The February 2022 North American winter storm was a widespread, damaging, and severe winter storm which affected a wide swath of much of the United States with widespread wintry precipitation; it spread from Texas northeast to Maine. [2] [3] [4] [ dead link ] Nineteen states in the U.S. were impacted by the system; more than 90 million people were in the storm's path. [5] The winter storm was named Winter Storm Landon by The Weather Channel and was also referred to by other media outlets as the Groundhog Snowstorm, primarily due to the storm impacting on Groundhog Day. The storm spread a widespread swath of heavy snowfall stretching from Texas to Maine, with anywhere from 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) falling. It also caused many disruptions as well, with over 375,000 people losing power as a result of the storm and many accidents occurring on snowy roadways as well. 7 deaths were attributed to the winter storm's impacts. Five tornadoes also occurred within the warm sector of the storm in Alabama on February 3; three of them were rated EF2.

Meteorological history

Over much of the Midwest, temperatures were unseasonably mild on February 1 as a strong cold front moved southward over the region. Rain began to fall in the early afternoon over the Central Midwest, and temperatures began to drop as the front draped southward. During the early evening, an upper-level low began to form along the front and interacted with a jet streak producing lift. As the temperatures on the backside of the front cooled and fell below freezing, the rain quickly turned to snow and thanks to the lift, made perfect conditions for lots of snow with rates receiving 1" an hour in some places. The winds also picked up to 3035mph causing many cases of blowing and drifting snow. This snow continued through the night with areas along and south of I-70 in Missouri and Indiana receiving more of a wintry mix and rain. [8]

During the night and morning of February 2, a second upper-level low began to form over Texas. Snow accumulations occurred in areas west of I-35 while areas east received freezing rain and sleet. This system also began to advance northeastward along the cold front. Meanwhile, the first system also continued northeast and by the late-morning moved out of the Western Midwest and by the afternoon moved out of the rest of the area and into the northeast. But during the night, the second system moved back over the same area as the first bringing yet another round of snow to many of the same regions while areas in Arkansas and along the Ohio River Valley received heavy freezing rain and sleet. The energy from the two systems began to merge over the northeast during the morning on Thursday, February 3. By this time the system had become so large that precipitation associated with the system was falling over nearly half of all the US states, from Texas to Maine, but with the bulk of it still over Texas and Arkansas. During the late morning this would shift to over the Ohio River Valley while snow began to become heavier in the northeast and moisture being pulled northward by the system would cause a small severe weather outbreak over Alabama. The storm continued to move northeast and by that night was over mainly the Northeast. Snow would continue through the day on Friday, February 4 before the bulk of the storm moved offshore in the early afternoon. [10] It would reach a minimum pressure of 1,004 mb (29.6 inHg) around this time as well.[ citation needed ]

Preparations

The National Weather Service issued winter storm watches from Wyoming to Maine. [11] Winter Storm Warnings were also issued from New Mexico to Maine, and at least 18 states were under winter storm warnings. [12] [13] In northeastern Ohio, and Buffalo, New York, snow amounts of more than a foot were forecasted. [14] [15] [16] Amtrak cancelled or modified the routes several trains due to the storm. [17] [18] In Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, 103 flights were cancelled and 82 were delayed. [19]

United States

Deep South

Early on February 3, a tornado watch was issued by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) for portions of Alabama and Mississippi. [20] Additional flood watches were issued for portions of Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. [21] The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) stated that crews will work on bridges and roads in response to the storm. [22] On February 1, the University of Oklahoma closed campus for February 23. [23] On February 3, the San Antonio Spurs modified their tip off time against the Miami Heat from 7:30 pm to 6 pm, due to the impacts from the winter storm. [24]

