Incertovenator (meaning "uncertain hunter") is an extinct genus of archosauriform reptile, likely an archosaur, of uncertain affinities. Its unstable position is a result of possessing a number features found in both the bird-line avemetatarsalian archosaurs and the crocodylian-line pseudosuchians. The type and only known species is I. longicollum, which is known from single specimen discovered in the Late Triassic (Carnian aged) Ischigualasto Formation of Argentina. Incertovenator is known almost entirely by its vertebral column. This indicates that it had a relatively long neck, leading to its uncertain classification due to the convergent evolution of elongated neck vertebrae in both avemetatarsalian and pseudosuchian archosaurs. Discovery and naming

The type and only known specimen of Incertovenator, PVSJ 397, was discovered in the Cancha de Bochas member of the Ischigualasto Formation. The specimen was found at the Hoyada de Ischigualasto locality in the southern region of Ischigualasto Provincial Park, stratigraphically positioned at roughly mid-level in the Cancha de Bochas member, approximately 120 metres (390 ft) above the base of the Ischigualasto Formation. The specimen was formally described in 2021 by Imanol Yáñez, Diego Pol, Juan Martín Leardi, Oscar A. Alcober, and Ricardo N. Martínez, and is held in the Museo de Ciencias Naturales at the National University of San Juan, Argentina. [1]

The specimen is almost entirely known by its vertebral column (axial skeleton): five cervical vertebrae (including the axis), ten articulated mid-to-posterior dorsal vertebrae, two sacral vertebrae, and six caudal vertebrae (five of which are complete). The only other bones found with the specimen are a complete ilium and two unidentifiable bone fragments. The specimen is preserved partially articulated. However, the overall preservation is poor, with a dark reddish-brown to grey colouration indicative of a haematite coating and permineralization. Additionally, the deformation has distorted the shape of the vertebrae and parts of them have been cracked and weathered away. [1]

The generic name comes from the Latin words incerto- (uncertain) and venator (hunter), referencing its uncertain phylogenetic relationships to other archosaurs and its presumed predatory lifestyle. Likewise, the specific name is from Latin longus and collum, meaning "long neck", in recognition of its notably elongated cervical vertebrae. [1]

As it is known almost entirely from vertebrae, little can be confidently said about the life appearance of Incertovenator, apart from it having a relatively long neck. However, it was likely a quadruped, similar to the majority of other early-diverging archosaurs, including potential relatives (aphanosaurs and early-diverging loricatans).

The axial skeleton of Incertovenator is well-known, with vertebrae from all the major regions of the spine (cervicals, dorsals, sacrals and caudals) as well as associated ribs. The cervicals are characteristically elongated, with centra (the main body of the vertebra) 2.5 times as long as they are wide. The neural spines are similarly longer than high, and overhang each centrum at the front with tips that are expanded and rugosely textured. [1]

The dorsal vertebrae are shorter than the cervicals, but are still relatively long compared with other archosaurs; their centra are both longer than they are tall, and taller than wide. Unlike the cervicals, they lack a keel on their underside and have no hollowed out fossae on their surfaces. The neural spines, however, are similar to the cervicals' in that they are long and low, roughly similar in height to the centra. This trait is unusual for aphanosaurs, but similar to some dinosauromorphs, crocodylomorphs and Mandasuchus . [1]

Incertovenator has only two sacral vertebrae, the ancestral condition for archosaurs, and they are unfused. Their neural spines are low, like the dorsals, although the first sacral spine has a slight forward slant and the second resembles that of the axis, with an arched upper margin. The caudal centra are also longer than they are high, although they gradually become shorter moving down the tail. The neural spines are also similar to those of the dorsals, although they shift from a roughly central position from the first caudal towards the back of the centrum by the fifth caudal. [1]

