port railway station is located in the town of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England. The station was an intermediate through station on the Hooton–Helsby line. Now all passenger services terminate at the station from both directions. It is both a terminus of the Wirral Line, a commuter rail system operated by Merseyrail and of Northern Trains services to Warrington Bank Quay. Departures and arrivals of Merseyrail services are on platform 1 with departures and arrivals to Warrington Bank Quay on platform 2.
Rock Ferry railway station is situated in the Rock Ferry area of Birkenhead, Merseyside, England. The station lies 4.5 miles (7 km) south west of Liverpool Lime Street on the Chester and Ellesmere Port branches of the Wirral Line of the Merseyrail network. The station has an island platform with four platforms in total and four tracks.

Birkenhead Monks Ferry railway station was a railway station in Birkenhead, Wirral, England. It was situated very close to the River Mersey named after the monks at Birkenhead Priory. For most of its life, the station was part of the Chester and Birkenhead Railway, a joint railway.
Birkenhead Dock Branch is a disused railway line running from the South junction of Rock Ferry, to the site of the former Bidston Dock on the Wirral Peninsula, England. The branch is approximately 4+1⁄2 miles (7.2 km) in length. Although called a branch, the line was accessible from both ends, from Bidston East junction and from Rock Ferry railway station. The former Mollington Street Rail Depot was branched into the line. A section of the line runs through Haymarket Tunnel and a low-level cutting through the centre of Birkenhead; visible from the road flyovers. The former Canning Street North signal box has now been demolished following fire damage, and the rails across the level crossing there have been removed due to the provision of cycle lanes on the roadway. The non-standard gates remain on the east side, but a fence has been erected on the other side despite the railway being officially out of use, rather than closed. Level crossings are also located at Duke Street and Wallasey Bridge Road. The railway lines are still partially intact.
The Birkenhead Railway was a railway company in North West England. It was incorporated as the Birkenhead, Lancashire and Cheshire Junction Railway (BL&CJR) in 1846 to build a line connecting the port of Birkenhead and the city of Chester with the manufacturing districts of Lancashire by making a junction near Warrington with the Grand Junction Railway. The BL&CJR took over the Chester and Birkenhead Railway in 1847, keeping its own name for the combined company until it shortened its name to the Birkenhead Railway in 1859. It was taken over jointly, on 1 January 1860, by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) and the Great Western Railway (GWR). It remained a joint railway until nationalisation of the railways in 1948.
