Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was the King of Nepal from 13 March 1955 until his death in 1972. Following the 1960 coup d'état, he established the partyless Panchayat system which governed the country for 28 years until the introduction of multiparty democracy in 1990. During his reign, Nepal experienced a period of industrial, political and economic change that opened it to the rest of the world for the first time after the 104-year-long reign of the Rana rulers, who had kept the country under an isolationist policy, came to an end in 1951.
Nepali Cinema, also referred to as Kollywood or "Nepali Chalachitra" in Nepali, is the filmmaking industry in Nepal. This includes films in various languages of Nepal, most notably in Nepali, Maithili and Bhojpuri. The term Kollywood is also used, as a portmanteau for films produced in the Nepali language while the Nepalese films produced from Kathmandu and Janakpur in the Maithili language is known as Mithilawood. Rahul Dev Burman was an Indian music director. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Burman composed musical scores for 331 films. Burman did major work with his wife, Asha Bhosle, and Kishore Kumar and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. He also worked extensively and scored approximately 331 songs including some of his most memorable numbers in his career for his sister-in-law, Lata Mangeshkar. He is known for his performance as Arjun in the 1997 patriotic drama film Balidaan. He also wrote and performed in the film Shatru Gatey.

Tika Bhandari is a Nepalese song composer and singer of Nepali music. He has composed music for over 500 Nepali modern songs and has released a total of 23 music albums. He is best known for composing songs like Goli Sishako, Khusi Ta Kahan, Kina Dukcha Timro Man, Yo Maya Bhanne Chij Gaule, Jo Desh Lai, Ma Sabda Charera, Chanchale Timra, Chiso Chiso Sun Koshi, Hamro Prem ko Katha, Harka Jeet, Chhati Bhitra Dhuk Dhuki, Qatar Gaye Suadi Gaye, Aadha Bato, Barsat ma uni rujhda, Sagarmatha Roi Rahechha(Ram Krishna Dhakal), Gangalal ko Jasto mutu, Timro Man Bata, Ma ta hajur van ko driver, Jhilimili Gaun Gharai Ramailo, Ko Sanga Chaina Afno Simana etc. Most of the Nepalese singers have sung his compositions. He received Nepal Bidhya Bhusan in 2003 for being faculty topper in M.A. in Political Science from Tribhuvan University. He is also the former Director of Radio Nepal. On 19 May 2016, he participated an environmental song by 365 Nepali artists lyrics and music by Nipesh Dhaka, in entitled Melancholy which set a Guinness World Records.
Nain Singh Thapa or Nayan Singh Thapa was a Nepalese Kaji (minister) and a military general. He died in the offensive campaign of Kangra from bullet injury. He was the owner of the Thapathali Durbar temple complex.

Balidaan (Sacrifice) is a 1997 Nepali historical drama film, directed by Tulsi Ghimire, and written by Modanath Prasrit. It was produced by Shyam Sapkota under the banner of Cinema Nepal. The film is set in Panchayat-era Nepal, and depicts a fictionalised version of the contemporary democracy movement. It features Hari Bansha Acharya in the lead role, alongside Anjali Lama, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Shanti Maskey, Keshav Bhattarai, Laxmi Giri and Neer Shah. The film was a critical and commercial success.
