Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kollam is a higher secondary school under the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, situated in Kottarakkara, Kollam. Started in 1994, the school have contributed significantly to the education of the district, especially to the students from rural areas. It is one of the best schools in India.There are international level science labs and two turfs for playing.Other than that,there are many playgrounds in the Vidyalaya compound.Seven standards from VI to XII have been provided. This Central Government aided school offers free education for all the students who gets admission through its entrance test. The school is also known for its good results and elegant campus.

History

The School was started in 1994. Shri K P N Pillai was the first principal of the vidyalaya. He headed the vidyalaya from July 94 to September 1996. Followed by Mr. Eapen Luke (oct 96-June 97),Dr. Joseph Mundiyankal(June 97 to February 2006). Then the chair was taken over by Mrs. Mary P Many, and later by Mrs. Jitha K Nair the current principal. The school was shifted from temporary buildings of the ETC to permanent premises in 2003. The school once faced shut down and depromotion to B grade at 1997 and the collective effort from the principal, staff and parents survived the tension. The school had won the first place in the 12th Youth Parliament Competition, 2008-2009. [1]

Academics

The school is following CBSE for its syllabus and training schedule. The medium of teaching is English. The students also get in house training for various competitive exams.

Campus Life

Hostels

All the students have to stay boarding in the school. Entire students in the school is divided under four sections or houses namely Aravalli, Nilgiri, Sivalik and Udayagiri. [2] Girls have four hostels, one for each house.Boys are different hostels for juniors (6th, 7th and 8th) and seniors (9th to 12th). Junior boys have three dormitories now. All senior boys have one hostel each under their respective houses. Every hostel is controlled by a house master and an assistant house master, anyone of them residing in the quarter attached to the hostel.

Migration

Migration of a fraction of students in class 9 takes place every year to JNV Betul. [3] Also approximately same number of students immigrate here from that school. It aims at bringing regional harmony and bringing unity against regionalism. It also facilitates the students to get a chance to learn languages other than their own. The students have to fill in the willingness form to assure that they are ready for migration at the time of admission. The selection of students is upon willingness and if it doesnot meet the 30% of the batch in 9th class, a lot system is adopted.

National Cadet Corps

Guiding programs are carried out by NCC. Students participate in the Annual training camps and National Integration camps.

Sports and Art Meets

Annual Sports and Art Meets are conducted every year and winners of sports and games will get the opportunity to compete in the inter navodaya cluster meets. The winners will then proceed to regional, national and SGFI levels thereafter subsequently. Apart from this, cultural evenings like CCA waa celebrated which scraped from at year 2009.

Faculty

Smt. Jitha Nair is the current principal of JNV Kollam. [4] The new premises for the school were dedicated to the nation at the time of previous principal Dr. Joseph Mundiyankal. In addition to the regular topics (Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Malayalam, English and Hindi) students are trained in Music, Art, Computer Science and Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW).
