History

With the D16 and D17 class locomotives becoming life expired, between 1948 and 1952, twelve DD17s were built at North Ipswich Railway Workshops. Per Queensland Railway's classification system they were designated the DD17 class, D representing they were a tank locomotive, and the 17 the cylinder diameter in inches. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The first tank engine was painted black with red lining. The next five tanks were painted blue and the last six engines midway blue. They operated suburban passenger trains in Brisbane out of Mayne depot, mostly on the northside. They also operated freight trains in the off-peaks. [1] [2] [3]

Zig Zag Railway

The Zig Zag Railway is an Australian heritage railway, situated near the town of Lithgow in the state of New South Wales. The line climbs the western flank of the Blue Mountains, using railway zig zags to gain height. It was opened by the not for profit Zig Zag Railway Co-op. Ltd. as an unpaid volunteer staffed heritage railway in October 1975, using the alignment of the Lithgow Zig Zag line that formed part of the Main Western line between 1869 and 1910.

Mary Valley Rattler heritage railway in Australia

The Mary Valley Rattler, is a heritage railway line that conducted steam train trips and tours from Gympie through the Mary Valley in the Gympie Region, Queensland, Australia. It is now one of the region's biggest tourist attractions and is managed by a not-for-profit organisation. It has been described as Australia's third biggest heritage railway. It was shut down for safety reasons in 2012; in 2016 the Gympie Regional Council provide funding to make the railway operational again as it is a major tourist attraction for the area. Journeys recommenced between Gympie and Amamoor on 6 October 2018.

Victorian Railways K class class of 53 Australian 2-8-0 locomotives

The K class was a branch line steam locomotive that ran on Victorian Railways in Australia from 1922 to 1979. Although its design was entirely conventional and its specifications unremarkable, the K class was in practice a remarkably versatile and dependable locomotive. It went on to outlast every other class of steam locomotive in regular service on the VR, and no fewer than 21 examples of the 53 originally built have survived into preservation.

WAGR Dd class class of 10 Australian 4-6-4T locomotives

The WAGR Dd class was a class of 4-6-4T tank locomotive operated by the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) between 1946 and 1972.

The South Australian Railways 400 class was a class of 4-8-2+2-8-4 articulated steam locomotives built in France in 1952 and 1953 under licence to Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd, Manchester, UK. The locomotives mainly hauled ore on the 3 ft 6 in narrow gauge line from the SA/NSW border to smelters at Port Pirie until 1963, when they were replaced by diesel locomotives. They also operated on the lines to Terowie and Quorn. Some locomotives were returned to service in 1969 while narrow gauge diesel locomotives were converted to 4 ft 8 1⁄2 instandard gauge. Subsequently some were stored at Peterborough before being scrapped.

Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway Railway museum

The Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway is located near Ipswich, Queensland, Australia and running through the former West Moreton pioneering coal fields. First opened in 1881 by colliery proprietor and politician Lewis Thomas (1832-1913) as a tramway to his coal mines. The right-of way later taken over extended to take in over 20 mines before reaching to its present termini at Swanbank Loop by Queensland Railways where it served the Swanbank Power Stations. The branch remains the oldest continuously operating branchline in Queensland. Since 1978 Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway has operated passenger trains on this branch line using heritage rollingstock.
