    (457175) 2008 GO98, provisional designation 2008 GO98 with cometary number 362P, is a Jupiter family comet in a quasi-Hilda orbit within the outermost regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 8 April 2008, by astronomers of the Spacewatch program at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. [1] This presumably carbonaceous body has a diameter of approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) and rotation period of 10.7 hours. [4]

    Orbit and classification

    2008 GO98 is classified as a member of the dynamical Hilda group, [4] as well as a Jupiter family that shows clear cometary activity, [6] [5] which has also been described as a "quasi-Hilda comet". [3] Orbital backward integration suggests that it might have been a centaur or trans-Neptunian object that ended its dynamical evolution as a quasi-Hilda comet. [3] It may have reached the belt during the last few hundred years. [7]

    It orbits the Sun in the outer asteroid belt at a distance of 2.9–5.1  AU once every 7 years and 11 months (2,883 days; semi-major axis of 3.96 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.28 and an inclination of 16° with respect to the ecliptic. [2] The body's observation arc begins with a precovery taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in October 2001, more than 5 years prior to its official discovery observation by Spacewatch. [1]

    Although 2008 GO98 orbits in the asteroid belt, it has a Jupiter Tisserand's parameter (TJ) of 2.926, [2] just below Jewitt's threshold of 3, which serves as a distinction between the main-belt asteroids (TJ larger than 3) and the Jupiter-family comets (TJ between 2 and 3). [8]

    Numbering and naming

    This minor planet was numbered by the Minor Planet Center on 16 February 2016 ( M.P.C. 98587). [9] As of 2020, it has not been named. [1]

    Physical characteristics

    2008 GO98 is an assumed C-type asteroid. [4]

    Rotation period

    In August 2017, a rotational lightcurve of 2008 GO98 was obtained from photometric observations by American astronomer Brian Warner at the Palmer Divide Station ( U82 ) in California. Lightcurve analysis gave a rotation period of 10.74±0.01 hours with a small brightness amplitude of 0.12 magnitude ( U=2 ). [4] [lower-alpha 1]

    Diameter and albedo

    The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes a standard albedo for a carbonaceous body of 0.057 and calculates a diameter of 14.64 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 12.9. [4] Other estimates, taking into account several published magnitude measurements and a large range of albedo assumptions, estimate a diameter range of 5.5 to 24.7 kilometers. [5]

    965 Angelica, is a large background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 60 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 November 1921, by astronomer Johannes F. Hartmann at the La Plata Astronomical Observatory in Argentina. The dark X-type asteroid (Xc) with a low TJupiter has a rotation period of 26.8 hours and is likely spherical in shape. It was named after the discoverer's wife, Angelica Hartmann.

    3596 Meriones is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 80 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 14 November 1985, by Danish astronomers Poul Jensen and Karl Augustesen at the Brorfelde Observatory near Holbæk, Denmark. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 12.96 hours. It was named after the Cretan leader Meriones from Greek mythology.

    1268 Libya, provisional designation 1930 HJ, is a dark Hildian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 95 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 29 April 1930, by South African astronomer Cyril Jackson at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, South Africa. The asteroid was named for the country Libya.

    3290 Azabu, provisional designation 1973 SZ1, is a dynamical Hildian asteroid from the outermost regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 10–20 kilometers (6–10 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 19 September 1973, by Dutch astronomers Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten at Leiden, and Tom Gehrels the Palomar Observatory. The asteroid has a rotation period of 7.67 hours. It was named after the former city district of Tokyo, Azabu.

    151997 Bauhinia, provisional designation 2004 JL1, is a sub-kilometer background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 900 meters in diameter. It was discovered on 11 May 2004, by Canadian astronomer William Yeung at the Desert Eagle Observatory, Arizona, United States.     7604 Kridsadaporn, provisional designation 1995 QY2, is an unusual, carbonaceous asteroid and Mars-crosser on a highly eccentric orbit from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 31 August 1995, by Australian astronomer Robert McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran, Australia. Due to its particular orbit, the C-type asteroid belongs to MPC's list of "other" unusual objects, and has been classified as an "asteroid in cometary orbit", or ACO. The asteroid was named in memory of Thai astronomer Kridsadaporn Ritsmitchai.

    (323137) 2003 BM80, provisional designation: 2003 BM80 and cometary designation 282P/2003 BM80, is an asteroid and main-belt comet from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 31 January 2003, by astronomers of the LONEOS program conducted at Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States.

    <span class="nowrap">P/2019 LD<sub>2</sub></span> (ATLAS) Jupiter family comet

    P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) is a Jupiter-family comet discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System on 10 June 2019. It was initially reported as the first known Jupiter trojan asteroid to display cometary activity, but its classification as a Jupiter trojan was retracted after closer examination and a longer observation arc revealed its orbit to be unstable like a typical Jupiter family comet and implied that its position near the trojans is temporary.

    (523676) 2013 UL10 (prov. designation:2013 UL10) is a reddish centaur with cometary activity orbiting the Sun between Jupiter and Uranus. It was discovered on 18 August 2010, by a team of astronomers with the Pan-STARRS survey at the Haleakalā Observatory, Hawaii. It is the first centaur known to have both comet-like activity and red surface colors. It is also one of the smallest centaurs, with a nucleus of no more than 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in diameter. As of 2021, it has not been named.
