Shirani Bandaranayake was the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and the first and only woman to hold the position.

This is a list of justices of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. [1] Justices are placed in the order in which they took the judicial oath of office and thereby started their term of office. While many of the justices' positions prior to appointment are simply listed as "lawyer", many had part-time positions, such as teaching, or acted as counsel to various levels of government.

The chief justice of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is the head of the judiciary of Sri Lanka and the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Established in 1801, the chief justice is one of ten Supreme Court justices; the other nine are the puisne justices of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The post was created in 1801. The attorney general of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan government's chief legal adviser, and its primary lawyer in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The attorney general is usually a highly respected senior advocate, and is appointed by the ruling government. The current attorney general is Sanjay Rajaratnam. The president does not have any power to make orders, mandatory or otherwise, to the attorney general. He heads the Attorney General's Department which is the public prosecutor.

Sir Richard Francis Morgan was a Ceylonese lawyer, who served as the 13th Queen's Advocate of Ceylon and acting Chief Justice of Ceylon. He was the first Asian in the British Empire to receive a Knighthood and first Ceylonese to be a member of the Governor's Executive Council and was an unofficial (Burgher) member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon. He was the Crown Advocate who prosecuted famed bandit Saradiel.

Chellappah Nagalingam, KC was a leading Ceylonese judge and lawyer. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ceylon and served as acting Governor-General of Ceylon in 1954. He also served as acting Chief Justice, acting Legal Secretary and Attorney General. He was the first Ceylon Tamil to be appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. He is also considered the founder of Hindu College Colombo.

Justice Sir Harry Dias Bandaranaike was a Ceylonese barrister and judge. He was the first Sinhalese and native acting Chief Justice and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He was an Unofficial Member of Legislative Council of Ceylon.

Sir William Norris was the seventh Chief Justice of Ceylon and seventh Advocate Fiscal of Ceylon.

Henry Matthews was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon and the sixth Advocate Fiscal of Ceylon. He was appointed on 1 November 1821, succeeding Ambrose Hardinge Giffard, and held the office until 1829. He was succeeded by William Norris.

John Stark was a Scottish lawyer who became the ninth Queen's Advocate of Ceylon.

Henry Byrne was a barrister who served as a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon.

Sir John Harry Barclay Nihill, was a British lawyer and administrator who served throughout the British Empire.

Lovell Burchett Clarence was a barrister and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon from 1876 to 1888. Clarence went to the University of Cambridge and was called to the bar on 17 November 1864. Prior to serving as a Justice of the Supreme Court Clarence served as Deputy Queen's Advocate of Ceylon from 1873 to 1874 and Acting Queen's Advocate of Ceylon from 1874 to 1875 before being elevated to Second Puisne Justice on 1 February 1876 and finally Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon on 4 April 1876. Clarence was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Edward Shepherd Creasy. He was the 27th Supreme Court Justice.

John Fredrick Stoddart was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. Stoddart was the son of John Stoddart, Chief Justice of Malta.

John Godfried Hillebrand was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. He was the first Burgher to sit on the bench of the Supreme Court of Ceylon as well as the first Burgher member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon from 1825 to 1843. He was appointed, after the death of John Fredrick Stoddart, as Acting Second Puisne Justice on 23 November 1839. Hillebrand retained his Legislative Council seat while on the bench. He was the first Proctor to sit on the Sri Lankan Supreme Court. He was replaced on the bench by William Ogle Carr

Christopher Temple was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon from 1854 to 1873. Temple had served as Deputy Queen's Advocate of Ceylon and Judge of the District Court of Colombo prior to being elevated as a Puisne Justice. He was appointed Senior Puisne Justice on 1 January 1863 and acted as Chief Justice when Chief Justice Edward Shepherd Creasy went on leave on 7 September 1869.

George Lawson was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. Lawson was a co-founder of the Law Library of Colombo and it is believed he was of Jewish origin.

Sir Charles Henry Stewart was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon who served from 1867 to 1879, except while on leave during 1 January - 28 April 1871 when George Lawson acted for him. He was knighted by Queen Victoria and married Helen Margaret Mackenzie, daughter of Thomas Mackenzie, chief of the Mackenzies of Dundonnell. He was a member of Lincoln's Inn and the Thatched House Club in London. He is the great great uncle of Nalin Thomas Jay, who is also a member of Lincoln's Inn and currently CEO of Carnegie Stewart in Hong Kong.

George Henry Withers was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon who served from 1 January 1893 to 1900. Withers had acted as Puisne Justice From 6 July 1892 to 1 January 1893.

Frederick Charles Moncrieff was a British colonial judge.
