Indus Motor Company Limited, operating as Toyota Indus, is a Pakistani automobile manufacturer which is a subsidiary of Japanese multinational automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. It is based in Karachi, Pakistan.

Founded in 1989, as a joint venture between House of Habib, Toyota Tsusho and Toyota Motors. [1] [2] [3]

Indus Motor is the authorized assembler and manufacturer of Toyota and Daihatsu vehicles, auto parts and accessories in Pakistan since 1 July 1990 at its 109.5 acres (0.443 km2) manufacturing plant at Port Qasim Industrial Zone, outside Karachi. [4]

History

Indus Motor Company was incorporated as a public limited company in December 1989 and was listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange in 1992. [5] The company started its commercial operations in March 1993. [2]

In March 2000, the company started production of the L500 series Daihatsu Mira in Pakistan which was locally sold as the Daihatsu Cuore and featured an 850-cc engine. [6]

In 2008, Toyota acquired 9.83 million shares from Overseas Investors AG and general public at the price of Rs. 370 (equivalent to Rs. 1,900orUS$6.50 in 2021) per share. [7]

In January 2012, the company halted production of the L500 series Daihatsu Cuore in Pakistan. [8]

Former Chairman of Indus Motor Company Ltd, Ali Suleman Habib died on 18 April 2020. [9]

Operations

In May 2023, Toyota Indus announced that the Corolla Cross Hybrid would be locally assembled in Pakistan. [10]

Toyota Indus started exporting automotive parts to Toyota Egypt in July 2023. [11]

After an investment of over $100 million, the company inaugurated its hybrid electric vehicle assembly line on 6 December, 2023. [12] Following the inauguration of the assembly line, the company commenced the production of the Corolla Cross Hybrid, making it Toyota's first hybrid electric vehicle to be assembled in Pakistan. [13]

In August 2024, Toyota Indus began exporting Corolla Cross, Hilux and Fortuner models to Oceanian countries. [14]

Products

Toyota Indus sells two different types of vehicles; complete knock-down kits (CKD) which are locally assembled at their plant in Karachi and completely built units (CBU) which are imported from the Toyota plants in Japan or Thailand, depending on the vehicle.

The Daihatsu Hijet is a cab over microvan and kei truck produced and sold by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu since 1960. Despite the similarities between the Hijet name and Toyota's naming scheme for its trucks and vans, the name "Hijet" has been in use for Daihatsu's kei trucks and microvans since 1960, over two decades before Toyota took control. "Hijet", when transliterated into Japanese, is very similar to "Midget", one of Daihatsu's other mini-trucks. According to Daihatsu, the name "Hijet" was created to imply that the vehicle offers higher performance than the Midget. The Hijet competes in Japan with the Honda Acty, Mitsubishi Minicab, Nissan Clipper, Subaru Sambar and Suzuki Carry.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. (UMWT) is the appointed Toyota distributor, assembler and exporter of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia. The company was founded in October 1982 as Sejati Motor, prior to being renamed UMW Toyota Motor in October 1987.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Automotive industry in Pakistan</span>

The automotive industry in Pakistan is one of fastest-growing industries in the country, growing by 171% between 2014 and 2018. It accounts for 7% of Pakistan's GDP and employed a workforce of over 6.8 million people as of 2024. Pakistan is the 15th largest producer of automobiles. Its contribution to the national exchequer is nearly US$5.4 billion. Pakistan's auto market is among the fastest growing in Asia. 384,000 cars were sold in 2023. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Pakistan had many Japanese cars. With the launch of the first Auto Policy in 2005, Pakistan launched its first indigenous car, Adam Revo. However, after the 2008 elections, the dollar started depreciating, and due to bad governance, many automakers began to halt production, with some exiting Pakistan. Currently, the auto market is dominated by Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki. However, on 19 March 2016, Pakistan passed a second "Auto Policy 2016-21," which offers tax incentives to new automakers to establish manufacturing plants in the country. In response, Renault, Nissan, Proton Holdings, Kia, SsangYong, Volkswagen, FAW, and Hyundai have expressed interest in entering the Pakistani market. MG JW Automobile Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Morris Garages (MG) Motor UK Limited, owned by SAIC Motor, to bring electric vehicles to Pakistan. NLC signed an agreement with Mercedes-Benz to manufacture Mercedes Actros trucks in Pakistan. On 8 July 2021, Jolta Electric launched the production of electric motorcycles.

Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd. (TMT) is the wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation in Thailand, established in 1962. In 1979, Toyota began making pressed body parts in Thailand. In 1989, TMT began manufacturing engines locally. TMT controls the manufacturing of Toyota cars in Thailand and they supply cars to various official dealers throughout Thailand. TMT's main export market is the ASEAN region and the Oceania, but TMT also export cars to different parts of the world, especially the Toyota Hilux Vigo model. As of April 2016, there were 150 official Toyota dealers with 455 showrooms approved by TMT.

Toyota Motor East Japan is a manufacturing subsidiary of the Toyota group based in Japan. It was founded in July 2012 by the merger of Central Motors, Kanto Auto Works and Toyota Motors Tohoku.
