Springs is a neighbourhood in the narrow centre part of the locality ( 16°52′00″S145°40′00″E / 16.8666°S 145.6666°E / -16.8666; 145.6666 (Springs) ). [3]

Geography

Almost the entire area of the locality is undeveloped land within the Barron Gorge National Park which also extends into a number of neighbouring localities. The land rises from approximately 10 metres above sea level to the east of the locality up to a number of named peaks, including: [4]

The name of the locality derives from the gorge created by the Barron River through the Macalister Range and the Lamb Range. [9] [10]

The Cairns-to-Kuranda railway line provides the north-western boundary of the locality and also part of the south-eastern locality. The railway line is used by the Kuranda Scenic Railway tourist service which includes stops at scenic lookouts. [10] There were two railway stations on this line within the locality:

There is only one road through the locality, the Barron Gorge Road, which starts in Carvonica and Kamerunga and provides access to the Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Station. [10]

Attractions

The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway passes through the locality with Red Peak Station ( 16°50′57″S145°40′10″E / 16.8493°S 145.6695°E / -16.8493; 145.6695 (Red Peak Station) ), [13] [14] a stopping point within the locality which features guided boardwalk tours through ancient tropical rainforests, featuring a 400-year-old Kauri pine tree. There is no entry to the cableway from the locality; its terminals are in Smithfield and Kuranda. [15]

Barron River (Queensland)

Kuranda Scenic Railway

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is the name for the railway line that runs from the coastal city of Cairns, Queensland, Australia, over the Great Dividing Range to the town of Kuranda on the Atherton Tableland. The tourist railway snakes its way up through the Macalister Range on the Cairns-to-Kuranda railway line which is no longer used for regular commuter services, but instead operates as a tourist service, operating every day of the year, except Christmas Day. It passes through the suburbs of Stratford, Freshwater and Redlynch before reaching Kuranda. The line is used for some freight services and other passenger services, such as The Savannahlander.

Kuranda Range road

The Kuranda Range road is an informally named section of the Kennedy Highway in Queensland, Australia. The road traverses the Macalister Range near Cairns. The 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) section of road connects Smithfield, a suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region with Kuranda, a town in the Shire of Mareeba on the Atherton Tableland, at an altitude of about 360 metres (1,180 ft). Traffic is primarily limited to one lane each way, with overtaking lanes at various points. The Kuranda Skyrail cableway crosses the road twice. Henry Ross Lookout is located near the road's highest point, at an altitude of 430 metres (1,410 ft), and is named after the foreman in charge of building the road to cross the range in 1939.

The Tablelands railway line is a railway line in North Queensland, Australia. It was opened in a series of sections between 1887 and 1916. It commences at Cairns and at its maximum extent, reached Ravenshoe at the southern end of the Atherton Tableland. Cairns-to-Kuranda railway line

The Cairns-to-Kuranda Railway is a heritage-listed railway line from the Cairns Region to the Shire of Mareeba, both in Queensland, Australia. It commences at Redlynch, a suburb of Cairns and travels up the Great Dividing Range to Kuranda within the Shire of Mareeba on the Atherton Tableland. It was built from 1913 to 1915 by Queensland Railways. Components of it include Stoney Creek Bridge, the Rail Bridge over Christmas Creek, Kuranda railway station, and Surprise Creek Rail Bridge. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992. The railway is used to operate a tourist rail service, the Kuranda Scenic Railway. It forms part of the Tablelands railway line.
