Tanah Merah Airport (Indonesian : Bandar Udara Tanah Merah) ( IATA : TMH, ICAO : WAKT) is one of the airports serving the Boven Digoel Regency, in the Indonesian province of South Papua. It is located in the regency's capital of Tanahmerah.

The airport served 2,200 passengers throughout 2016. [2] It has serviced flights with the provincial capital at Jayapura (Sentani International Airport) and Merauke (Mopah International Airport) to the south. [3] Both routes are serviced by Trigana Air. [4]

The airport was briefly closed during the eruption of the Manam in Papua New Guinea in 2015. [5]

Incidents

In 2008, a Pelita Air de Havilland Dash 7 was mired in the apron, although it was not damaged and was soon returned to service. [6] An XpressAir Dornier 328 with 33 passengers ran off the side of the runway on 14 June 2009, with the aircraft substantially damaged although there were no casualties. [7] [8]

Xpress Air was a domestic regular airline that offered direct flights to the eastern parts of Indonesia, with its first flight in 2005, and from 2014 international routes to Malaysia. Beginning with two Boeing 737s, Xpress Air was the first privately owned, scheduled airline to connect Jakarta to 24 domestic destinations like Makassar, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari and Jayapura. Makassar was a main hub for all flights coming from Java to the eastern cities of Indonesia, while Sorong was a second hub in Papua, connecting remote places surrounding the West Papua area. Trigana Air Flight 267 was a scheduled passenger flight from Sentani to Oksibil in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua. On 16 August 2015, the ATR 42 turboprop operating the service crashed on approach in the Bintang highlands region of Oksibil, killing all 49 passengers and 5 crew members.

Oksibil Airport is an airport located at Oksibil, Highland Papua, Indonesia. The airport has connecting flights to Jayapura with Trigana Air Service and Wings Air. The airport's runway is 1,350 metres (4,430 ft) long and is partially marked asphalt landing strip. The runway can handle Turboprop STOL aircraft but is able to handle larger Turboprop Regional airliner. There are few buildings that acts as a terminal structure as well as a small tower in the tarmac area beside the runway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2016 Alfa Indonesia DHC-4 crash</span>

On 31 October 2016, a modified DHC-4 Caribou transport aircraft operated by Alfa Indonesia crashed in the Papuan jungle while en route to Ilaga Airport in Ilaga, Indonesia. The flight was operated by Alfa Indonesia as a chartered cargo flight with four people on board. There were no survivors among the four crew members on board.

Stevanus Rumbewas Airport is an airport serving the town of Serui and the nearby towns and islands in the Yapen Islands Regency, Papua, Indonesia. The airport commenced operation on 19 December 2014, replacing the old Sudjarwo Tjondronegoro Airport which has been closed due to the lack of land for expansion to cope with the increasing passenger demands. The airport is named after Stevanus Rumbewas, a former Indonesian Navy officer who originated from Serui.

Since 7 January 2023, separatist West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) has begun to launch attacks each few days at Oksibil, the seat of Bintang Mountains Regency, Highland Papua. According to the Regional Police of Papua, Bintang Mountains is one of 7 regencies that are vulnerable to separatist attacks.
