Fixed Ferris wheels are usually intended for permanent installation, as opposed to transportable wheels which are designed to be operated at multiple locations. Occasionally however, fixed wheels are also sometimes dismantled and relocated. Larger examples include the original Ferris Wheel, which operated at two sites in Chicago, Illinois, and a third in St. Louis, Missouri; Technocosmos/Technostar, which moved to Expoland, Osaka, after Expo '85, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, for which it was built, ended; and Cosmo Clock 21, which added 5 metres (16ft) onto its original 107.5-metre (353ft) height when erected for the second time at Minato Mirai 21, Yokohama, in 1999.
Transportable Ferris wheels are designed to be operated at multiple locations, as opposed to fixed wheels which are usually intended for permanent installation. Small transportable designs may be permanently mounted on trailers, and can be moved intact. Larger transportable wheels are designed to be repeatedly dismantled and rebuilt, some using water ballast instead of the permanent foundations of their fixed counterparts.

Inspired by Wonder Wheel at Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, Coney Island, which also features both sliding and fixed gondolas, Pixar Pal-A-Round has a large pie-eyed Mickey Mouse face at its center.
Kolkata Eye was the proposed name for a giant Ferris wheel which it was hoped would be constructed in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was announced in 2011, and in May 2014 Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, stated "[it] is expected to be ready in a year's time", but it was never built.

It was opened 10 March 2014 by Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, and opened to the public two days later.
La Grande roue de Montréal is a Ferris wheel built at the Old Port of Montreal, Quebec, Canada for the festivities for the 375th anniversary of the city. Open to the public since 1 September 2017, it is the tallest Ferris wheel in Canada. It is owned by Sandibe Global BV.
The Sun of Moscow is a panoramic wheel in VDNKh park, Moscow, Russia. It was constructed in 2022 as a replacement for previously dismantled Moscow-850. At 140 m high minus the height of the elevated platform, it became the tallest Ferris wheel in Russia and in Europe, surpassing London Eye in raw height, while still smaller in diameter. The wheel opened on the City Day 11 September 2022, when Moscow's 875th anniversary was celebrated.