The only other known part of the skeleton is the ilium, the large hip bone that forms the top part of the pelvis. The most notable feature of the ilium is the elongated preacetabular process projecting forward beyond the acetabulum (hip socket). This is an uncommon feature of early archosaurs, and is otherwise only known to occur in poposauroids, crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs and dinosaurs. The ilium also has a concave upper margin when seen from the side. The acetabulum (hip socket) is completely closed, and has a prominent roof formed by a supraacetabular crest, a ridge of bone bordering the top and front of the acetabulum. This relatively long supraacetabular crest is similar to some early crocodylomorphs (e.g. Trialestes ) but not others (e.g. Terrestrisuchus ). The joint between the peduncles for the attachment of the pubis and ischium is triangular, with an angle of roughly 140° between them. This is typical of most pseudosuchians and early avemetatarsalians, but unlike the concave margin of dinosaurs, poposauroids and most crocodylomorphs. [1]

Classification

When introduced to a dataset of Triassic archosauriforms, Incertovenator was able to occupy multiple equally parsimonious positions in the resulting cladogram (shown below), making it difficult to determine its true evolutionary relationships. Incertovenator was able to occupy these differing positions due to it possessing various traits associated with distinct lineages of early-diverging archosaurs, namely convergent traits related to an elongated neck. For example, it shares with various aphanosaurs mid-cervicals longer than its mid-dorsals, cervical neural spines with expanded tips and a roughened texture, dorsal neural spines with expanded, rounded tips, and cervical neural spines that slant forwards at their front edge (a trait previously interpreted as an unambiguous synapomorphy of aphanosaurs). Alternatively, a position in Pseudosuchia related to Mandasuchus is supported by sharing a convex dorsal margin of the axial neural spine and a forward slant to the front face of their cervicals. Additional suboptimal positions were also identified on the cladogram, including as the sister taxon to pterosaurs or gracilisuchids (one step longer), or various positions within Dinosauromorpha, Poposauroidea and elsewhere among early suchians, early diverging crocodylomorphs, and in one analysis even as the sister taxon to the non-archosaur proterochampsid Tropidosuchus . Some of these positions were also associated with the elongation of the cervicals, although notably the shape of the ilium is similar to early crocodylomorphs, derived poposauroids, pterosaurs and dinosaurs, namely the long preacetabular process. These conflicting signals cloud its relationship to other archosaurs even further. [1]

Palaeoecology

As indicated by its name, Incertovenator was presumed to be a predator, largely due to the convergent evolution of similar long-necks being associated with small-sized predatory archosaurs. [1] The Cancha de Brochas member is correlated with the Scaphonyx-Exaeretodon-Herrerasaurus Biozone, in which Incertovenator coexisted with the dinosaurs Eoraptor , Herrerasaurus, Sanjuansaurus and Chromogisaurus , as well as the pseudosuchians Saurosuchus , Sillosuchus and Trialestes . It also coexisted with various other reptiles, including the abundant rhynchosaur Hyperodapedon (="Scaphonyx"), the aetosaur Aetosauroides , the silesaurid Ignotosaurus , and the two proterochampsids Proterochampsa and Pseudochampsa . Coeval synapsids include the large dicynodont Ischigualastia and the cynodonts Chiniquodon , Diegocanis , Ecteninion , and Exaeretodon. [2]

<i>Teleocrater</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Teleocrater is a genus of avemetatarsalian archosaur from the Middle Triassic Manda Formation of Tanzania. The name was coined by English paleontologist Alan Charig in his 1956 doctoral dissertation, but was only formally published in 2017 by Sterling Nesbitt and colleagues. The genus contains the type and only species T. rhadinus. Uncertainty over the affinities of Teleocrater have persisted since Charig's initial publication; they were not resolved until Nesbitt et al. performed a phylogenetic analysis. They found that Teleocrater is most closely related to the similarly enigmatic Yarasuchus, Dongusuchus, and Spondylosoma in a group that was named the Aphanosauria. Aphanosauria was found to be the sister group of the Ornithodira, the group containing dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

<i>Poposaurus</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Poposaurus is an extinct genus of pseudosuchian archosaur from the Late Triassic of the southwestern United States. It belongs to the clade Poposauroidea, an unusual group of Triassic pseudosuchians that includes sail-backed, beaked, and aquatic forms. Fossils have been found in Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Texas. Except for the skull, most parts of the skeleton are known. The type species, P. gracilis, was described and named by Maurice Goldsmith Mehl in 1915. A second species, P. langstoni, was originally the type species of the genus Lythrosuchus. Since it was first described, Poposaurus has been variously classified as a dinosaur, a phytosaur, and a "rauisuchian".

