It is a rectangular, two story structure built of ransom ashlar block with central pavilions projecting on its north and south elevations. The main facade features a central pavilion with a tower rising above the roofline and terminating in a corbeled and crenellated parapet. It was designed by noted Syracuse architect Horatio Nelson White.

It consists of a 3 1⁄2-story administration building with an attached 2-story drill shed all constructed of sandstone, lying on a rusticated battered stone foundation. The building features 4- to 6-story towers surrounding the administration building, and a 6 1⁄2-story square tower at the center entrance. It is home to the 74th Regiment of the New York National Guard.

It originally featured an octagonal domed cupola, but that was removed in 1906. It was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department under Alfred B. Mullett. In 2009, the United States Congress enacted legislation renaming the building the Frederic Remington Post Office Building, in honor of painter Frederic Remington, who spent his formative childhood years in that city.

Lisbon was first served with a station in the 1850s by the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad. The current building was built in 1930 as the second reconstruction of a railway depot at Lisbon by the Rutland Railway. It is a one-story, frame building, measuring 23 feet by 68 feet with a hipped roof and wide overhanging eaves. It closed as a depot in 1961 and is now the town museum.

It was occupied from 1886-1896 by the 33rd Separate Company then vacated in 1896 and converted for use as a school and a Grange hall. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 as Walton Grange #1454-Former Armory.
