The Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, also known simply as the Ateneo de Cagayan, Xavier or XU is a private, Catholic, coeducational, basic and higher education institution. It is operated by the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. Founded in 1933 as the Ateneo de Cagayan, it became the first higher education institution in Mindanao to receive a university status a year before its sister school Ateneo de Manila. It was given its present name in honor of the Jesuit missionary St. Francis Xavier.
Northern Mindanao is an administrative region in the Philippines, designated as Region X. It comprises five provinces: Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, and Lanao del Norte, and two cities classified as highly urbanized, all occupying the north-central part of Mindanao island, and the island-province of Camiguin. Beta Sigma Omega Phi is a service fraternity and sorority founded at University of Bohol on October 10, 1968. This was organized by Frank Paz Jr., Frederick Loor, and Remy Galbizo. Their aims were to foster lifetime brotherhood and sisterhood and to build noble leaders and better citizens. Members are encouraged to promote the welfare of students and to work for better and greater involvement in the affairs of the school as well as in the community. In mid-January 2017, several parts of Visayas and Mindanao experienced flooding as a result of a low-pressure area, combined with the tail-end of a cold front.
SM CDO Downtown is a shopping mall located along Claro M. Recto Avenue corner Osmeña Street, Cagayan de Oro, in the city's central business district. It is owned and operated by SM Prime Holdings, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, and opened on May 12, 2017. The mall is the 2nd in Northern Mindanao and 61st mall in the Philippines by the SM Group. It was the 3rd SM Supermall to be called "Premier" after SM Lanang in 2012 and SM Aura in 2013 respectively. It has a leasable area of 81,133 m2 and a gross floor area of 177,743 m2, making it the largest SM Supermall in Mindanao.
Robinsons Iligan, is a shopping mall located along Macapagal Avenue in Iligan. It is owned and operated by Robinsons Land Corporation, one of the largest mall operators in the Philippines. The mall opened on July 26, 2017. The mall is the first Robinsons Mall in the province of Lanao del Norte, and the 45th in the Philippines. It is also the first stand-alone Robinsons Mall in Northern Mindanao prior to Robinsons Cagayan de Oro that is located inside Limketkai Center. It has a gross leasable area of 33,190 m2 and a gross floor area of 50,483 m2.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Northern Mindanao is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus reached Northern Mindanao on March 11, 2020, when the first case of the disease was confirmed in Cagayan de Oro.