Qianosuchus was at least 3 metres long, and had several skeletal adaptations which indicate a semi-marine lifestyle, similar to modern-day saltwater crocodiles. The type species, T. dabanensis, was described by C.C. Young in 1973, based on a partially complete but disarticulated fossil skeleton found in the Kelamayi Formation of the Turfan Basin.

<i>Sillosuchus</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Sillosuchus is a genus of shuvosaurid poposauroid archosaur that lived in South America during the Late Triassic period. Shuvosaurids were an unusual family of reptiles belonging to the group Poposauroidea; although their closest modern relatives are crocodilians, they were bipedal and lightly armored, with dinosaur-like hip and skull structures. Based on skull remains from members of the family such as Effigia, they were also toothless and likely beaked herbivores.

Yarasuchus is an extinct genus of avemetatarsalian archosaur that lived during the Anisian stage of the Middle Triassic of India. The genus was named and described in 2005 from a collection of disarticulated but fairly complete fossil material found from the Middle Triassic Yerrapalli Formation. The material is thought to be from two individuals, possibly three, with one being much more complete and articulated than the other. The type and only species is Y. deccanensis. Yarasuchus was a quadruped roughly 2–2.5 metres (6.6–8.2 ft) long, with an elongated neck and tall spines on its vertebrae. Unlike other quadrupedal Triassic reptiles, the limbs and shoulders of Yarasuchus were slender, and more like those of ornithodirans.

Mandasuchus is an extinct genus of loricatan pseudosuchian from the Manda Formation of Tanzania, which dates back to the Anisian stage of the Middle Triassic. Although this genus was first mentioned by Alan Charig in 1956, a formal description was not published until 2018.

<i>Vancleavea</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Vancleavea is a genus of extinct, armoured, non-archosaurian archosauriforms from the Late Triassic of western North America. The type and only known species is V. campi, named by Robert Long & Phillip A Murry in 1995. At that time, the genus was only known from fragmentary bones including osteoderms and vertebrae. However, since then many more fossils have been found, including a pair of nearly complete skeletons discovered in 2002. These finds have shown that members of the genus were bizarre semiaquatic reptiles. Vancleavea individuals had short snouts with large, fang-like teeth, and long bodies with small limbs. They were completely covered with bony plates known as osteoderms, which came in several different varieties distributed around the body. Phylogenetic analyses by professional paleontologists have shown that Vancleavea was an archosauriform, part of the lineage of reptiles that would lead to archosaurs such as dinosaurs and crocodilians. Vancleavea lacks certain traits which are present in most other archosauriforms, most notably the antorbital, mandibular and supratemporal fenestrae, which are weight-saving holes in the skulls of other taxa. However, other features clearly support its archosauriform identity, including a lack of intercentra, the presence of osteoderms, an ossified laterosphenoid, and several adaptations of the femur and ankle bones. In 2016, a new genus of archosauriform, Litorosuchus, was described. This genus resembled both Vancleavea and more typical archosauriforms in different respects, allowing Litorosuchus to act as a transitional fossil linking Vancleavea to less aberrant archosauriforms.

Scythosuchus is an extinct genus of rauisuchid. Remains have been found from Olenekian-age Lower Triassic beds in Russia, hence the name meaning 'Scythian crocodile'. The type and only species is S. basileus, described in 1999. Scythosuchus was between 2 and 3 metres long, and relatively heavily built. It is known from a partial skull, much of the spine, a fragment of the humerus and most of the hind leg and foot. It may have been the same animal as Tsylmosuchus donensis.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Poposauroidea</span> Extinct clade of reptiles

Poposauroidea is a clade of advanced pseudosuchians. It includes poposaurids, shuvosaurids, ctenosauriscids, and other unusual pseudosuchians such as Qianosuchus and Lotosaurus. However, it excludes most large predatory quadrupedal "rauisuchians" such as rauisuchids and "prestosuchids". Those reptiles are now allied with crocodylomorphs in a clade known as Loricata, which is the sister taxon to the poposauroids in the clade Paracrocodylomorpha. Although it was first formally defined in 2007, the name "Poposauroidea" has been used for many years. The group has been referred to as Poposauridae by some authors, although this name is often used more narrowly to refer to the family that includes Poposaurus and its close relatives.

