The politics of the Philippines take place within a three-branch governmental system. The country is a democracy, led by a directly elected president who serves as both the head of state and the head of government. The president heads the executive branch, and has significant political powers. Presidents are limited to a single six-year term of office. The bicameral Congress serves as the legislature, consisting of the small Senate, elected on an at-large basis throughout the country, and the larger House of Representatives, primarily made up of representatives elected from specific geographic regions. The judiciary is headed by the Supreme Court of the Philippines, a body with expansive powers of review over actions taken by other political and administrative bodies.
A city is one of the units of local government in the Philippines. All Philippine cities are chartered cities, whose existence as corporate and administrative entities is governed by their own specific municipal charters in addition to the Local Government Code of 1991, which specifies their administrative structure and powers. As of September 7, 2019, there are 146 cities.

Sergio "Serging" Veloso Osmeña Jr. was a Filipino politician who served as a Senator of the Philippines, and ran against Ferdinand Marcos in the 1969 Philippine Presidential election. He was the son of Sergio Osmeña, the fourth president of the Philippines. His son, Sergio "Serge" Osmeña III, was also a Senator of the Philippines.

Juan Miguel "Migz" Fernandez Zubiri is a Filipino businessman and politician serving as the Senate Majority Leader since 2018, and previously holding the position from 2008 to 2010. Since 2016, he has been on his second stint in the Senate, first serving from 2007 to 2011. He was the representative of Bukidnon's 3rd district from 1998 to 2007. He is also the presumptive President of the Senate of the Philippines and will assume this position on July 25, 2022.
The 1969 Philippine presidential and vice presidential elections were held on November 11, 1969. Incumbent President Ferdinand Marcos won a second full term as President of the Philippines. Marcos was the last president in the entire electoral history of the Philippines who ran for and won a second term. His running mate, incumbent Vice President Fernando Lopez, was also elected to a third full term as Vice President of the Philippines. An unprecedented twelve candidates ran for president, but ten of those got less than 0.01% of the vote.

This was the first legislative election since 1984, the first House of Representatives elections since 1969, and the first election since the People Power Revolution that overthrew president Ferdinand Marcos and brought Corazon Aquino to power after alleged election fraud by the former during the 1986 presidential election against the latter.

With Fernando Lopez as his vice president, he ran against the Liberal Party slate of Sergio Osmena Jr. and Genaro Magsaysay.
