Papua New Guinean art refers to visual art created in Papua New Guinea or by Papua New Guinean artists. Papua New Guinea has been inhabited by humans for roughly 50,000 years; throughout that period, the hundreds of distinct ethnic groups of the island developed unique artistics traditions and styles. Statues and figurines, ritual masks, carvings, and weavings, all generally with spiritual and religious significance, comprise a majority of the art created historically in Papua New Guinea. In the late 20th century, a contemporary art movement emerged roughly the same time as the country gained its independence in the 1970s. This movement reflected both the nation's tribal traditions and customs as well as its progression towards modernization.

History

Before European contact

Humans are believed to have first inhabited the highlands of the island of New Guinea, which would later become part of the country of Papua New Guinea, around 50,000 years ago. [1] Many of the villages that eventually developed on the island had little contact with one another due to impassable terrain, causing them to diverge culturally, as evidenced by the ethnic and linguistic diversity present throughout Papua New Guinea. [2] Alongside this cultural divergence, distinct and unique artistic styles and traditions emerged among the different groups. [3]

Much of the art created during this early period had a religious or spiritual significance, and were likely used in tribal rituals; humans and animals such as birds and echidnas were often subjects. [4] [5] For example, in New Ireland, complex sculptures depicting humans, fish, and birds in a totemic arrangement were, and continue to be, fabricated for malagan ceremonies, which are an intricate series of rituals commemorating death, among other symbolic ideas. [6] Additionally, uli figures are wooden statues carved and painted to resemble deceased ancestors in mortuary ceremonies. [7]

The people of Papua New Guinea utilized many different mediums for their art, including stone, [4] wood, fibers, pigments, and seashells. [6] Their creations often took the form of masks, statues, figurines, carvings and weavings. [5] [8] Some peoples even created ceremonial houses, shields, instruments, and overmodelled skulls. [5]

European contact and colonization

European sailors first made contact with the peoples of Papua New Guinea, as well as many other islands in Oceania, as early as the 16th century. New Guinea was colonized and divided between the German Empire and the Great Britain by 1884; Australia would later take control of the nation of Papua New Guinea in 1921 following World War I. [9] During the Papua New Guinea's period of colonization in the 19th and 20th centuries, European collectors frequently exported art pieces from the colony abroad to England and Australia. This practice was so commonplace that it led to common artistic objects virtually vanishing from local villages. The Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery was later opened in 1977 to combat this phenomenon. [10] Despite the removal of many artifacts, the actual indigenous methods of art themselves survived and continued to be practiced by natives, somewhat unaffected by the European colonization of the islands. [5]

Independence and contemporary movement

Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia on 16 September 1975. [9] Alongside its newly gained status as an independent nation, a contemporary art movement developed simultaneously in reaction to the drastic changes occurring in the country at the time. [11] Early figures of this movement such as Matthias Kauage and Timothy Akis were major influences in the movement when it began in the 1960s and 1970s. These early members of the movement were themselves influenced by Western artists who had come to reside and teach in Papua New Guinea. Other noteworthy artists of this period included Joe Nalo, Larry Santana, and Jakupa Ako. [12] These artists' work became so important to the fledgling nation's rapidly modernizing culture that they became nearly ubiquitous, even appearing on stamps and the exterior of National Parliament House in Port Moresby. [13]

A major theme of the movement is the combination of artists' indigenous cultures with a Papua New Guinea's recently-attained statehood, modernization, and worldwide technological advance. [11] [14] This era was of great importance to the country, and the dramatic changes occurring in the country at the time socially and politically were commonly reflected in the works of artists of the time. [13] Other themes, such as the AIDS pandemic, which reached Papua New Guinea in the late 1980s, were also portrayed by these artists. [11] Paintings, generally featuring indigenous motifs combined with bright, bold colors and lines, became a major medium of art during this period. However, other traditional methods, such as statues, weavings, decorative shields, and pottery continued to be produced. [13]

In addition to the contemporary movement, there has also been an effort to repatriate historical pieces that were taken abroad during the country's colonial period. [15] A large amount of artwork created in Papua New Guinea still remains in museums in the United States, France, and Germany, among other countries. The first Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare, once requested the return of cultural artifacts to the country, referring to them as "living spirits with fixed abodes," [16] expressing their spiritual significance to Papua New Guineans. In 2020, the National Gallery of Australia transferred 225 artifacts, including masks and sculptures, to the Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery. [15]

Uli figures are wooden statues from New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. Like their neighbors to the north and south, the artistic traditions of the peoples of central New Ireland formerly focused largely around mortuary rites. In contrast to the intricate malagan carvings of the north, artists in central New Ireland produced less ornate but more permanent figures known as uli, which were kept and reused many times. No longer made today, uli were displayed as part of lengthy fertility rites involving the exhumation and reburial of human skulls, which accompanied the planting of sacred plants.