Xilousuchus is an extinct genus of poposauroid from lower Triassic deposits of Fugu County of northeastern Shanxi Province, China. It is known from the holotype, IVPP V 6026, a single well-preserved partial skeleton including the skull. It was found from the Heshanggou Formation of the Ordos Basin, Hazhen commune. It was first named by Xiao-Chun Wu in 1981 and the type species is Xilousuchus sapingensis. Wu (1981) referred Xilousuchus to the Proterosuchia. Gower and Sennikov (1996) found it to be an erythrosuchian based strictly on the braincase. A more detailed re-description of the genus was provided by Nesbitt et al. (2010) and found poposauroid affinities. In his massive revision of archosaurs which included a large cladistic analysis, Sterling J. Nesbitt (2011) found Xilousuchus to be a poposauroid which is most closely related to Arizonasaurus. Xilousuchus is the oldest archosaur to date, although Ctenosauriscus and Vytshegdosuchus might be even older by less than one million year. Since Xilousuchus is a suchian archosaur, its early age suggests that most of the major groups of archosaurs developed by the Early Triassic, soon after the appearance of the first archosaur.

Nundasuchus is an extinct genus of crurotarsan, possibly a suchian archosaur related to Paracrocodylomorpha. Remains of this genus are known from the Middle Triassic Manda beds of southwestern Tanzania. It contains a single species, Nundasuchus songeaensis, known from a single partially complete skeleton, including vertebrae, limb elements, osteoderms, and skull fragments.

Aphanosauria is an extinct group of reptiles distantly related to dinosaurs. They are at the base of a group known as Avemetatarsalia, one of two main branches of archosaurs. The other main branch, Pseudosuchia, includes modern crocodilians. Aphanosaurs possessed features from both groups, indicating that they are the oldest and most primitive known clade of avemetatarsalians, at least in terms of their position on the archosaur family tree. Other avemetatarsalians include the flying pterosaurs, small bipedal lagerpetids, herbivorous silesaurids, and the incredibly diverse dinosaurs, which survive to the present day in the form of birds. Aphanosauria is formally defined as the most inclusive clade containing Teleocrater rhadinus and Yarasuchus deccanensis but not Passer domesticus or Crocodylus niloticus. This group was first recognized during the description of Teleocrater. Although only known by a few genera, Aphanosaurs had a widespread distribution across Pangaea in the Middle Triassic. They were fairly slow quadrupedal long-necked carnivores, a biology more similar to basal archosaurs than to advanced avemetatarsalians such as pterosaurs, lagerpetids, and early dinosaurs. In addition, they seemingly possess 'crocodile-normal' ankles, showing that 'advanced mesotarsal' ankles were not basal to the whole clade of Avemetatarsalia. Nevertheless, they possessed elevated growth rates compared to their contemporaries, indicating that they grew quickly, more like birds than other modern reptiles. Despite superficially resembling lizards, the closest modern relatives of aphanosaurs are birds.

Aenigmaspina is an extinct genus of enigmatic pseudosuchian (=crurotarsan) archosaur from the Late Triassic of the United Kingdom. Its fossils are known from the Pant-y-ffynnon Quarry in South Wales, of which its type and only known species is named after, A. pantyffynnonensis. Aenigmaspina is characterised by the unusual spines on its vertebrae, which are broad and flat on top with a unique 'Y' shape. Although parts of its skeleton is relatively well known, the affinities of Aenigmaspina to other pseudosuchians are unclear, although it is possibly related to families Ornithosuchidae, Erpetosuchidae or Gracilisuchidae.

Mambachiton is an extinct genus of basal avemetatarsalian from the Middle/Upper Triassic Makay Formation of Madagascar. The genus contains a single species, M. fiandohana, known from a partial skeleton with articulated osteoderms.
