Capital punishment is a legal penalty in South Korea. As of December 2012, there were at least 60 people on death row in South Korea. The method of execution is hanging.
On 26 January 2018, a fire at the Sejong Hospital in the South Korean city of Miryang killed 41 people and injured 153. It was South Korea's deadliest fire in nearly a decade. The fire occurred one month after 29 people died in a gym fire in the city of Jecheon. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Kyoto Animation arson attack occurred at Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building in the Fushimi ward of Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, on the morning of 18 July 2019. The arson killed 36 people, injured an additional 34, and destroyed most of the materials and computers in Studio 1. It is one of the deadliest massacres in Japan since the end of World War II, the deadliest building fire in Japan since the 2001 Myojo 56 building fire, and the first massacre ever to have occurred at a studio associated with an entertainment company, and the animation industry.
A major fire occurred on 29 April 2020 at a construction site in Icheon, South Korea, killing 39 people and injuring another 10. Blood samples taken from 23 victims indicate most had died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Autopsies have been completed on 15 of the 39 people killed, as recommended by South Korea authorities, but has angered victims' families. All killed workers were irregular or subcontract workers.

On 9 June 2022, a fire caused by a suspected arson attack broke out at an office building in Daegu, South Korea, killing seven people and injuring 49 others. Among the dead was the suspected arsonist, who was reported to have started the fire in a lawyer's office.
