The Erie Canal in New York is part of the east–west, cross-state route of the New York State Canal System. It was built to create a navigable water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, originally stretching for 363 miles (584 km) from the Hudson River in Albany to Lake Erie in Buffalo. Completed in 1825, it was the second longest canal in the world and greatly enhanced the development and economy of the cities of New York, including Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, and New York City, as well as the United States. This was in part due to the new ease of transport of salt and other goods, and industries that developed around those.
Letchworth State Park is a 14,427-acre (5,838 ha) New York State Park located in Livingston County and Wyoming County in the northwestern part of the State of New York. The park is roughly 17 miles (27 km) long, following the course of the Genesee River as it flows north through a deep gorge and over several large waterfalls. It is located 35 miles (56 km) southwest of Rochester and 60 miles (97 km) southeast of Buffalo, and spans portions of the Livingston County towns of Leicester, Mount Morris, and Portage, as well as the Wyoming County towns of Castile and Genesee Falls.
Belfast is a town in Allegany County, New York, United States. The town is in what is called the Southern Tier of the state. Its population was 1,663 at the 2010 census. It was named in 1825 after the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland, because it had numerous residents of Scots-Irish ancestry from that area.
Portageville is a hamlet located in the town of Genesee Falls in Wyoming County, New York. Its name derives from the Native American canoeists who would withdraw their craft from the river to avoid going over three waterfalls in the Genesee River gorge now known as Portage Falls. They had to portage several miles to the site of present-day Mount Morris, where they could embark for the rest of the journey downriver.
Mount Morris is a village in the town of Mount Morris in Livingston County, New York, United States. The village population was 2,986 at the 2010 census, out of 4,465 in the entire town. The village and town are named after Robert Morris.

The Rochester Industrial and Rapid Transit Railway, more commonly known as the Rochester subway was a light rail rapid transit line in the city of Rochester, New York, from 1927 to 1956. The subway was constructed in the bed of the old Erie Canal, which allowed the route to be grade-separated for its entire length. Two miles (3.2 km) of the route through downtown were constructed in a cut-and-cover tunnel that became Broad Street, and the only underground portion of the subway. The Rochester Subway was designed to reduce interurban traffic on city streets, and to facilitate freight interchange between the railroads. The line was operated on a contract basis by New York State Railways until Rochester Transit Corporation (RTC) took over in 1938. The last day of passenger service was June 30, 1956. Portions of the right-of-way were used for expressway construction, while the rest was abandoned and filled in over the years. The largest remaining section is a stretch of tunnel under Broad Street from Exchange Street to the intersection of Court Street and South Avenue.
The Delaware and Hudson Canal was the first venture of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, which would later build the Delaware and Hudson Railway. Between 1828 and 1899, the canal's barges carried anthracite coal from the mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania to the Hudson River and thence to market in New York City.
The Genesee Valley Greenway is a rail trail in western New York's Genesee River valley.
Maplewood Park, also known as Seneca Park West, is a landscaped public park in Rochester, New York, situated between Lake Avenue and the Genesee River. The two-mile-long (3.2 km) park features many trails along the river gorge and the river bank below, scenic views of two waterfalls and a nationally accredited Rose Garden.
Genesee College was founded as the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, in 1831, by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The college was located in Lima, New York, and eventually relocated to Syracuse, becoming Syracuse University.
First Presbyterian Church of Tuscarora is a historic Presbyterian church located at Tuscarora in Livingston County, New York. It was built about 1844 and is a three- by five-bay Greek Revival style frame building. The gable roof is surmounted by a short, two stage tower topped by a pyramidal roof with a slight concave curve with a cross at its apex. The interior features an elaborate Eastlake style three tier oil chandelier suspended in the center of the sanctuary over the main aisle. It is last surviving public building from the hamlet's brief early to mid-19th century commercial prosperity related to its location on the Genesee Valley Canal.
Whiteside, Barnett and Co. Agricultural Works, also known as Canal-Front Warehouse, is a historic factory and warehouse complex located at Brockport in Monroe County, New York. It is a largely intact and rare surviving example of the brownstone industrial building that once lined the banks of the Erie Canal at Brockport. It is also the only surviving building related to the local reaper manufacturing industry. The existing buildings were built between 1850 and 1852 for the Agricultural Works in Brockport, later known as Whiteside, Barnett and Co. The property was later used as a lumberyard from about 1880 to 1904 and as a cannery until 1945.
Erie Canal: Second Genesee Aqueduct, also known as the Broad Street Aqueduct or Broad Street Bridge, is a historic stone aqueduct located at Rochester in Monroe County, New York. It was constructed in 1836–1842 and originally carried the Erie Canal over the Genesee River. The overall length of the aqueduct including the wings and abutments is 800 feet (240 m). The aqueduct is 70 feet (21 m) wide and has massive parapets on either side. It is one of four major aqueducts in the mid-19th century Erie Canal system. In 1927, a roadbed was added to carry automobile traffic and named Broad Street. It also carried a part of the Rochester Subway.
Lehigh Valley Railroad Station is a historic railway station located at Rochester in Monroe County, New York. The Lehigh Valley Railroad built the station in 1905 but stopped using the station for passenger service in the 1950s. Later the station was used as a bus terminal and then as a night club. In the 1980s the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places and today it houses the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que restaurant.
The Old Stone Warehouse in Rochester, New York is a historic warehouse building. It was built in 1822 and is a four-story, trapezoidal building with six story addition built of Medina sandstone. It was built by Myron Holley and was located on the Erie Canal. During the mid 19th century it was used as a foundry.
Black River Canal Warehouse is a historic canal warehouse building located at Boonville in Oneida County, New York. It was built in 1850 and is a 1 1⁄2-story, rectangular, wood-frame building, 28 feet by 40 feet with a gable roof. It was built as a warehouse on the Black River Canal and used as such until the canal was abandoned in 1924.
Samuel Sweet Canal Store is a historic commercial building located at 65 Bridge Street in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York. It was built c.1847 to service barged on the Erie Canal, as both a store and a forwarding warehouse for goods shipped across the Mohawk River.
