Chinese submarine tender Mount Tai was the first submarine tender of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), [1] [2] and during most of its service life, it was the largest PLANS ship. [1]
Its origin was as the cargo ship Peace No. 69 (和平69号) built by Hudong Shipyard in the era of the Great Leap Forward. PLAN tasked that shipyard to convert it to a submarine tender.
Its maiden voyage came on August 1, 1964. [1] [2] The ship formally entered service at the end of the year after five months trials. The original crew mostly consisted of sailors from retired PLANS Yan'an, [1] the ex-ROCS Yong Ji (永绩), a Yongfeng-class gunboat (PLANS Yan’an was sunk on June 19, 1965 as a target during AShM test). [3] [4]
The ship remained in the 22nd submarine squadron for its service life. The pennant number of PLANS Mt Tai originally was 329, but after October 1974, it was changed to 920. [1] [2] After nearly a quarter of century service, the ship was succeeded by Type 925 submarine support ship and retired from PLAN in April 1988. Thereafter, the ship was converted to its original cargo ship version, and moved to civilian shipping, a task it performed for more than a decade. It was scrapped in late 1990s. [1]
It was powered by a domestic 2000 horsepower 42/80 diesel engine with 500 rpm. The ship could reach a top speed of 13 kt, and cruise at 8 kt. [1] To provide electricity power to submarines, 5 generators, (2 were West German built capable of generating 500 kW each), while the remaining 3 were domestic generators capable of generating 100 kW each. [1]
Armaments included two pairs of Type 61 twin 37 mm naval guns and two pairs of Type 61 twin 25 mm guns. [1] The onboard torpedo maintenance/repair facility could store 24 torpedoes. [1]
Onboard electronic gear included navigational radar, sonar, depth sounder, range finder, Type 105 underwater communication system, electronic and magnetic compasses. The ship was equipped with more than a dozen wireless phones and various communication radio systems, which enable it to act as a command ship in addition to submarine support. [1] Furthermore, this ship also acted as target ship for submarines and as a water tanker. [1]
In addition to the 148 crew, PLANS Mount Tai had more than 430 additional beds/bunks, capable of housing two submarine crews simultaneously. [1] The ship is equipped with onboard hospital, with surgery and X-ray, in order to rotate crew at sea. [1]

The Type 062 gunboat is a class of gunboat of the People's Liberation Army Navy first developed and constructed in the 1950s. This unsophisticated class is relatively well-armed for its size and is the most widely built and exported Chinese naval vessel in terms of numbers. A total of 30 were built, initial boats being known as the Shanghai I class and later slightly improved boats being known as the Shanghai II class. The Shanghai I class was slightly smaller than its successor, the Shanghai II class, displacing 125 tons instead of 135 tons, and had a twin Chinese Type 66 57 mm gun mount forward. All other specifications are identical to the Shanghai II class, which replaced the 57 mm with twin 37 mm gun mounts. Some boats remained in active service well into the early 1990s in the PLA navy and longer in the case of the Korean People's Navy.
The Type 925 Dajiang with NATO reporting name Dajiang, or 大江 in Chinese, meaning Great River, is a type of naval auxiliary ship belonging to the People's Republic of China. Each ship is usually equipped with up to two Type 7103 DSRV class Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs). The ship is designed to replace the first People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarine tender PLANS Mount Tai, and the lead ship of the Dajiang class is the Changxingdao. The Type 925 is a submarine tender that can also be used as a submarine rescue ship, and hence, it is designated as a submarine support ship by Chinese.
Type 744 buoy tender and its derivatives with the NATO reporting name Yannan (延南) class is a class of Chinese buoy tender that is in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and Chinese civilian governmental establishments. It is a boat or vessel which services and replaces buoys.
Type 912 degaussing/deperming ship (ADG) is a type of little known auxiliary ships built in the People's Republic of China (PRC) for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and this class has several derivatives. As of 2022, Type 912 is the most numerous degaussing/deperming ship in PLAN, and the longest serving degaussing/deperming ships in PLAN, until its successor ype 911 finally begun to appear in early 2010s.
Type 904 dive tender is a class of Chinese dive tender designed the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and the late models Type 904I and Type 904II have received the NATO reporting name Yanqian,(研潜 in Chinese), meaning Research Diving. In addition to perform diving support missions, Type 904 I and II ships are also general purpose research vessels (AGE)frequently tasked to perform various scientific research works.
Type 645 oceanographic research ship is an oceanographic ship developed by China for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and other Chinese civilian establishments. Type 645 was an experimental program of the Fourth five-year plan of China and designed by the 2nd Directorate of 708th Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, which is also more commonly known as China Shipbuilding and Oceanic Engineering Design Academy (中国船舶及海洋工程设计研究)Archived 2019-07-06 at the Wayback Machine nowadays. Construction begun in October 1977 and the ship was launched in October 1978, entering service with PLAN in December 1978. There are a total of twelve laboratories on board totaling 257 square meters. Deployment proved that the design was successful, and three more units were built for civilian use, named as Xiangyanghong 9, Xiangyanghong 14 and Xiangyanghong 16 respectively. However, on May 2, 1993, Xiangyanghong 16 was rammed and sunk by a Cypriot LNG carrier more than nine time of its size in the East China Sea near Jeju Island, with the loss of three crew members. The sister ships in civilian service are often tasked with military and paramilitary missions and thus frequently come under PLAN and Chinese Coast Guard control.
Type 946 submarine rescue ship with NATO reporting name Dazhou class is a type of coastal submarine rescue ship developed by China for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). A development designated as Type 946A is also in service with PLAN.
Type 988 oceanographic surveillance ship is a type of Chinese survey vessel that is in service with both the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and Chinese civilian establishments.
Type 907A torpedo trial craft is a Chinese torpedo trial craft currently in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). After nearly three decades of service, the ship still remains active.

Type 927 acoustic surveillance ship is a type of vessel used by the People’s Liberation Army Navy. There are three known Type 927 ships, plus one predecessor Ruili No.10, which is slightly larger than Type 927 ships, and it was used to test onboard systems such as sonars for the three Type 927 ships. The first Type 927 ship was launched around June 2017 in Guangzhou. Type 927 has received NATO reporting name Dongjian class, 东监 in Chinese, meaning East Surveillance, because the West first observed it performing acoustic surveillance missions in East China Sea.
