The 'Mallika' mango is the result of the hybridization of the Indian mango varieties Neelum and Dasheri. [1] The variety was introduced by Dr. Ramnath Singh. When grafted, the tree will remain a manageable size and is appropriate for dooryard growing. Fruit is normally ready to harvest from June to July. [2]

Fruit

Mallika produces high quality, fiberless Mango fruit. The fruit has prominent citrus, melon and honey notes and is exceptionally sweet. The cultivar met a positive reception at the Fairchild Botanic Gardens International Mango Festival. [2] Mallika are usually grown in tropical to subtropical climates. However, if grown in colder temperatures, the Malika has a higher chance of showing signs of a disease called malformation. Malformation is most prevalent in species of mango that are grown between a range of temperatures of 10-15 degrees Celsius. However, the sign of the disease is not as prevalent in temperatures that are higher than 15 degrees Celsius. The reason for the malformation in the Mallika species is due to the cold temperature causing the mango to produce higher than normal levels of ethylene, which is a chemical produced when the mango exhibits either abiotic or biotic stresses. [3]

After the initial day of harvest, the Mallika changes in physical attributes and chemical structure. Three days after harvesting the Mallika mangos, the color of the skin becomes a reddish yellowish hue. This is due to an increase in the number of carotenoids present within the skin while the chlorophylls start to degrade. The mango is also the most acidic and has the firmest texture on the third day after harvest, but the level of acidity and firmness decreases drastically afterwards. The mango becomes the heaviest on the fifth day after harvest but the size of the mango becomes the smallest by the seventh day after harvest. [4]

Oidium mangiferae is a plant pathogen that infects mango trees causing powdery mildew. Powdery mildew of mango is an Ascomycete pathogen of the Erysiphales family that was initially described by Berthet in 1914, using samples collected from Brazil. O. mangiferae is found in all areas where mangoes have been raised long term, but is particularly widespread in India where both the host and the pathogen are native. Currently no teleomorph stage has been identified, but due to certain morphological characteristics it has been suggested that O. mangiferae belongs in the Erysiphe polygony group. Mango is the only known host for this pathogen, though O. mangiferae appears to be identical to fungi responsible for powdery mildew diseases on various other plant species, particularly oak, though some differences may be observed. O. mangiferae has been known to infect oak leaves in the laboratory, however due to the lack of a known teleomorph stage O. mangiferae is still considered to only be a pathogen of mango. Recent analysis of its ribosomal DNA suggests it is conspecific with Erysiphe alphitoides, the causative agent of powdery mildew in European oaks.

Leucostoma canker is a fungal disease that can kill stone fruit. The disease is caused by the plant pathogens Leucostoma persoonii and Leucostoma cinctum (teleomorph) and Cytospora leucostoma and Cytospora cincta (anamorphs). The disease can have a variety of signs and symptoms depending on the part of the tree infected. One of the most lethal symptoms of the disease are the Leucostoma cankers. The severity of the Leucostoma cankers is dependent on the part of the plant infected. The fungus infects through injured, dying or dead tissues of the trees. Disease management can consist of cultural management practices such as pruning, late season fertilizers or chemical management through measures such as insect control. Leucostoma canker of stone fruit can cause significant economic losses due to reduced fruit production or disease management practices. It is one of the most important diseases of stone fruit tree all over the world.
