General elections are due to be held in India in April or May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. Legislative assembly elections in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim will be tentatively held simultaneously with the general election.. [2]

Electoral system

The 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha will be elected from single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting. The President of India nominates an additional of two members to the Lok Sabha from the Anglo-Indian community, if he or she believes they are under-represented. [3]

Lok Sabha Lower house of the Parliament of India

The Lok Sabha is the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament, with the upper house being the Rajya Sabha. Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by adult universal suffrage and a first-past-the-post system to represent their respective constituencies, and they hold their seats for five years or until the body is dissolved by the President on the advice of the council of ministers. The house meets in the Lok Sabha Chambers of the Sansad Bhavan in New Delhi.

A first-past-the-post electoral system is one in which voters indicate on a ballot the candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins. Notable examples include Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as most of their current or former colonies and protectorates.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is a coalition of Progressive centre-right to right-wing political parties in India. Running in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014, it was the longest election in the country's history. According to the Election Commission of India, 814.5 million people were eligible to vote, with an increase of 100 million voters since the last general election in 2009, making it the largest ever election in the world. Around 23.1 million or 2.7% of the total eligible voters were aged 18–19 years. A total of 8,251 candidates contested for the 543 Lok Sabha seats. The average election turnout over all nine phases was around 66.38%, the highest ever in the history of Indian general elections.

2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election

The election to the 17th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was held from 11 February to 8 March 2017 in 7 phases. This election saw voter turnout of 61.04% compared to 59.40% in the previous election. Bharatiya Janata Party won this election by an overwhelming three-quarter majority of 325 seats despite not projecting a chief ministerial candidate before the election. As part of its election strategy BJP contested under a collective leadership and capitalised mostly on the political clout and 'brand' of its leader, Narendra Modi. In the previous election in 2012, the Samajwadi Party had won a majority and formed government in the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav.

Elections in the Republic of India in 2018 included by-elections to the Lok Sabha, elections to the Rajya Sabha, elections to legislative assemblies of eight states and numerous other by-elections to state legislative assemblies, councils and local bodies.

2019 Odisha Legislative Assembly election

Legislative Assembly elections are due to be held in Odisha in 2019, concurrent with the Indian general election, 2019. The incumbent Biju Janata Dal headed by chief minister Naveen Patnaik, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress Party are considered to be the main contestants in the election.Four Bjd MPs joined BJP and Congress due after denied for Tickets.Many Bjp leaders after getting BJP ticket too joined Biju Janata Dal.The term of current assembly elected in 2014 will be expire on 24 May 2019.

The 2019 Indian general elections are due to be held in India between April and May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. The elections can be held at an earlier date if the Council of Ministers recommends dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha to the President of India. However, the government has publicly announced that the elections will be held according to schedule. The general election in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 18, 2019. ECI has announced that the by-election for 18 assembly constituencies will be held along with the general elections.

During the poll campaign a number of issues are expected to be of importance in the 2019 Indian general election which is scheduled to be held in seven phases from 11 April to 19 May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. The counting of votes will be conducted on 23 May, and on the same day the results will be declared.
