Type 0105 gunboat was a type of gunboat developed by China for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in the late 1950s. [1] [2]

In 1958, PLAN demanded the need of more powerful gunboats and ordered the design to be carried out by individual fleets/bases. The new gunboats must have greater displacement, endurance/range, and firepower than the 75 ton gunboat in service. PLAN No. 4810 Factory of Lushunkou base completed design of Type 0105 gunboat and a total of three went into the service. [1] [2]

In 1960, China decided to produce Soviet M-1 gas turbine engine. Harbin Marine Steam and Turbine Research Institute, or more commonly known as the 703rd Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) was tasked with design and later reverse engineering after Sino-Soviet split, with Wen Xue-You (闻雪友) as the general designer of the gas turbine. [3] The reverse engineered Soviet M-1 gas turbine was given the Chinese designation Type 404, and the manufacturing of this Chinese version was assigned to Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant (上海汽轮机厂, STP), the predecessor and subsidiary of Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group (上海电气集团股份有限公司, SEPG). [2] [3] STP had never produced any gas turbines before, but nonetheless completed the first sample by 1960, and test begun the following year. [2] [3] Due to the political turmoil in China at the time, namely, the Great Leap Forward, the program was plagued with problems, and it took several years to correct the problems, and it was not until three years later in the beginning of 1964 when the prototype finally meet all design parameters originally specified. [2] [3] In March 1964, the first Type 404 was authorized to be installed on a Type 0105 boat for sea trials. [2] [3]

A Type 0105 with hull number 595 was selected to be redesigned to incorporate Type 404 gas turbine engine, and the general designer for the boat redesign was Chen Xie-Wen (陈协文), with Li Meng-Xuan (李荫轩) as the general designer of the propulsion system. [2] [3] The construction of the gas turbine powered boat was assigned to Jiangnan Shipyard, and the boat was handed to PLAN in 1967. [2] [3] Due to the significant weight change, original weaponry had to be adjusted and additional measure had to be taken into consideration for stability. The first stage of sea trials was plagued with problems, starting with the gas turbine engine could not start, so air inlet had to be redesigned. [3] A much more serious problem was that some of the components broke apart and damaged the engine, which could only be taken out at Jiangnan Shipyard, so the boat had to be towed back to the shipyard for repair. [3] As a result, the aluminum alloy used to make these components was replaced by steel, and frame that supports the components was also redesigned. In addition, manufacturing technique was also modified, with arc welding replaced the original spot welding. [3]

Although the gas turbine engine itself encountered numerous difficulties in the first stage of the sea trials, other subsystems of the boat were successful, such as the redesigned main gun system developed by the 713rd Research Institute of CSIC, and the stabilization system developed by the 704th Research Institute of CSIC. [3] After half a decade redesign and rework, the second stage of the sea trials begun with the new Type 404 gas turbine engine October 1969. [3] Extensive trials were conducted, including sea trials from Shanghai to Dalian and Qingdao, as well as riverine trials in inland waterway from Shanghai to Wuhan in the Yangtze River. [3] In November 1970, the sea trial concluded and the boat formally reentered service with PLAN in 1971. [2] [3] However, due to the political turmoil in China at the time, namely, Cultural Revolution, logistic and technical support could not keep up with the demand of the gas turbine engine, and the boat was retired as a combatant in 1977, [2] and subsequently converted to a dispatch boat numbered Dong-Jiao (东交) 61, and served until mid-1980s until its final retirement from PLAN. The China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) was one of the two largest shipbuilding conglomerates in China, the other was the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). It was formed by the Government of the People's Republic of China on 1 July 1999 from companies spun off from CSSC, and is 100% owned by State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of State Council. Headquartered in Beijing, the CSIC handles shipbuilding activities in the north and the west of China, while the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) deals with those in the east and the south of the country.

Type 062 gunboat Class of patrol boats

The Type 062 gunboat is a class of gunboat of the People's Liberation Army Navy first developed and constructed in the 1950s. This unsophisticated class is relatively well-armed for its size and is the most widely built and exported Chinese naval vessel in terms of numbers. A total of 30 were built, initial boats being known as the Shanghai I class and later slightly improved boats being known as the Shanghai II class. The Shanghai I class was slightly smaller than its successor, the Shanghai II class, displacing 125 tons instead of 135 tons, and had a twin Chinese Type 66 57 mm gun mount forward. All other specifications are identical to the Shanghai II class, which replaced the 57 mm with twin 37 mm gun mounts. Some boats remained in active service well into the early 1990s in the PLA navy and longer in the case of the Korean People's Navy.

Type 037 corvette

The Type 037 corvette is a series 400–500 ton corvette type classes in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy. Unlike western navies, the People's Liberation Army Navy does not have dedicated patrol boats in its inventory. Instead, a large variety of corvette type classes, in the form of missile boats and submarine chasers fulfill the tasks of patrolling China's territorial waters. The Egyptian Navy operates eight vessels.

The Type 072II landing ship are large landing ships built by Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard as a successor to the Type 072 landing ship. A total of four hulls have been delivered to the People's Liberation Army Navy since the early 1990s. The Type 072II is the PLA Navy's first amphibious warfare ship to have a flight deck for helicopter take-off/landing. There are three ships currently in People's Liberation Army service, all of which are deployed in East Sea Fleet of the PLA Navy. All active ships are built by China Shipbuilding Shipyard (中华造船厂) in Shanghai.

The Type 072III landing ship is the follow-on of the Type 072II landing ships initially introduced in the 1990s by the People's Republic of China. Type 072-III features a redesigned concealed bridge, and possibly enhanced sealift capability. The main difference between Type 072III and its predecessor Type 072II is that Type 072III incorporates a helicopter platform at stern. A total of eleven ships have entered service with People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and all of them were built by China Shipbuilding Shipyard (中华造船厂) in Shanghai. 6 Type 072III are deployed in PLAN South Sea Fleet (SSF), and the remaining are deployed in PLAN East Sea Fleet (ESF).

Jinsha II-class LCAC

The Type 722 II class LCAC with NATO reporting name Jinsha II class LCAC is a medium size air-cushioned landing craft (hovercraft) operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy of China. It is frequently but erroneously referred by many as Dagu class, its predecessor, due to misspelling and lack of information in the 1970s, when these projects first appeared. There are also other names for this class, mostly resulting from different transliterations.
