The Brong-Ahafo Region was a Region located in southern Ghana. Brong-Ahafo was bordered to the north by the Black Volta river and to the east by the Lake Volta, and to the south by the Ashanti, Eastern and Western regions. The capital of Brong-Ahafo is Sunyani. Brong-Ahafo was created on 14 April 1959 from the then Western Ashanti and named after the dominant and native inhabitants, Akans, Brong and Ahafo. [3] In 2019, as a result of the 2018 Ghanaian new regions referendum, the region was divided into three, namely Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, and ceased to exist. [4]
Brong Ahafo is known for its large cocoa production and agriculture agribusiness industries.[ citation needed ] Brong-Ahafo contains many Akan cultural and wildlife attractions, but it is less known to tourists than the Ashanti or Central region. Attractions of Brong-Ahafo include Kintampo, with its waterfalls (Kintampo waterfalls) and nature reserves; Fiema, one of the communities which is home to the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary (a short distance outside Sunyani); national parks, Bui National Park and Digya National Park.
Paul Yeboah is the founder of the Ghana Permaculture Institute. The Ghana Permaculture Institute is a non-profit organization in Techiman (Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana). The purpose of the Institute is to train communities how to build and maintain stable food systems using Permaculture sustainable practices that restore, take care of local ecosystems, and to improve quality of life in rural and urban areas. [5]
Universities in the area include the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG), Anglican University of Technology (AnguTech), College of Science, Arts and Education (CSAE) and Sunyani Technical University.[ citation needed ]
The region is renowned for producing a lot of elite athletes. Asamoah Gyan, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and John Paintsil are just a few of the numerous prominent sports personalities the region has produced. Currently, the region houses three of the 16 teams in the Ghana premier league. Aduana Stars F.C. is the traditional team of the Dormaa Traditional Area and it is based in Dormaa Ahenkro. They were promoted into the league for the first time in 2009 and emerged champions of the Ghana premier league that same year. In 2010 the premier league was won by Berekum Chelsea F.C., a club which is based in Berekum. Aduana Stars won the 2017 Ghanaian Premier League. [6] Bechem United F.C. is the third Ghana Premier League team from the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Techiman is a town and is the capital of Techiman Municipal and Bono East Region of Ghana. Techiman is a leading market town in South Ghana. Techiman is one of the two major cities and settlements of Bono East region. Techiman has a settlement population of 104,212 people in 2013. Techiman is located at a historical crossroads of trade routes and the Tano River, and serves as capital of the Techiman Municipal District.
Sampa is a town in the Bono Region of Ghana, on the border with Côte d'Ivoire. It is the capital of Jaman North Municipal, and was formerly the site of a Slave market. It was also the capital of the Akan State of Gyaaman in the late 15th century. It is the biggest border town in Ghana with a population of over 36,000. It is the principal town of the Nafana ethnic group. They speak the Nafaanra language. They equally speak Twi because Sampa is a cosmopolitan society. Nafaanra is also spoken in Banda District, parts of Tain District and Bondoukou District of Cote d'Ivoire. The major cash crop produced by the people is Cashew. It is the leading producer of Cashew in Ghana.
Sunyani is a city and the capital town of the Bono Region and the Sunyani Municipal of Ghana. Sunyani had a population of 74,240 at the 2010 population and housing census. The city consists mainly of the Bonos by tribe.

Kintampo waterfalls is one of the highest waterfalls in Bono East of Ghana. Also known as Sanders Falls during the colonial days, it is located on the Pumpum river, a tributary of the Black Volta, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of Kintampo municipality, on the Kumasi–Tamale road. This waterfall, one of the main natural attractions in the area, is hidden in the forest and it is formed by 3 main drops where the longest drop measures 25 metres (82 ft) in height, and, after a number of steps and cascades, the river falls about 70 metres (230 ft).

St. Ambrose College of Education is a teacher education college in Dormaa Akwamu. The college is located in Ashanti / Brong Ahafo zone. It is one of the about 40 public colleges of education in Ghana. The college participated in the DFID-funded T-TEL programme. It was established in November 2009 by the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani and officially commissioned in January 2011. In the 2016–2017 academic year it became a Public College of Education. It is affiliated to the University of Cape Coast.

The Bono East Region of Ghana is a new region carved out of the existing Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. The capital of the new region is Techiman. This creation of this new region was in fulfillment of a promise made by the New Patriotic Party prior to the 2016 Ghana general election. Upon winning the elections, the President, Nana Akuffo Addo created the Ministry of Regional Reorganization to oversee policy formulation and implementation. In all six new regions are to be created from the existing ten regions of Ghana. The other regions are Bono,Western North, Ahafo, Savannah, North East, and Oti regions.