The culture of Papua New Guinea is complex and multifaceted. It is estimated that more than 7000 different cultural groups exist in Papua New Guinea, and most groups have their own language. Because of this diversity, in which they take pride, many different styles of cultural expression have emerged; each group has created its own expressive forms in art, dance, weaponry, costumes, singing, music, architecture and much more. To unify the nation, the language Tok Pisin, once called Neo-Melanesian has evolved as the lingua franca — the medium through which diverse language groups are able to communicate with one another in Parliament, in the news media, and elsewhere. People typically live in villages or dispersed hamlets which rely on the subsistence farming of yams and taro. The principal livestock in traditional Papua New Guinea is the oceanic pig.

Oceanic art or Oceanian art comprises the creative works made by the native people of the Pacific Islands and Australia, including areas as far apart as Hawaii and Easter Island. Specifically it comprises the works of the two groups of people who settled the area, though during two different periods. They would in time however, come to interact and together reach even more remote islands. The area is often broken down into four separate regions: Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia and Australia. Australia, along with interior Melanesia (Papua), are populated by descendants of the first waves of human migrations into the region by Australo-Melanesians. Micronesia, Island Melanesia, and Polynesia, on the other hand, are descendants of later Austronesian voyagers who intermixed with native Australo-Melanesians; mostly via the Neolithic Lapita culture. All of the regions in later times would be greatly affected by western influence and colonization. In more recent times, the people of Oceania have found a greater appreciation of their region's artistic heritage.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Modern Greek art</span>

Modern Greek art is art from the period between the emergence of the new independent Greek state and the 20th century. As Mainland Greece was under Ottoman rule for all four centuries, it was not a part of the Renaissance and artistic movements that followed in Western Europe. However, Greek islands such as Crete, and the Ionian islands in particular were for large periods under Venetian or other European powers' rule and thus were able to better assimilate the radical artistic changes that were occurring in Europe during the 14th-18th century.

New Ireland, or Latangai, is a large island in Papua New Guinea, approximately 7,404 km2 (2,859 sq mi) in area with c. 120,000 people. It is named after the island of Ireland. It is the largest island of New Ireland Province, lying northeast of the island of New Britain. Both islands are part of the Bismarck Archipelago, named after Otto von Bismarck, and they are separated by Saint George's Channel.

Mathias Kauage O.B.E. was a Papua New Guinean artist. In 1998, Kauage was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services to the arts by Queen Elizabeth II. The National Gallery of Australia has described him as "Papua New Guinea's best-known contemporary artist". He was still holding regular exhibitions abroad shortly before his death, in Australia, Europe and Africa.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">York Art Gallery</span> Public art gallery in England

York Art Gallery is a public art gallery in York, England, with a collection of paintings from 14th-century to contemporary, prints, watercolours, drawings, and ceramics. Timothy Akis, born around 1944 in Tsembaga village, Simbai Valley, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, died in 1984, was a Papua New Guinean artist. His art consisted primarily in imaginative pen and ink drawings and batiks inspired by his country's wildlife.

Contemporary Indigenous Australian art is the modern art work produced by Indigenous Australians, that is, Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people. It is generally regarded as beginning in 1971 with a painting movement that started at Papunya, northwest of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, involving Aboriginal artists such as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, and facilitated by white Australian teacher and art worker Geoffrey Bardon. The movement spawned widespread interest across rural and remote Aboriginal Australia in creating art, while contemporary Indigenous art of a different nature also emerged in urban centres; together they have become central to Australian art. Indigenous art centres have fostered the emergence of the contemporary art movement, and as of 2010 were estimated to represent over 5000 artists, mostly in Australia's north and west.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kulap</span> Traditional funerary sculptures of New Ireland

Kulap figurines of limestone or chalk were made in Melanesia. The small funerary sculptures from New Ireland were associated with death rituals. They are typical in the hilly Punam region of the New Ireland province in Papua New Guinea of the Bismarck Archipelago. They were believed to contain the soul of the deceased person whom they were meant to represent, and would be ritually smashed once their usefulness or the period of mourning was over. In more recent years, some have been sold in their intact forms to Westerners, particularly to German administrators.

The Dishman Art Museum is an art museum on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Admission to the museum is completely free; the gallery is open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. The museum also serves as a teaching facility in the Art Department at Lamar University. Exhibitions change monthly. The gallery features one-person exhibition of contemporary artists, group exhibitions of contemporary artists, Art Department faculty shows, graduating senior shows, a national competition, artist-in-residency, Grand Bal, and High School Scholarship exhibitions. There are three gallery spaces - Upper Gallery, Lower Gallery, and the Heinz and Ruth Eisenstadt Collection which consists of 150 19th-century paintings and 250 porcelains and objets d'art. The exhibition space totals 6,000 square feet (560 m2).

Joe Nalo is an artist from Papua New Guinea. Nalo is a painter, printmaker, art teacher and curator. He was the first curator for contemporary art at the National Museum and Art Gallery of Papua New Guinea. Nalo has been described in the journal Pacific Arts as "one of the best contemporary artists" in Papua New Guinea.
