Thorpe Edge is a housing estate located in, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.

Geography and administration

Thorpe Edge is situated off Harrogate Road in the north-east of the City of Bradford and borders Idle, Five Lane Ends, Greengates and Eccleshill.

History

Once farm land, the estate was mostly constructed in the 1950s. It was constructed mostly of low-rise housing but, with two high-rise developments; the York Place flats and the Fairhaven Green flats. All of the high-rise flats are eight-storeys in height and still standing, [1] the larger York House has shops on the ground floor. Some mid-rise flats were also constructed along the Northern edge of the estate. These were demolished in the 2010s. Some of the older low-rise houses were demolished in the 2000's. York House recently underwent a site survey and deemed unfit for purpose. Incommunities filed an application to Bradford Council for the demolition of the site and the council agreed. Work started in the summer of 2024. Once complete, York House will make way for social housing.

Amenities

The estate has a church; St John the Divine on Idlethorp Way, a school; Parkland Primary School and shops on the ground floor of York House. Once York House is demolished, they will be no shop facilities on the estate. The estate is surrounded by areas with a greater number of amenities such as, Enterprise Five retail park situated at Five Lane Ends. Sainsbury's supermarket and Matalan retail store is also nearby at Greengates, whilst Eccleshill swimming baths is situated at Eccleshill. Apperley Bridge railway station is approximately 1 mile away.

It was originally owned by the local council, and was leased by the council to tenants as a council estate. Most of the housing on the estate is now privately owned. Moor Grange does not suffer the crime problems of other council estates. House prices on the estate are high, and Moor Grange is considered a 'model council estate'. This may be due to the affluence of the area in which it is situated. Moor Grange backs onto the smaller Spen Estate which is another council estate in West Park. The Estate falls within the Kirkstall ward of the Leeds Metropolitan Council.

Ravenscliffe is a housing estate in the Eccleshill ward of the city of Bradford District, in the English county of West Yorkshire. Ravenscliffe is located to the west of Fagley Beck and to the east of the A658 Harrogate Road. The buildings that were Ravenscliff farmhouse are situated off to the south in Fagley while Ravenscliffe Woods are in Pudsey to the south east.

The 1950s and 1960s saw the construction of numerous brutalist apartment blocks in Sheffield, England. The Sheffield City Council had been clearing inner-city residential slums since the early 1900s. Prior to the 1950s these slums were replaced with low-rise council housing, mostly constructed in new estates on the edge of the city. By the mid-1950s the establishment of a green belt had led to a shortage of available land on the edges of the city, whilst the government increased subsidies for the construction of high-rise apartment towers on former slum land, so the council began to construct high-rise inner city estates, adopting modernist designs and industrialised construction techniques, culminating in the construction of the award-winning Gleadless Valley and Park Hill estates.
