Sunnyside Gardens is a community within Sunnyside, a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. The area was the first development in the United States patterned after the ideas of the garden city movement initiated in England in the first decades of the twentieth century by Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin, specifically Hampstead Garden Suburb and Letchworth Garden City.
Lafayette Park is a historic urban renewal district east of Downtown Detroit and contains the largest collection of residential buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The northern section planned and partially built by Mies is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2015 it was designated a National Historic Landmark District. Lafayette Park is located on the city's lower east side directly south of the Eastern Market Historic District. In general, the neighborhood, including portions developed by other architects, has been regarded as an incubator of progressive architecture and one of the few historically stable urban renewal zones in the United States.
Henry Wright, was a planner, architect, and major proponent of the garden city, an idea characterized by green belts and created by Sir Ebenezer Howard.
Village Green, originally named Baldwin Hills Village, is a neighborhood at the foot of Baldwin Hills, within the city of Los Angeles, California. Village Green consists of a large condominium complex that is both a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and a National Historic Landmark. Designed in the late 1930s and built out by 1942, it is one of the oldest planned communities of its type in the nation. Village Green was named by The American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important architectural achievements in U.S. history.
Mihran Mesrobian was an Armenian-American architect whose career spanned over fifty years and in several countries. Having received an education in the Academy of Fine Arts in Constantinople, Mesrobian began his career as an architect in Smyrna and in Constantinople. While in Constantinople, Mesrobian served as the palace architect to the last Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed V.
Ednor Gardens-Lakeside is a large community in northeast Baltimore, Maryland. It is bounded by 33rd Street to the south, Hillen Road to the east, Ellerslie Avenue to the west, and Argonne Drive, The Alameda, Loch Raven Boulevard, and Roundhill Road to the north. Ednor Gardens was part of a large planned community that was built out from the 1920s through the 1950s by Edward Gallagher, one of Baltimore's most prolific homebuilders at the time. It is notable among its neighbors for the quality of the homes and extensive landscaping. Until it was torn down in 2002, Memorial Stadium was located in Ednor Gardens-Lakeside.
The Cass Park Historic District is a historic district in Midtown Detroit, Michigan, consisting of 25 buildings along the streets of Temple, Ledyard, and 2nd, surrounding Cass Park. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and designated a city of Detroit historic district in 2016.
There are 73 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Albany, New York, United States. Six are additionally designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), the most of any city in the state after New York City. Another 14 are historic districts, for which 20 of the listings are also contributing properties. Two properties, both buildings, that had been listed in the past but have since been demolished have been delisted; one building that is also no longer extant remains listed.
The Maplewood Historic District is located in Rochester in Monroe County, New York. The district is distinguished as having landscape designs, including Maplewood Park, originally laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted.
Columbia Avenue Historic District is located in the central part of the city of Davenport, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The district lies north and west of Vander Veer Park. The area is entirely residential and it contains brick apartment buildings that were built between 1930 and 1939. It is one of the city's smallest districts and it is unique among the other historic districts in that it contains primarily apartment buildings.
Kensington Gardens Apartment Complex is a historic apartment complex located at Buffalo in Erie County, New York. It was built in 1941–1942 and is a multi-unit apartment complex containing a total of 280, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments in a variety of detached and semi-attached buildings in the Colonial Revival style. The 59 contributing buildings are grouped around grassed courts. There are 10 court areas created on the site and three building types within courts. It is an example of a World War II-era worker housing community built with financing by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).
Norton Village Historic District is a national historic district located in the northeast quadrant of Rochester in Monroe County, New York. The district consists of 144 contributing buildings. The garden apartment complex was originally built in 1949 as part of the Rochester Plan to provide quality, low-rent housing for veterans returning from World War II and their families. There are 144 two-story garden-style apartment buildings with a total of 288 two-story apartments, or two per building, with the buildings grouped in four main clusters. The buildings are in a vernacular Colonial Revival style. It is one of three complexes built as part of the Rochester Plan; the others are Fernwood Park and Ramona Park.
