San Antonio Shopping Center is an outdoor shopping center located on El Camino Real and San Antonio Road in Mountain View, California, United States, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The shopping center consists of two areas, owned by two separate companies.

History

Starting in the 1950s, the center was an open-air shopping mall, originally featuring Rhodes and Sears, with a Mervyn's opening later. Over time, the mall was expanded, with the Rhodes converting to Liberty House and J.C. Penney and a Best catalog showroom added. In the 1970s and 1980s, Atari Games (located nearby) used the Time Zone arcade at the shopping mall to play test all their arcade games. Most of the mall was demolished and partially reconfigured circa 1995 [2] to make way for Walmart and additional retail shops.

Sears closed its doors in 2010, three years after it had originally announced its departure. [3] Sears and the surrounding strip of retailers were replaced by phase one of The Village, consisting of a Safeway supermarket, apartments, retail, and restaurants. [4] A second phase, anchored by a Showplace ICON cinema, broke ground in 2015. [5]

In 2019, 9.65 acres (3.91 ha) of the shopping center was sold to the Los Altos School district to build a new school intended to be closer to nearby students than Covington Elementary School. There were also plans to designate the land as a new site for the Bullis Charter School, which had 2 campuses with portable units serving as classrooms, housed at the district's two junior high schools, Egan Junior High School and Georgina P. Blach Intermediate School. The original plan was to have the school open by 2023, but the COVID-19 pandemic has since delayed those plans. [6] [7] In 2020, JOANN Fabrics, T-Mobile, GameStop, and Luu Noodle permanently closed in preparation for construction; however, the buildings housing the former businesses currently sit vacant. In 2022, the 24 Hour Fitness located at 550 Showers Drive was temporary closed for upgrades. It reopened in November of that year and the location at 2535 California Street permanently closed, consolidating operations to its Showers Drive location. Kohl's is set to close sometime in 2023 and demolition is set for summer 2025. The new school is set to open for the 2027–2028 school year.

Midland Commons is an outdoor power center in Warwick, Rhode Island. It previously existed as a two-story, enclosed shopping mall. The property opened as the Midland Mall in October 1967; for several years, it co-existed with the nearby Warwick Mall that opened in 1970. The mall was renamed the Rhode Island Mall in March 1985, and experienced rapid decline as tenants relocated to the Warwick Mall in the 1990s. It was considered a dead mall by the 2000s, and the interior of the mall was closed permanently in April 2011. The property was sold in 2012 and has been under redevelopment into its current configuration as a power center since 2016.

Parkway Plaza is a shopping mall in El Cajon, California. The mall's anchor stores are Crunch Fitness, Dick's Sporting Goods, Ashley HomeStore, Bob's Discount Furniture, Burlington, Extra Space Storage, Walmart, Regal Cinemas, and JCPenney.

South Sound Center is a shopping mall located in Lacey, Washington. Its major stores include Target and Kohl's. The mall is not enclosed, but before major re-development in 2001, the centerpiece of the shopping center was a 500,000-square-foot (46,000 m2) enclosed mall.

Staunton Mall was a shopping mall in Augusta County, Virginia, United States. It was slightly outside the city limits of Staunton, Virginia. Opened in 1968 as Staunton Plaza, it originally featured J. C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, Woolworth, and Safeway as its major stores. An expansion plan between 1985 and 1987 enclosed the formerly open-air property while adding Leggett as a third department store and renaming the property to Staunton Mall. The mall underwent a number of anchor store changes throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s: Safeway became an outlet store for Sears, then Goody's and Gold's Gym, while Woolworth was converted to Stone & Thomas and then to Peebles, and Montgomery Ward became Steve & Barry's.
