This article gives an overview of liberalism in Nicaragua . It is limited to liberal parties with substantial support, mainly proved by having had a representation in parliament. For inclusion in this scheme it is not necessary so that parties labeled themselves as a liberal party.

The liberal character of the right-wing Constitutional Liberal Party (Partido Liberal Constitucionalista, former member LI) is disputable.

Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance Political party in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance is a political coalition in Nicaragua. It was started in 2005 by Eduardo Montealegre and other members of the Constitutional Liberal Party who opposed former President of the country Arnoldo Alemán's continued control of the PLC even after he had been found guilty of misuse of public funds, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Montealegre also opposed the political alliance, commonly referred to as 'El Pacto', between Alemán as head of the PLC and Daniel Ortega, head of the Sandinist National Liberation Front.

The Independent Liberal Party is a Nicaraguan political party, which separated from Somoza's Nationalist Liberal Party (PLN) in 1944 and took part in the probably fraudulent election of 1947, won by Somoza's favored candidate. The PLI participated in the 1984 election, winning 9.6% of vote for President with its candidate Virgilio Godoy. In 1990 it was part of the National Opposition Union (UNO) - a broad alliance of Sandinista regime opponents - with Virgilio Godoy running as the vice-presidential candidate. UNO won the elections with 54% of the vote. The UNO alliance split in 1993, and in the 1996 elections the PLI, under the candidature of Virgilio Godoy, suffered its worst electoral debacle, receiving only 0.32% of the vote. It joined with Enrique Bolaños's PLC for the 2001 elections, and was part of Montealegre's Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance in the 2006 elections.

The Neoliberal Party is a Nicaraguan neoliberal right-wing political party that split from the Independent Liberal Party (PLI) in 1986. PALI received legal status on appeal in 1989. In 2006, PLIUN was part of the Constitutionalist Liberal Party electoral alliance in the 2006 general election.

Social Democratic Party (Nicaragua)

Nicaraguan Democratic Movement

The Nicaraguan Democratic Movement is a right-wing Nicaraguan political party with social democratic ideology. The MDN was formed in 1978 and re-registered in 1989. MDN was the first Contra party given legal status in Nicaragua. After receiving a small number of votes, the MDN lost its legal status in the 2004 municipal elections. After an ephemeral alliance with Alliance for the Republic (APRE), the MDN is, as of 2006, in an electoral alliance with the Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance (ALN).

The Alliance for the Republic is a centre-right liberal-conservative Nicaraguan political party founded in 2004 by dissident liberals from the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC) and the Conservative Party (PC) including Enrique Bolaños, who was President of Nicaragua at the time.

Grand Liberal Union

The Great Liberal Union (Spanish: Gran Unión Liberal is a right-wing Nicaraguan political party formed by President Bolaños and other dissidents from the Constitutionalist Liberal Party in 2004. After signing an electoral alliance with the Conservative Party, both organizations formed the Alliance for the Republic in 2005. As of 2006, the GUL joined the Constitutionalist Liberal Party alliance.

The Democratic Party, renamed in 1893 as the Liberal Party, was a Nicaraguan political party in the 19th century. The power base of the liberal Democratic Party was in the city of León; while their conservative counterparts were centered in Granada. The Democrats were opposed to the Legitimists who expelled the Democrats from the constitutional assembly in 1853, driving them underground or into exile, and promulgated a constitution of 1854.

The Nicaraguan Party of the Christian Path is a Nicaraguan political party founded in 1996 by the Assemblies of God pastor and radio evangelist Guillermo Osorno. CCN participated for the first time in the Nicaraguan general elections in 1996 where they got 4.10% of the votes and 4 seats in the National Assembly.

The Nicaraguan Resistance Party is a Nicaraguan political party founded in 1993 by the Contras, the armed opposition to the Sandinista government in the 1980s.

General elections were held in Nicaragua on 6 November 2011. The incumbent president Daniel Ortega, won a third term in this election, with a landslide victory.
