Mysore division, officially Mysuru division, is an administrative division in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It is one of four administrative divisions in Karnataka, the others being Bangalore division, Belagavi division, and Kalaburagi division. [1] Mysore division comprises eight districts of Karnataka, namely, Chamarajanagar, Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore and Udupi district. [2] The city of Mysore is the administrative headquarters of the division. Mysore division covers parts of historical Old Mysore region and southern part of Coastal Karnataka.The total area of the division is 43,503 sq.km. [3] The total population as of 2011 census is 12,563,598. [4]

Administration

A Regional Commissioner, is head of every administrative division. G. C. Prakash (IAS), is the regional commissioner of Mysore division. [5] The role of the regional commissioner includes maintaining staff and human resources for revenue department, maintaining revenue records, inspection of subordinate offices, natural disaster and drought relief, release grants to District offices, Sub-divisions and Taluk offices, preparation of Annual Budget, periodic review of government programs and more. [6] High View building in Vinoba Road, Mysore houses the office of the regional commissioner. [7] The division consists of 8 districts covering 55 taluks with more taluks to be formed, as of 2020. [8]

Mysore is the largest city in the region followed by Mangalore. [9]

Regions

The Mysore division can be divided into 3 unofficial regions. The districts of Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Hassan and Chikmagalur are part of Old Mysore region, districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are part of Tulu language speaking Coastal Karnataka region and Kodagu district was part of the erstwhile Part-C state of Coorg. Part of the region falls under the Malnad area of Karnataka while the other part falls under the Kaveri river basin. [10] [11]

Economy

Mysore and Mangalore are the major economic hubs of the region. Tourism and IT is the major industry in Mysore. The city attracted about 3.15 million tourists in 2010. [12] Mysore has traditionally been home to industries such as weaving, sandalwood carving, bronze work and the production of lime and salt. [13] It has many other big IT Companies the city like Infosys and Wipro.Nanjangud industrial area hosts a number of industries like AT&S India Pvt Ltd, Nestle India ltd, Reid and Taylor, Jubiliant, TVS, Asian Paints. Nanjangud Industrial area also boasts being 2nd highest VAT / Sales Taxpayer which is more than 4 billion (US$50 million) after Peenya which is in state capital Bangalore. JK Tyre has its manufacturing facility in Mysore. [14] The New Mangalore Port is India's seventh-largest container port. [15] It handles 75 per cent of India's coffee exports and the bulk of its cashew nuts. [16] Mangalore's major chemical industries include BASF, [17] Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF), Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL), [18] Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), [19] Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), [20] Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), [21] Total Oil India Limited [22] and Hindustan Unilever. [23] Other important economic hubs include Mandya and Hassan.

Transport

Road

The division of Mysore contains some important national highways passing through it such as National Highway 275 which includes Bangalore-Mysore Expressway which is under construction., [24] National Highway 766 (India), National Highway 150A (India), National Highway 73 (India) and National Highway 66 (India) are some major National Highways passing through the division. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) provides bus transport for the region. [25]

Railway

Majority of the division is under Mysore railway division of South Western Railway zone. The parts of Coastal Karnataka comes under Konkan Railway zone. Major railway stations are Mysore Junction, Mangalore Junction, Mangalore Central, Arsikere Junction, Hassan Junction, Kadur Junction, Birur Junction, Mandya, Chamrajnagar, and Chikkamagaluru. [26]

Air

Mangalore International Airport is the only international airport located in the division. Mysore Airport is another major domestic airport. Hassan Airport is under construction. [27]

Sea

New Mangalore Port is the main and only port of the division.

Karnataka is one of the highest economic growth states in India with an expected GSDP growth of 9.5% in the 2021–22 fiscal year. The total expected GSDP of Karnataka in 2022–2023 is about $240 billion. Karnataka recorded the highest growth rates in terms of GDP and per capita GDP in the last decade compared to other states. In 2008–09, the tertiary sector contributed the most to GSDP, followed by the secondary sector, and the primary sector.

Karnataka, a state in South India has a well-developed transport system. Its capital city, Bengaluru is well-connected by air to domestic and international destinations and the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in the city is one of the busiest airports in India. It was also the headquarters of the airlines Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines. The road transport is also well developed in the state with many National and State highways providing means for fast transportation. The headquarters of the South-Western Railway division of Indian Railways is located at Hubballi and this division governs most of the railway network in the state. Konkan Railway which passes along the coastal region of the state is considered one of the toughest engineering projects being undertaken in India till date. Buses, cars and trains are the means of transport for moving across distant places in Karnataka. For transportation within the city or town limits; motorbikes, cars, autorickshaws and buses are used. With the advent of low-cost airlines, many people are choosing to travel via air as well.

Mangalore's location in the Indian state of Karnataka makes it accessible by all forms of transport: road, rail, air and sea. It is the largest city in the Coastal Karnataka region, and is the only city in Karnataka and one among the six cities in India to have an International Airport, a Major Seaport, railway & road connectivities. It is the second prominent city of Karnataka after the state capital Bangalore in all aspects. It is one of the fastest developing cities in India.

Mysore Junction railway station, re-christened as Mysuru Junction railway station is a railway station on Mysore–Bangalore railway line serving the city of Mysore, Karnataka, India. Previously Mysore was connected to Bangalore by a single-line metre-gauge track. It was later converted into non-electrified broad-gauge line. It has now been converted to a double-line, electrified route.

Kannur has a good road network connecting to Bangalore, Mangalore, Kodagu and Cochin. The railway station is also well connected to all parts of India. There is new International airport from Kannur opened on 9 December 2018, other nearest airports are at Calicut and Mangalore. Thalassery, Payyanur, Taliparamba and Iritty are the other transport hubs.

SMVT Bengaluru – Murdeshwar Express is an Express train belonging to South Western Railway Zone of Indian Railways that run between Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, Bengaluru and Murdeshwar in India. It's a daily base train connecting with number of 16585/16586.

Kabaka Puttur is a major railway station on Mangalore–Hassan–Mysore line. It is located in Padil,Puttur, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka state, India. It consists of two platforms. It is named after two places: Kabaka which is 5 km away from railway station location and Puttur where railway station lies. The railway station lies 1.2 km away from Puttur KSRTC bus stand and 1.1 km away from Puttur–Uppinangadi Main Road
