The Richmond Railroad Station Historic District is a group of historic commercial buildings and national historic district located at Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana.
The district encompasses 22 contributing buildings the icon of which is the Daniel Burnham-designed Pennsylvania Railroad Station, completed in 1902. It developed between about 1853 and 1915 and includes representative examples of Italianate, Classical Revival, and Chicago School style architecture. In addition to the Pennsylvania Railroad Station, other notable buildings include the Miller Brothers Block (1890), Jacob H. Lichtenfels Building (1890), Charles Sudhoff Building (1893), Benjamin Starr Building (1896), William H. Alford Building (1905), John Roberts Building (1877), R.F.D. Hose House No. 1 (1890), James Shaw Building (1875), and Richmond / Atlas Underwear Building (1910). [3]
The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and is also a local conservation district designated by the City of Richmond's Historic Preservation Commission. [2]
It hosted trains on north–south and east–west trajectories through eastern Indiana:
A previous station at this same location was also a stop on the procession of Abraham Lincoln's funeral train. Indiana Governor, Oliver P. Morton, boarded the train at this stop, and rode it to Indianapolis, where a procession and showing were held.[ citation needed ]

It is the principal city of the Richmond micropolitan area. Situated largely within Wayne Township, its area includes a non-contiguous portion in nearby Boston Township, where Richmond Municipal Airport is located.

The Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, also known as the Big Four Railroad and commonly abbreviated CCC&StL, was a railroad company in the Midwestern United States. It operated in affiliation with the New York Central system.
Central Station was an intercity passenger terminal in downtown Chicago, Illinois, at the southern end of Grant Park near Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue. Owned by the Illinois Central Railroad, it also served other companies via trackage rights. It opened in 1893, replacing Great Central Station, and closed in 1972 when Amtrak rerouted services to Union Station. The station building was demolished in 1974. It is now the site of a redevelopment called Central Station, Chicago.
The Union Station of Louisville, Kentucky is a historic railroad station that serves as offices for the Transit Authority of River City (TARC), as it has since mid-April 1980 after receiving a year-long restoration costing approximately $2 million. It was one of at least five union stations in Kentucky, amongst others located in Lexington, Covington, Paducah and Owensboro. It was one of three stations serving Louisville, the others being Central Station and Southern Railway Station. It superseded previous, smaller, railroad depots located in Louisville, most notably one located at Tenth and Maple in 1868–1869, and another L&N station built in 1858. The station was formally opened on September 7, 1891, by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. There was a claim made at the time that it was the largest railroad station in the Southern United States, covering forty acres. The other major station in Louisville was Central Station, serving the Baltimore and Ohio, the Illinois Central and other railroads.
The Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, commonly called the Pan Handle Route, was a railroad that was part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system. Its common name came from its main line, which began at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, crossed the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, and continued west to Bradford, Ohio, where it split into a northern line to Chicago and a southern one through Indianapolis, Indiana, to East St. Louis, Illinois.

In addition to its east end in downtown Pittsburgh, where it met the Main Line and Pittsburgh to Chicago Main Line, junctions included the Columbus to Chicago Main Line at Columbus, the C&X Branch at Xenia, the Columbus to Indianapolis Main Line via Bradford at New Paris, the Richmond Branch and Fort Wayne Branch at Richmond, the Louisville Branch and I&F Branch at Indianapolis, and the Peoria Branch at Farrington, Illinois.
The Cincinnati, Richmond & Muncie Depot is a restored train station in Muncie, Indiana, United States. Built in 1901, it was acquired by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1910. The station was used for passenger train service throughout the 20th century and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It is currently used as a visitor center and office for the adjacent Cardinal Greenway.
The James Whitcomb Riley was a passenger train that operated between Chicago, Illinois, and Cincinnati, Ohio, via Indianapolis, Indiana. Originally operated by the New York Central Railroad, it was taken over by Amtrak in 1971. Under Amtrak, it merged with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway's George Washington to become a Chicago-Washington/Newport News train. In 1977, it was renamed the Cardinal, which remains in operation.
Lima station is a historic former train station in Lima, Ohio, United States. Built for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1887, it is a brick Queen Anne structure that rests on a sandstone foundation. The Lima station is located on the former Pennsylvania Railroad's mainline between New York City and Chicago. Lima station was formerly served by the Pennsylvania Railroad's Pennsylvania Limited and by its flagship Broadway Limited daily passenger trains between New York City and Chicago in its later years.
The Indianapolis Union Railway Company, is a terminal railroad operating in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was organized on May 31, 1850, as the Union Track Railway Company by the presidents of the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad (M&I), the Terre Haute and Richmond Railroad (TH&R), and the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad (I&B) for the purposes of establishing and operating joint terminal facilities in Indiana's capital city. The name of the company was changed to its present one on August 12, 1853. The next month, on September 20, Indianapolis Union Station opened its doors, becoming the first union railroad station in the world. Since 1999, the company has been owned and operated by CSX.
The Vandalia Railroad Company was incorporated January 1, 1905, by a merger of several lines in Indiana and Illinois that formed a 471-mile railroad consisting of lines mostly west of Indianapolis.
The Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Fort Wayne, Indiana, also known as Baker Street Station, is a former passenger rail station in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. The American Craftsman-style station opened to the public March 23, 1914, at a cost of $550,000.
Muncie Union Station was a passenger railroad station in Muncie, Indiana at 630 South High Street. As a union station, in earlier decades it served the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway and the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. Made of limestone, it was built in 1883 in the Romanesque Revival style, for the CCC & St. L. Other stations in Muncie served the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, the Muncie Street Railway and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The Big Four Depot of Galion, Ohio was a passenger train station serving the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, commonly known as the 'Big Four Depot,' and the New York Central Railroad. The brick and wood-constructed building, still intact, is located at 127 Washington Street at Harding Way. It was one of two railroad stations in the city, the other serving the Erie Railroad.
Delaware Big Four Depot was completed in 1887 by the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway (CCC&I). The brick structure is in Delaware, Ohio, on the east side of the Olentangy River, and opposite side of the river from Ohio Wesleyan University. The building was a successor to an earlier frame structure built in the 1850s.
