The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN) and is charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter. Its powers include establishing peacekeeping operations, enacting international sanctions, and authorizing military action. The UNSC is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions on member states.
The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara is the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara, established in 1991 under United Nations Security Council Resolution 690 as part of the Settlement Plan, which had paved way for a cease-fire in the conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front over the contested territory of Western Sahara.
United Nations Security Council resolution 1267 was adopted unanimously on 15 October 1999. After recalling resolutions 1189 (1998), 1193 (1998) and 1214 (1998) on the situation in Afghanistan, the Council designated Osama bin Laden and associates as terrorists and established a sanctions regime to cover individuals and entities associated with Al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden and/or the Taliban wherever located.
The ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee is a committee of the United Nations Security Council tasked with implementing international sanctions against the Islamic State and al-Qaeda. It was established as the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee on 15 October 1999, pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1267, which designated al-Qaeda and the Taliban as terrorist organizations. Following the creation of a separate Taliban Sanctions Committee on 17 June 2011, it was renamed the Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee. The scope of the sanctions regime was expanded to include the Islamic State on 17 December 2015 pursuant to Resolution 2253.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1737 was unanimously passed by the United Nations Security Council on 23 December 2006.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1915, adopted unanimously on March 18, 2010, after recalling resolutions 827 (1993), 1581 (2005), 1597 (2005), 1613 (2005), 1629 (2005), 1660 (2006), 1668 (2006), 1800 (2008), 1837 (2008), 1849 (2008), 1877 (2009) and 1900 (2009), the Council, acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, allowed a temporary increase in judges at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to serve beyond the expiry of their term of office to enable them to complete work on cases in which they were involved.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1715, adopted by acclamation at a closed meeting on October 9, 2006, having considered the question of the recommendation for the appointment of the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Council recommended to the General Assembly that Mr. Ban Ki-moon of South Korea be appointed for a term of office from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2011.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1954, adopted unanimously on December 14, 2010, after recalling resolutions 827 (1993), 1581 (2005), 1597 (2005), 1613 (2005), 1629 (2005), 1660 (2006), 1668 (2006), 1800 (2008), 1837 (2008), 1849 (2008), 1877 (2009), 1900 (2009) and 1931 (2010), the Council permitted two judges to serve beyond their term of office to enable them to complete work on cases in which they were involved at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1988, adopted unanimously on June 17, 2011, after recalling resolutions 1267 (1999), 1333 (2000), 1363 (2001), 1373 (2001), 1390 (2002), 1452 (2002), 1455 (2003), 1526 (2004), 1566 (2004), 1617 (2005), 1624 (2005), 1699 (2006), 1730 (2006), 1735 (2006), 1822 (2008) and 1904 (2009) on terrorism and the threat to Afghanistan, the Council imposed separate sanctions regimes on Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1703, adopted unanimously on August 18, 2006, after reaffirming previous resolutions on East Timor (Timor-Leste), particularly resolutions 1599 (2005), 1677 (2006) and 1690 (2006), the Council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) until August 25, 2006.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1705, adopted unanimously on August 29, 2006, after noting a letter from the President of the Security Council, the Council extended the term of Judge Solomy Balungi Bossa at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1997, adopted unanimously on July 11, 2011, after recalling resolutions 1590 (2005), 1627 (2005), 1663 (2006), 1706 (2006), 1709 (2006), 1714 (2006), 1755 (2007), 1812 (2008), 1870 (2009), 1919 (2010) and 1978 (2011) on the situation in Sudan, the Council authorised the withdrawal of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) by August 31, 2011.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1708, adopted unanimously on September 14, 2006, after recalling previous resolutions on the situation in Côte d'Ivoire, particularly resolutions 1572 (2004), 1584 (2004), 1633 (2005) and 1643 (2005), the Council prolonged the mandate of an expert group monitoring an arms embargo against the country until mid-December 2006.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1709, adopted unanimously on September 22, 2006, after recalling previous resolutions on the situation in Sudan, particularly resolutions 1590 (2005), 1627 (2005), 1653 (2006), 1653 (2006), 1663 (2006), 1679 (2006) and 1706 (2006), the Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) for a period until October 8, 2006.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1712, adopted unanimously on 29 September 2006, after recalling all previous resolutions on the situation in Liberia and West Africa, particularly resolutions 1509 (2003), 1667 (2006) and 1694 (2006), the Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) for six months until 31 March 2007.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1726, adopted unanimously on December 15, 2006, after recalling previous resolutions on the situation in Côte d'Ivoire, the Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and supporting French forces until January 10, 2007.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1730, adopted unanimously on December 19, 2006, after emphasising the role of sanctions, the Council requested the Secretary-General to establish a focal point within the Secretariat to ensure "fair and clear" procedures for placing individuals and entities on sanctions lists and for removing them.
