Wilmot Godfrey James (born 5 July 1953) is a South African academic who served as the country's opposition spokesperson of health and Member of Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance. [1] His constituencies were Mitchells Plain and Rondebosch. He was elected the party's Federal Chairperson between 2010 and 2015. Dr. James contested for the post of party leader in 2016,but lost the election to Mmusi Maimane. James served as director of Sanlam,Media24 and the Africa Genome Education Institute,and was chairperson of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Immigration Advisory Board of South Africa. He is also a former Trustee of the Ford Foundation of New York. He currently is a Senior Research Scholar at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy and teaches a course on catastrophic risks at Columbia University in New York City. He is a senior consultant to the Washington DC-based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) on biosecurity.
Wilmot James was born in Paarl on 5 July 1953,to Peter Charles James and Shelma Rumine Hartel. He attended Athlone High School,and matriculated in 1970. [2]
Dr. James graduated from the University of the Western Cape in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts Honours cum laude. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States,and attained his MS from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1978,and a PhD from the same institution in 1982. [3] In 1985 he held a post doctoral fellowship at the Southern African Research Program,Yale University. He was a visiting professor at Indiana University,Bloomington,in 1990,and a visiting fellow at the American Bar Foundation in Chicago in 1992.
Dr. James joined the Department of Sociology as a lecturer at the University of Cape Town in 1986 and rose to become a full Professor by 1993. In early 1994 he was seconded to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to run the information division for the Western Cape during the nation's first democratic election. He succeeded Dr. Alex Boraine to become the executive director of the Institute for Democracy in South Africa in 1994,and served at IDASA until 1998. In 1999 he was appointed Dean of Humanities at the University of Cape Town.
Dr. James advised the Office of President Nelson Mandela's Director-General Jakes Gerwel on the renaming of his (Mandela's) Cape residence –from Westbrooke to Genadendal –and on constitutional rights education for colored (mixed descent) communities (see Now That We Are Free,Boulder,Lynne Rienner Publishers,1996) torn between accepting majority rule and worrying about minority interests. With the late and greatly missed Kader Asmal and David Chidester,he served as a contributing author and co-editor of Nelson Mandela in His Own Words (Boston and London,Little Brown and Co.,2003,republished in 2018). In all,Dr. James is the author of 3 and editor or co-editor of 14 books. His most recent book is Vital Signs:Health Security in South Africa (Brenthurst Foundation,Johannesburg,2020).
James was appointed an executive director at the Human Sciences Research Council in 2001,a position he held until 2004.
In 2003 he was the Gordon Moore Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Humanities at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,California.
In 2005 James was appointed Director of the Africa Genome Education Institute.
James was a Honorary Professor of Sociology (University of Pretoria) and Human Genetics (University of Cape Town). He is an Honorary Professor of Public Health at the [University of the Witwatersrand] today [4]
In 2001,James was appointed Associate Editor at the Cape Argus newspaper,but left the paper later that year. In 2004 he became a Director at Naspers's Media24.
James served as a trustee of the Ford Foundation of New York between 1996 and 2008.
In 2009 James became a Member of Parliament with the Democratic Alliance,South Africa's opposition party. [5] He was first appointed as opposition spokesperson on higher education,and later moved to the basic education portfolio. In 2010 he was elected federal chairperson of the party unopposed,a post he held for five years. He served as spokesperson of trade and industry for his party between 2012 and 2014, [6] and as spokesperson on health till June 2017.
In June 2017,Wilmot James left parliament for a visiting professorship in the US focusing on global fight against infectious disease epidemics as a visiting professor at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. [7] [8] [9]
Anthony James Leon is a South African politician who served as leader of the opposition from 1999-2007 as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA). He led the DA from its inception in 2000,until his retirement from leadership in 2007. Before that,he led the Democratic Party from 1994. He is the longest serving leader of the official opposition in parliament since the advent of democracy in 1994. Although still a member of the DA,he served as the South African Ambassador to Argentina,Uruguay and Paraguay under the ANC government from 2009 to 2012.