Midwest

A state of emergency was declared in Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky, as well as 50 National Guard troops being deployed in Indiana to assist stranded motorists. [25] [26] The University of Missouri moved to online classes for February 2–3. [27] Many schools closed and moved to online classes in preparation for the storm. [28] More than 3,000 flights were canceled, mainly airlines headed to Midwestern airports, and all airlines headed to St. Louis, Missouri were all canceled. [29] [30] In Michigan, buses, trains, and flights were all delayed, and some were canceled. [31] The Gateway Arch National Park closed on February 2 due to the storm. [32] Ohio State canceled classes for February 3. [33] In Allen County, Indiana (City of Fort Wayne, Indiana) a snow emergency and travel warning was put in place to keep drivers off the roads. Reports of over an inch an hour were falling at that time, and those same conditions occurred in Indianapolis and Bloomington. [34] An Indiana Hoosiers women's basketball game between the Indiana Hoosiers and Minnesota Golden Gophers at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was closed to the public. [35]

Northeast

More than 600 flights were canceled to Northeastern U.S. airports on Wednesday in preparation of the winter storm. [25] Cities including Burlington, Boston, and Providence issued snow emergencies due to the upcoming winter storm. [36] Due to forecasted amounts of 7–13 in (18–33 cm) of snow, numerous schools in Western New York closed. [37]

Impact

United States

Because of the winter storm, 5,600 flights were canceled both on February 2 and February 3. [38]

West

South of Colorado Springs, Colorado, nearly 2 feet (61 cm) of snow was reported. [39] In Wyoming, around 3 inches of snow was reported in Cheyenne, Wyoming. [40] In Utah, small amounts of snow were reported in the Salt Lake City, though little to no snow was reported in other regions of Utah, with small amounts being reported in Sandy, Provo, and Vernal. [41]

Southwest

As much as 37 inches (94 cm) of snow was reported in Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico. [42] At least 3 people were killed in New Mexico, 1 was killed in a weatherrelated pileup on I-40 in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, and 2 were killed when their car rolled 100 feet (30 m) down a mountain near Cedar Crest. An additional nonfatal tractortrailer accident closed I-25 near Santa Fe. [43] [44]

Deep South

Due to wintry conditions across Dallas, Texas, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was closed on February 3. [45] One person was killed in Dallas, when a semi-truck crashed while traveling on I-45 while traveling over I-30, an additional dog died in the crash as well. [46] With 0.2 inches (0.51 cm) of sleet in Austin, the city set a daily snowfall record for February 3. [47] Numerous state parks closed due to the winter storm in the San Antonio metropolitan area. [48] 3 inches (7.6 cm) of snow were reported in Nashville, Tennessee, as well as 2 inches (5.1 cm) in Little Rock, Arkansas and Mayfield, Kentucky. [49] Over 120,000 people lost power in Shelby County, Tennessee, and it took nearly two weeks for power to be restored. [50] [51] On I-10 near Kerrville, Texas, several semi-trucks were jackknifed, causing drivers to be stranded on the interstate for hours. [52] [53] A truck driver died on I-35 in Oklahoma after losing control on an icy part of the road. [54] A person in Oklahoma died after crashing in an ATV on a snow-covered road. [55] Ice impacts reached as far south as Corpus Christi, Texas. [42]

The warm side of the storm, in Alabama, had temperatures of nearly 70 °F (21 °C), an ingredient in forming powerful tornadoes. [56] On the morning of February 3, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued a slight risk for tornadoes for portions of Mississippi and Alabama. The storm system spawned a supercell that produced three EF2 tornadoes in Western Alabama, the second of which struck areas near Sawyerville and caused significant high-end EF2 damage. One person was killed and eight others were injured, including three seriously. Two additional tornadoes, both rated EF0, impacted Elmore County as well, resulting in minimal damage. [57] The National Weather Service issued a particularly dangerous situation on the tornado warning for Sawyerville. [58] The tornado damaged 60 homes and destroyed 20 others. [59]

