Larry Ryan Squire (born May 4, 1941) is an American psychiatrist and neuroscientist. He is a professor of psychiatry, neurosciences, and psychology at the University of California, San Diego, and a Senior Research Career Scientist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Diego. He is a leading investigator of the neurological bases of memory, which he studies using animal models and human patients with memory impairment.
Squire received a B.A. from Oberlin College, where he studied with Celeste McCollough, and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied under the mentorship of Peter Schiller and Hans-Lukas Teuber. [1] He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. [2]
Next Squire accepted a position as a faculty member at the University of California San Diego, where he has remained since. His publications include more than 480 research articles and two books: Memory and Brain (Oxford Press, 1987) and Memory: From Mind to Molecules with Eric Kandel (Roberts & Co., 2nd Ed, 2009). He is also senior editor of the textbook, Fundamental Neuroscience, now in its 4th Edition and editor-in-chief of The History of Neuroscience in Autobiography (now in eight volumes). [1]
Larry Squire illuminated the anatomy and phenotype of human memory impairment, identified the anatomical components of the medial temporal lobe memory system (with Stuart Zola), pioneered the biological distinction between declarative and nondeclarative memory, explored the conscious and unconscious memory systems of the mammalian brain, and helped establish the standard account of memory consolidation. In 1993–1994, Squire served as president of the Society for Neuroscience. [3] He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences as of 1993, [4] and served on the governing Council from 2009 to 2012. He has also been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, [1] American Philosophical Society as of 1996, [5] and National Academy of Medicine (formerly The Institute of Medicine) as of 2000. He received the Charles A. Dana Award for Pioneering Achievements in Health in 1993, [7] the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association in 1993, [8] the William James Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science in 1994, [9] the William Middleton Award from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in 1994, [10] the Metlife Foundation Award for Medical Research in Alzheimer's Disease in 1999, [11] the Karl Spencer Lashley Award from the American Philosophical Society in 1995, "for his seminal contribution to the delineation of implicit and explicit memory systems in the brain", [12] the McGovern Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2004, [13] the Herbert Crosby Warren Medal from the Society of Experimental Psychologists in 2007, [14] the Award for Scientific Reviewing from the National Academy of Sciences in 2012, [15] and the Goldman-Rakic Prize from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation in 2012. Henry Gustav Molaison, known widely as H.M., was an American who had a bilateral medial temporal lobectomy to surgically resect the anterior two thirds of his hippocampi, parahippocampal cortices, entorhinal cortices, piriform cortices, and amygdalae in an attempt to cure his epilepsy. Although the surgery was partially successful in controlling his epilepsy, a severe side effect was that he became unable to form new memories. His unique case also helped define ethical standards in neurological research, emphasizing the need for patient consent and the consideration of long-term impacts of medical interventions. Furthermore, Molaison's life after his surgery highlighted the challenges and adaptations required for living with significant memory impairments, serving as an important case study for healthcare professionals and caregivers dealing with similar conditions.
Brenda Milner is a British-Canadian neuropsychologist who has contributed extensively to the research literature on various topics in the field of clinical neuropsychology. Milner is a professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University and a professor of Psychology at the Montreal Neurological Institute. As of 2020, she holds more than 25 honorary degrees and she continued to work in her nineties. Her current work covers many aspects of neuropsychology including her lifelong interest in the involvement of the temporal lobes in episodic memory. She is sometimes referred to as the founder of neuropsychology and has been essential in its development. She received the Balzan Prize for Cognitive Neuroscience in 2009, and the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience, together with John O'Keefe, and Marcus E. Raichle, in 2014. She turned 100 in July 2018 and at the time was still overseeing the work of researchers.
In neurology, retrograde amnesia (RA) is the inability to access memories or information from before an injury or disease occurred. RA differs from a similar condition called anterograde amnesia (AA), which is the inability to form new memories following injury or disease onset. Although an individual can have both RA and AA at the same time, RA can also occur on its own; this 'pure' form of RA can be further divided into three types: focal, isolated, and pure RA. RA negatively affects an individual's episodic, autobiographical, and declarative memory, but they can still form new memories because RA leaves procedural memory intact. Depending on its severity, RA can result in either temporally graded or more permanent memory loss. However, memory loss usually follows Ribot's law, which states that individuals are more likely to lose recent memories than older memories. Diagnosing RA generally requires using an Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI) and observing brain structure through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a computed tomography scan (CT), or electroencephalography (EEG).

Recognition memory, a subcategory of explicit memory, is the ability to recognize previously encountered events, objects, or people. When the previously experienced event is reexperienced, this environmental content is matched to stored memory representations, eliciting matching signals. As first established by psychology experiments in the 1970s, recognition memory for pictures is quite remarkable: humans can remember thousands of images at high accuracy after seeing each only once and only for a few seconds.

Arthur Paul Shimamura was a professor of psychology and faculty member of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley.
