Herkimer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,139. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County. It is named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from battle wounds in 1777 after taking part in the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War.

The Battle of Oriskany was a significant engagement of the Saratoga campaign of the American Revolutionary War, and one of the bloodiest battles in the conflict between the Colonials and Great Britain. On August 6, 1777, a party of Loyalists and several hundred Indigenous allies across several nations ambushed an American military party that was marching to relieve the siege of Fort Stanwix. This was one of the few battles in which the majority of the participants were Americans; Rebels and allied Oneidas fought against Loyalists and allied Iroquois in the absence of British regular soldiers. There was also a detachment of Hessians in the British force, as well as Western Indians including members of the Mississauga people.

Built in 1837, the building was established as a Universalist church. Since 1961, the congregation has been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association due to a denominational merger. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Cortland was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

The Reformed Church is a historic Reformed church at 405 N. Main Street in Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. It was built in 1835 and is a two-story, painted brick structure with a stone rear wing. It features a staged spire in the Federal style, with a clock in the base of the spire.
Trinity Episcopal Church—Fairfield is a historic Episcopal church located on NY 29 in the hamlet of Fairfield, Herkimer County, New York. It was built in 1808, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three bay by four bay, wood-frame church with a gable roof. It features a projecting three-story, flat topped square bell tower, centered on the front facade. The church houses an 1845 George Jardine pipe organ that can still be hand pumped. The bell from the Fairfield Academy was installed in the bell tower in 1962. It is considered the mother church to subsequent Episcopal congregations in Herkimer County.
Herkimer County Historical Society is located in the 1884 Suiter Building, a historic home in Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, wood-frame structure with red pressed brick walls laid in black mortar built in 1884. It features a complex pitched roof of slate with a brick corbelled cornice and terra cotta ornament along the roof edge. There is also an octagonal peaked roof above the corner tower. Built originally as a private home, it was unfinished at the time of its builders death in 1925 and given to the Herkimer County Historical Society who occupied it in 1935.
Herkimer County Trust Company Building is a historic bank building located at Little Falls, New York in Herkimer County, New York. It was built in 1833 and is a three-by-two-bay rectangular structure built of cut stone and broken range masonry. It features a portico supported by four Ionic order stone columns and gable roof in the Greek Revival style. It housed the Herkimer County Bank/Herkimer County Trust Company until 1917, and now houses the local historical society.
Van Alstyne Homestead is a historic home located at Canajoharie in Montgomery County, New York. It is a long, low rectangular house with a steeply pitched gambrel roof in the Dutch Colonial style. The original fieldstone house was built before 1730 and has three rooms with a garret under the roof. A 2+1⁄2-story frame addition runs across the rear.
Overlook, also known as the Burrell Mansion, is a historic home located at Little Falls in Herkimer County, New York. It was designed by architect Archimedes Russell and built about 1889 for industrialist and inventor David H. Burrell (1841-1919). It is a three-story, asymmetrical masonry building. It features three full height towers, two rounded with conical roofs and one polygonal. Also on the property is a contributing carriage house and caretaker's cottage.

The buildings date from the mid-19th to the early-20th century. There are a number of Italianate-style commercial buildings and notable residences in popular 19th-century architectural styles including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival. Notable non-residential buildings include the Masonic Temple (1914), East Park Elementary School, Public Library, and St. Mary's Catholic Church Complex. The separately listed James Sanders House is located in the district.