Midwest

In Missouri, I-70, I-44, and I-72 were all covered with snow and ice. In Illinois, a stretch of I-55 was closed due to motor accidents reported in the area, [26] and parts of I-74 and I-57 also closed in Illinois. [60] In Lewistown, Illinois, at least 14.4 inches (36.6 cm) of snow fell. [39] Snow also resulted in the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois closing down. [61] Snow accumulated as high as 17 inches (44 cm) was reported in Columbia City, Indiana. [42] A "weather-related" fatality occurred in Tennessee on February 4. [62] There were also over 85,000 power outages in Ohio. [63] Milwaukee, Wisconsin was “blitzed” by small amounts of snow and Madison, Wisconsin was also briefly affected. [64] As far down as Kansas saw snow and ice, specifically in the Kansas City and Topeka areas. Lansing, Michigan saw its record highest snow, with 13.3 inches (34 cm). [65] More snow was dropped in Nebraska, though it got less snow than neighboring Kansas, with the most snow in Omaha with 2 inches (5.1 cm). [65]

Northeast

Large amounts of rain were reported in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Snow was reported in Albany, New York and over 17 inches (44 cm) was reported in areas of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine, specifically the areas of Burlington and Bangor. [42] New York also recorded over 50,000 power outages. [66] Around half of Ulster County lost power due to the storm. [67] In New York City, the temperature plummeted by 16 °F (9 °C) in a period of just one hour early on February 4, from 7am to 8am, as temperatures dropped from 54 °F (12 °C) to 38 °F (3 °C). [68] Hundreds of flights were delayed at both LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, although Long Island MacArthur Airport did not experience significant issues. [69] Speed restrictions of 40 mph (64 km/h) were imposed on Interstate 90 in Massachusetts due to the storm. [70]

Canada

Nova Scotia

After the winter storm exited to sea, Southern Nova Scotia saw small amounts of snow before the winter storm began moving northeast into the sea toward Greenland. [71]

Greenland and Iceland

Greenland was briefly affected by the winter storm, though no major damage was reported due to the system dissipating a few hours later. [72] Similar to Greenland, the remnants of the winter storm dropped snow in Iceland. [72]

The 2011 Groundhog Day blizzard was a powerful and historic winter storm that affected large swaths of the United States and Canada from January 31 to February 2, 2011, especially on Groundhog Day. During the initial stages of the storm, some meteorologists predicted that the system would affect over 100 million people in the United States. The storm brought cold air, heavy snowfall, blowing snow, and mixed precipitation on a path from New Mexico and northern Texas to New England and Eastern Canada. The Chicago area saw 21.2 inches (54 cm) of snow and blizzard conditions, with winds of over 60 mph (100 km/h). With such continuous winds, the blizzard continued to the north and affected Eastern and Atlantic Canada. Blizzard conditions affected many other large cities along the storm's path, including Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, El Paso, Las Cruces, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indianapolis, Dayton, Cleveland, New York City, New York's Capital District, and Boston. The 2014–15 North American winter was frigid and prolifically wintry, especially across the eastern half of North America in the months of January–March. The season began early, with many places in North America experiencing their first wintry weather during mid-November. A period of below-average temperatures affected much of the contiguous United States, and several records were broken. An early trace of snowfall was recorded in Arkansas. There were greater accumulations of snow across parts of Oklahoma as well. A quasi-permanent phenomenon referred to as the polar vortex may have been partly responsible for the cold weather. Temperatures in much of the United States dropped 15 to 35 °F below average by November 19, following a southward "dip" of the polar vortex into the eastern two-thirds of the country. The 2015–16 North American winter was not as frigid across North America and the United States as compared to the 2013–14 and 2014–15 winters. This was mainly due to a strong El Niño, which caused generally warmer-than-average conditions. However, despite the warmth, significant weather systems still occurred, including a snowstorm and flash flooding in Texas at the end of December and a large tornado outbreak at the end of February. The main event of the winter season, by far and large, was when a crippling and historic blizzard struck the Northeastern United States in late January, dumping up to 3 feet of snow in and around the metropolitan areas. Several other smaller snow events affected the Northeast as well, but for the most part the heaviest snowstorms and ice stayed out further west, such as a severe blizzard in western Texas in late December, and a major late-season snowstorm in Colorado in mid-April.