Ramona Park Historic District is a national historic district located in the northwest quadrant of Rochester in Monroe County, New York. The district consists of 40 contributing buildings. The garden apartment complex was originally built in 1947 as part of the Rochester Plan to provide quality, low rent housing for veterans returning from World War II and their families. There are 34 two story garden style apartment buildings and two groups of garage units. There are a total of 136 apartments, or four per building, with the buildings grouped in 10 clusters. The buildings are in a vernacular Colonial Revival style. It is one of three complexes built as part of the Rochester Plan; the others are Fernwood Park and Norton Village.
Linden–South Historic District is a national historic district located in the South Wedge neighborhood of Rochester in Monroe County, New York. The district consists of 136 contributing buildings, including 82 residential buildings, 53 outbuildings, and one church. The houses were constructed between 1872 and 1913 in a variety of vernacular interpretations of popular architectural styles including Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival styles. The houses are 2 1/2-stories, are of frame or brick construction, and were designed by local architects employed by the developer Ellwanger & Barry. Among the more prominent are Andrew Jackson Warner and Claude Bragdon. The church is the former South Avenue Baptist Church, now Holy Spirit Greek Orthodox Church, built in 1909–1910 in a Late Gothic Revival style. Also in the district is a three-story, Queen Anne style mixed use building, with commercial space on the first floor and residential units above, located at 785 South Avenue.
The Caverns Historic District comprises the central developed area of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The complex was built between the early 1920s and 1942, initially in Pueblo Revival style, and later in New Mexico Territorial Revival style in the area around the natural entrance to Carlsbad Caverns. The earlier structures are built of local limestone, the later buildings in adobe. Thirteen buildings in the district are considered contributing structures. Buildings built between 1940 and 1942 were constructed with labor provided by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The Lewis and Clark County Hospital Historic District is a historic district in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana. It has also been known as "Cooney Convalescent Home", "Miner's Hospital", "Poor Farm", and "Old Cooney Home". There are seven buildings and a garden on the property; four buildings and the garden are part of the historic district: the hospital, detention hospital, shed, superintendent's residence, and garden. The non-contributing buildings are the modern garage, concrete garage, and ambulance garage.
The Walter Reed Gardens Historic District, also known as Commons of Arlington, is a national historic district located in Arlington County, Virginia. It contains 18 contributing buildings in a residential neighborhood in South Arlington. The two- and three-story, brick garden apartment complex was built in 1948, in the Colonial Revival style. It was converted to condominiums in 1982–1984, and has 134 units, include 56 one bedroom units and 78 two-bedroom units in four clusters of buildings.
Colonial Village is a historic garden apartment complex located at Arlington County, Virginia, United States. It contains 226 contributing buildings built in four stages between 1935 and 1940. The buildings hold approximately 1,055 apartments. The brick Colonial Revival-style buildings are situated around courtyards with clusters of five and seven buildings to larger groupings of up to thirteen. Colonial Village was the first Federal Housing Administration-insured, large-scale, rental housing project erected in the United States. The complex has been converted to condominiums split into three phases and two apartment complexes: Colonial Village Apartments and Colonial Village West.
Grosvenor Gardens Apartments is a historic apartment complex located at Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. The three buildings were built in 1935, and are three-story, Colonial Revival style brick buildings arranged in a “U” shape plan around an open landscaped courtyard. It is a pedimented gable-roofed structure with symmetrically arranged three- and five bay units, three of which feature two-story convex porticos facing the center courtyard. There are 58 efficiency units, one basement apartment with one bedroom, one two-bedroom apartment, one three-bedroom apartment, and a laundry room in the complex.
South Wedge Historic District is a national historic district and neighborhood located in southeast Rochester, Monroe County, New York. The district encompasses 434 contributing buildings in a predominantly residential section of Rochester. The district includes a variety of residential buildings built primarily between the 1840s and 1920s, and consists mainly of two-story detached houses built as single-family or two-family residences. The architecture is primarily vernacular with a few examples of high-style Italianate and Queen Anne style residences. Located in the district are the separately listed Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church and Nazareth House. Other notable buildings include the St. Boniface Church complex, the former School 13, the former School 28, and former Engine Company No. 8.
