Aepophilus [1] is a monotypic genus of bugs, containing the species Aepophilus bonnairei in the monotypic subfamily Aepophilinae in the monotypic family Aepophilidae of the infraorder Leptopodomorpha. It is found on the Atlantic coast of Europe.

Distribution

The species lives on the coasts of Ireland, southwest England and Wales, the Netherlands, the North of France's Atlantic and Channel coasts, the Atlantic coasts of Spain and Portugal, with an uncertain record from Morocco. [2]

Ecology

Aepophilus bonnairei lives exclusively in the intertidal zone of the sea coast, often in between thalli of Fucus . It is small (length 2.5-3.5 mm) and found in cracks and crevices of rocky coasts as well as under stones embedded in sand or silt. This insect is a predator and has been observed feeding on annelids, with its sucking mouthparts, in the field and in the laboratory. The life cycle of the species has been poorly researched. Larval stages were kept in the laboratory for several months, so it probably has a relatively slow development. There are reports that the females guard egg clutches. [3]

These small insects are also called shore bugs, or spiny shore bugs. As their name suggests, shore bugs range from being intertidal, to living near streams and lakes. Four families belong to this infraorder, the largest of which is Saldidae with about 350 species, compared to about 30 in Leptopodidae, and only 5 and 1 in Omaniidae and Aepophilidae respectively. <i>Mormidea lugens</i> Species of true bug

Mormidea lugens is a species of stink bug in the family Pentatomidae found in the Caribbean, Central America, and Eastern North America. In Illinois, adults have been observed emerging from overwintering sites in late April, and continue to be observed until early November, and appear to be bivoltine in this area. Eggs are approximately 0.7 millimetres (0.028 in) in diameter, pale yellow, and laid in small clusters of 6 to 11 eggs. Adults are bronze in color, with a white-yellow border around the scutellum, and are 5.0–7.2 millimetres (0.20–0.28 in) in length. In laboratory conditions, at approximately 24 °C (75 °F), development from eggs to adults has been documented to take between 39 and 50 days, and appears to be affected by the species of host plant. Mormidea lugens has been documented to feed on timothy, sedges, as well as deer-tongue grass, and Bosc's panic-grass. It has been collected from pale sedge and wide-leaved spiderwort but has not observed feeding on these species, and deer-tongue grass appears to be an insufficient food source for development.