Mamphela Aletta Ramphele is a South African politician,anti-apartheid activist,medical doctor and businesswoman. She was a partner of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko,with whom she had two children. She is a former vice-chancellor at the University of Cape Town and a former managing director at the World Bank. Ramphele founded political party Agang South Africa in February 2013 but withdrew from politics in July 2014. Since 2018,she has been the co-president of the Club of Rome
Valli Moosa is Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Climate Commission and Chairperson of the Constitution Hill trust. He was born in Johannesburg and is a veteran of the South African freedom struggle. Valli worked closely with Nelson Mandela during the settlement talks,served as negotiator for the ANC,and participated in drafting the South African Constitution. He served in President Mandela’s cabinet as Minister of Constitutional Development,and in President Mbeki’s government as Environment Minister. Valli joined the corporate sector in 2004 and currently serves on the board of Sappi Ltd. He has previously served on the boards of Anglo Platinum,Eskom and Sanlam. Valli served as a facilitator in the global climate change negotiations for a number of years. He previously served as President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN),as Chairman of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development and as Chairman of WWF(SA).
Otta Helene Maree,known as Helen Zille,is a South African politician. She has served as the Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. From 2009 until 2019,she was the Premier of the Western Cape province for two five-year terms,and a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. She served as Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2015 and as Mayor of Cape Town from 2006 to 2009.
Geraldine Joslyn Fraser-Moleketi is a South African politician who was the Minister of Public Service and Administration from June 1999 to September 2008. Before that,from July 1996 to June 1999,she was Minister of Welfare and Population Development. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2008 and is a former deputy chairperson of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

Roland Athol Price Trollip is a South African politician and provincial chairman of ActionSA in the Eastern Cape. He was previously a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA),serving as the Federal Chairperson of the DA from 2015 to 2019 and the Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality,serving from 2016 until he was unseated in a vote of no confidence in 2018.
Natasha Wendy Anita MazzoneMP OSI is a South African politician who served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from October 2019 until August 2022. She has been a Member of the National Assembly,representing the official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA),since 2009. She was the second Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the DA and the party's spokesperson on state capture. Mazzone has previously served as Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises and of Communications.
James Lorimer is a South African politician,a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance,and the Shadow Minister of Environmental Affairs,Forestry and Fisheries. Previously he has served as a deputy spokesperson on Parliament's defence and basic education committees,and as Shadow Minister on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs as well as Mineral Affairs. Cedric Thomas Frolick,is the current House Chairperson:Committees,Oversight and ICT in the National Assembly of Parliament for the Republic of South Africa. A teacher,politician,anti-apartheid activist. He retired from teaching in 1999 and subsequently became a politician in the National Assembly. On 18 November 2010,the ANC appointed him as the House Chairperson responsible for Committees,ICT and Oversight.

The Shadow Cabinet of Mmusi Maimane was formed on 5 June 2014 in South Africa following his election as Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Leader of the Opposition on 29 May 2014. The Democratic Alliance parliamentary caucus also elected other caucus leadership. John Steenhuisen was elected Chief Whip with Anchen Dreyer as Caucus Chairperson. These elections all occurred following the 2014 general elections,in which the Democratic Alliance retained its post as the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.
Ashor Sarupen is a South African politician who serves as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Democratic Alliance (DA),after having taken office on 22 May 2019. He is a representative of the party on both the Standing Committee on Appropriations and the Standing Committee on Finance. He also served as chief of staff to DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille,and presently serves as her Parliamentary Counsellor. He previously served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019 and before that,he was the Democratic Alliance Chief Whip and City Councillor in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality from 2011 to 2014.
Andrew Grant Whitfield is a South African politician who has been the Shadow Minister of Police since 2019 and a Member of the National Assembly for the Democratic Alliance since 2019 and previously from 2014 to 2016. Having served as the provincial chairman of the DA in the Eastern Cape from 2017 to 2023,he is currently the provincial leader of the party and the leader of the party's Tsitsi-Kouga Constituency. Whitfield had previously served on the Nelson Mandela Bay city council and in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.
Baxolile Babongile Nodada is a South African politician for the Democratic Alliance who has been a Member of Parliament since 2019,and the Shadow Minister of Basic Education and the Parliamentary Counsellor to the Leader of the Opposition in John Steenhuisen's Shadow Cabinet since 2020.
Luyolo Mphithi is a South African politician who has been the Shadow Minister of Human Settlements since 2023 and a Member of Parliament since 2019. He previously served as Shadow Minister of Women,Youth and Persons with Disabilities in the Presidency from 2019 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as the Federal Leader of the party's youth organisation from 2018 until his resignation in 2022. Luyolo Mphithi was elected as Vice President of the African Liberal Youth for democracy in Dakar,Senegal in 2022. He also serves as a Bureau Regional member of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY).