The 2017–18 North American winter saw weather patterns across North America that were very active, erratic, and protracted, especially near the end of the season, resulting in widespread snow and cold across the continent during the winter. Significant events included rare snowfall in the South, an outbreak of frigid temperatures that affected the United States during the final week of 2017 and early weeks of January, and a series of strong nor'easters that affected the Northeastern United States during the month of March. In addition, flooding also took place during the month of February in the Central United States. The 2018–19 North American winter was unusually cold within the Northern United States, with frigid temperatures being recorded within the middle of the season. Several notable events occurred, such as a rare snow in the Southeast in December, a strong cold wave and several major winter storms in the Midwest, and upper Northeast and much of Canada in late January and early February, record snowstorms in the Southwest in late February, deadly tornado outbreaks in the Southeast and a historic mid-April blizzard in the Midwest, but the most notable event of the winter was a record-breaking bomb cyclone that affected much of the Central United States and Canada in mid-March. Unlike previous winters, a developing weak El Niño was expected to influence weather patterns across North America. Overall, however, winter of 2018–19 was mild along the mid- and lower parts of the East Coast, the West Coast, and most of the southern Plains. Overall, the meteorological winter of 2018-19 became the wettest on record for the United States.

The January 2019 North American winter storm was a long-lived winter storm, forming as a large area of low pressure off the Pacific Northwest shoreline January 16, making its way to the Northeast by January 21. Its effects included heavy rain/high elevation snow and gusty winds in California, severe weather in the south, near-blizzard conditions in Upstate New York, an ice storm in New England and minor coastal flooding in the Mid-Atlantic.

The 2019–20 North American winter was unusually warm for many parts of the United States; in many areas, neutral ENSO conditions controlled the weather patterns, resulting in the sixth-warmest winter on record, and many areas in the Northeastern United States saw one of the least snowy winters in years. In fact, Baltimore and Islip saw no snow in February for the first time. Some notable events still occurred, such as a powerful blizzard that impacted the Western United States in late November, a series of cold shots in January and February, a snowstorm within the Texas Panhandle and a late-season blizzard in the High Plains.

Several other significant events occurred, including a crippling early-season ice storm in the Southern Plains, a powerful nor'easter in mid-December, another major nor'easter in early February, two major and widespread winter storms in mid-February, and a major blizzard in the Rocky Mountains in mid-March. The winter-related events were responsible for at least 358 fatalities, making it the deadliest season since 1992–93. A La Niña pattern influenced much of the winter in North America.

The February 13–17, 2021 North American winter storm was a crippling, large and major winter and ice storm that had widespread impacts across the United States, Northern Mexico, and parts of Canada from February 13 to 17, 2021. The storm, unofficially referred to as Winter Storm Uri by the Weather Channel, started out in the Pacific Northwest and quickly moved into the Southern United States, before moving on to the Midwestern and Northeastern United States a couple of days later.

The January 14–17, 2022 North American winter storm brought widespread impacts and wintry precipitation across large sections of eastern North America and parts of Canada. Forming out of a shortwave trough on January 13, it first produced a swath of snowfall extending from the High Plains to the Midwestern United States. The storm eventually pivoted east and impacted much of the Southern United States from January 15–16 before shifting north into Central Canada, the Mid-Atlantic states, and the Northeastern United States. The system, named Winter Storm Izzy by The Weather Channel, was described as a "Saskatchewan Screamer".

The 2022–23 North American winter was an unusually warm winter for the east and an unusually cold winter for the west in North America, as it occurred across the continent from late 2022 to early 2023. The winter season in North America began at the winter solstice, which occurred on December 21, 2022, and it ended at the March equinox, which occurred on March 20, 2023. The first day of meteorological winter began on December 1 and unofficially ended on February 28; winter storms may still occur outside of these limits.
